"The accusation of "antisemitism" is arguably the original map for "cancel culture." As someone who lived in Israel for a year, I can say that there are MANY legitimate, rational, moral reasons for criticizing Israel, or the Jewish community and Judaism for that matter. It's a lot easier to simply cry "antisemite" and censor (fire, etc.) someone than to actually have a debate and PROVE, with facts, the individual to be an immoral bigot. One of many examples in Jewish -- not only Zionist -- traditional texts worthy of healthy debate is that there are multiple places in the Torah (Old Testament) where God invokes the Israelites to kill every man, woman, and child -- and their animals! -- of the Canaanites (non-Jews in their proximity). What else is that but a recipe for the Holocaust? From the Israelites' God. And there are people in Israel today -- so-called "religious Zionists" -- who use this kind of sacred direction as a base for what's going on in Gaza.
@joeb134Ай бұрын
Im not Jewish but I would like to point out that it says God directed them to do so. I have yet to see a single time when the founders of Izzy claimed God directed them. Most were not really religious anyway
@THEFIREDLIBRARIAN-iz7poАй бұрын
One follow-up as I watch the full video here: as uncomfortable as it may be, there ARE relationships between Zionism and Judaism. Zionism is about racial supremacy? What about the traditional, Orthodox definition of a Jew? Who is a Jew? Someone born of a Jewish mother. That is a quintessential genetic (i.e., "racial") base. What about the traditional Jewish idea that all Jews are from "the seed of Abraham?" Reform Judaism, Conservative Judaism, Reconstructionist Judaism, etc. and their liberalizing of Orthodox Judaism all were born in the mid-1800s, or later. In purely Orthodox times, conversion to Judaism was not encouraged. It was not a universalist faith. The euphemism for this, by many Jewish scholars, is that Judaism is a "particularist" faith. There is much to examine, discuss, and debate here. Israel's moral crimes against the Palestinians may open doors to a healthy moral inquiry forbidden in the past.
@THEFIREDLIBRARIAN-iz7poАй бұрын
@@joeb134 True. Many of the founders of Israel were socialists (that's the basis of the kibbutz movement.) Somewhere in Kenya was even considered as a possibility, early on, to create "Israel." But the founders knew there wasn't a traditional pull (i.e., religious) there. And there is a strand of Zionism referred to as "religious Zionism," and there has been scholarly investigations about this. In recent times, this movement is obviously growing.

Yahweh of Mt Zion was a minor Canaanite tribal war deity (consort of Asherah) in the Canaanite pantheon promoted to the one and only god by Judaean regimes [not in polytheist Israel] such Josiah, the Agents of Cyrus with their Pharisees and the Hasmoneans who created the totalitarian Orthodox Judaism with its rabbis. There is no mystical union with Yahweh in Judaism as Y is not the Divine Light [of universalist religions and philosophies] but the apotheosis of Rage and Wrath instincts. The Hebrew Gnostics who wrote the Gospels [dozens of them as found at Nag Hammadi] mocked Yahweh as The Fool who thought that there was none higher than him. The Son-of-God [a [pre-Christian metaphor for Gnosis (Divine Illumination) was to lead their Zealot brethren away from tribal nationalist war and seek salvation within through enlightenment.

We owe them our attention, we owe them our time, we owe them our work. This is, I think, what it means to be a person who is paying attention, to realise that we have sacrifices to make, because, at least, here in the United States, everything that I have, is the result of extraction and theft, and, you know, I might not be directly involved in that, but we're living very comfortable lives in the US in comparison to people who are living through a genocide, so I keep that in mind, when I think about the things that I have lost." As an anthropologist, she gave a good analysis of the institutional causes of her firing and the conflict with her academic rights to free expression and due process. I am looking forward to her ongoing litigation where the whole story will come out with discovery. I hope she gets a good book out of it.

She is a brave hero! This is obviously the government of a country we mustn't name involved in punishing her.....

Wow, what a great interview. Prof. Maura Finkelstein is a shining light on what it means to be a professor in higher education: her simplicity, moral courage and humility to face head-on the cowardice of academic administrators and the corruption & malfeasance of the ruling political and economic elite is rare. Thanks to Nora-Barrows Friedman for such a good interview.

This isn’t the first time and doubt it will be the last in the UK renowned University professor David Miler an expert in his field was unceremoniously sacked for stating facts and accused of anti semitism. He later took the case to courts and won. Please watch and learn from the victory❤❤ may all those who stand up for humanity and against genocide of the indigenous Palestinians be blessed by the Almighty❤

Teaching about Palestine is extremely important but ALSO teaching about zionism is equally important. Tony Greenstein's book, "Zionism During the Holocaust", is an eye-opener as well as Ilan Pappe's latest book, "Lobbying For Zionism On Both Sides Of The Atlantic". The USA doesn't teach it's own history!!!!!! This is why the world, the WESTERN WORLD, is a disaster. BRICS rules now because the USA 🇺🇸 empire is crashing and burning and western Asia is collapsing with it. Isolated from the whole world because democracy and human rights do not exist anywhere. The good news is the end of the USA empire. Russia won, Ukraine lost. Israel lost and will be gone in less than one year. There's nothing that the USA and western Europe can do to stop the ending of empire. We celebrate this because humanity wins!

Thanks to both of you for highlighting the disastrous issues with human thinking being led by our emotions and habits rather than logic. We're a terrible species, but listening to you there is hope!

I am a 73 year old man and I have spent the better part of my life trying to understand why I seem to always feel a certain sadness in my heart. Then I thought, maybe this had something to do with it. Hopefully this story brings out others like me. In 1963 Zionists came to my home in Casablanca Morocco, to convince my parents to send me and my little sister to Israel without them. I was 12 and my sister 9 when we started our miserable journey to the "Promised land". It destroyed our family and left me and my sister with long lasting scars neither one of us has been able to heal. Being from Morocco made it even more difficult to live in a more racist country than Morocco ever was. We had a very peaceful life as Jews living amongst Muslims in Morocco. We understood each other and helped each other. To this day, the principal advisor to King Mohamed is a Jew. But the Zionists needed boddies to fill Israel and slowly claim more and more land from the Palestinians they kept displacing. The people running Israel are not Jews. True Jews would have helped the Palestinians evolve and share in their fortunes, like we did for centuries in the Arab world. Israel claims it is defending itself? Against whom? The people they have been displacing and opressing for 80 years? Israel, my advice to you, if you want to survive, get rid of the religious zealots who run your government and join the 21st century.

What a revelation. So sorry for your personal suffering due to the unfortunate decision taken by your parents to remove you from your happy home in Morocco where Jews and Arabs lived cooperatively and in peace to the Zionist hell of the genocidal colonial entity.

Thanks Nora and Maura for this amazing interview. Maura, I don't believe your role is "small", certainly no smaller than most of the rest of us. Each action is made up of individuals like ourselves. Thank you for your courage and humanity. All the best for the future and getting your job back. Hassan from Cape Town, South Africa, also an academic
