An Avianca Ecuador Airbus A320NEO registration N775AV, performing flight GLG7392 from Guayaquil Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport (SEGU) to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (KJFK) after landing on runway 31 left at New York Kennedy Airport was instructed to vacate the runway but the airplane stopped on the runway without any report. The controller noticed that and instructed the aircraft of short final to go around. After that the controller informed GLG7392 that next time they have to report their intentions to the Tower because there was an aircraft on 1-mile final.

To everyone saying stuff like, "It's 20m, they should have been able to get off the runway!" You can tell that just by looking at a video that explicitly says the positions might not be accurate? The correct thing to do if there's a suspected issue with the plane is to stop and figure it out. Yes, communicate it with the tower when you can, but that's second priority. For all we know, "problem with the plane" could be either steering or engines, so it's actually a rather large assumption on your part that they could have even made it off. The controller did their job by calling for the go around. The pilots job is their own plane; the controller worries about all of them.

There wasn't any problem with the plane, they were just lost. And to worry about their own plane is also to worry about a plane coming in to land behind you.

I think the only reason to stop on the runway without letting ATC know ahead of time would be an aircraft evacuation.

@@jayc4283 seriously? This is JFK, there’s a whole line of planes arriving on that runway. The plane had not declared an emergency. They parked themselves on the runway with traffic right behind and didn’t say a peep on the radio about it. That’s an extremely dangerous situation, hence the controller’s anger. If they had an emergency they needed to let the tower know.

Having planes too close behind is a receipe for desaster. It puts unnecessary stress on the crew.
@marspp

They DO NOT need to let anyone know. When they are number one on final it’s their runway until they fully vacate it. This is the problem with clearing following planes to land. It then requires an intervention to call a go around if the runway doesn’t become clear. I suspect the pilots were lying when they said they had a problem - they were more likely working out where they needed to go. If so, they were silly for doing that and not saying anything but regardless it’s their runway til they vacate.

Really 😮 don't they at least need to communicate the need to stop? There are 2 pilots, a quick radio call is nothing surely. It's a busy airport.... 🤷🏾‍♀️

@@GH-oi2jf and this is the problem... landing clearances for following aircraft are given before the runway is clear. It then takes an intervention if the situation changes. If that intervention doesn’t work there is a risk then that if the following aircraft can’t see the plane on the runway so don’t know it’s there (ie JAL at Haneda recently) there is a real risk of collision. Haneda is different though because another aircraft taxied onto the runway when they shouldn’t have but the point being, it can be hard to see if the runway is clear at night.

@@trinity72gp there is no requirement to make a radio call. It would have been beneficial for traffic flow of course and, for safety in advising the runway isn’t clear (hence noting about following traffic. But it’s up to ATC to ensure the runway is clear). But: aviate, navigate, communicate. Communicate is last.

Surely thats the towers problem? the pilots sole priority is safety of his passengers so if theres a problem he deals with it as priority over communication to tower. Literally the Towers job to monitor and have clear runways and ensure safe distances.
@dangould7679
@dangould7679 6 ай бұрын
Is that really right? Not a pilot but .. Aviate, navigate, communicate is the rule AFAIK. He's no longer aviating and needs guidance from ground to navigate to terminal. He's in the one spot that you can't just hang out at for very long especially at an airport like Kennedy. I think you absolutely have to communicate a delay in vacating the runway, unless its the tower's job to make sure every plane vacates on their own before giving final clearance.
@SteepTurn
@SteepTurn 6 ай бұрын
@@dangould7679 "Aviate" ends when the aircraft is at the parking location and is shut off, this includes taxiing on the ground. Well, it where wise to inform the tower as soon as possible. If the reason was - as they said - a technical problem, I can imagine that it takes at least a little moment for recognition, and this moment was longer as expected by the tower for the 2nd aircraft. But we don't know anything about the reason why they stopped on the runway. I'm questioning why the separation was so tight, also we don't know the entire traffic situation. And I'm always asking, why in the US a Cleared to Land is given while the runway is not definitively clear. Not allowed here in Europe and as far as I know elsewhere in the world.

Tower did a good job keeping on top of things here. To people saying “aviate, navigate, THEN communicate” please keep in mind the air crew of Galapagos knew there was a plane coming in right behind them. If they’re going to stop they’ve got to announce that straight away so JetBlue knows to go around.

are you kidding???? he allowed them to be packed too tight as well as the same for the parallel. The garbled coms are not clear, but they seem to have had an issue of some sort on roll out, and as you said, communicate is after dealing with the safety of aircraft.

A Pilot can abort a start at any time. Its not his duty to make everything safe for others. Its the controllers job. If you have a traffic in a mile final you have to make sure its safe. Its required its his duty to manage that. If you cannot do that dont pack it to close. There are guidlines for that stuff for a reason
