I think the Cradle of Humanity aspect is why the African aspects of the pieces seem to form their core. The thing with Natlan is that it is comprised of several different tribes, each being based in a different part of the world (most of them being from the Ring of Fire), and so I'm expecting different pieces of music to lean more heavily on specific cultures. We'll be able to hear the first patch's worth of music within a week (three tribes) with more tribes and their areas/music being introduced in later patches.

@@effortlessfury That’s actually genius, having the different tribes of Natlan bring different “cradle” cultures from different parts of the world, with Africa at the center. I find actually very heart-warming to see people feeling genuinely represented by Natlan's OST. I think that representation can come in many ways... Genshin has this unique fantasy world that mixes various cultures and seeing part of this on its soundtrack is way more than skin color. I mean, I would love to see more dark skinned characters as well, but this is straight up a good job from the devs. Hard to think back in the day that a chinese game would pay homage to african culture in such a respectful way.
@katm54583 ай бұрын
it's easier for a lot of people to connect with characters visually so they're rightfully upset with the designs but it's just not fair or true to say genshin's doing a bad job with cultural representation. it's a bigger problem with anime as a genre that i think we should recognize when something is done well, and encourage that as the standard, but there is absolutely no nuance in online discourse when people are just trying to shut down a discussion by winning the moral high ground in 280 characters
@HousekiMitai3 ай бұрын
@@katm5458 I... kinda don't think its easier necessarily? Idk. There's this anime called Girls Band Cry. The protagonist is a young japanese girl and I felt imediately connected to her, not because of her appearence. In fact, I'm a brazillian black man (lol). I legit started crying so much a certain moment on episode 2 because her situation was so relatable to mine, her fear, anxiety, personality, all of that. It didn't matter for me the fact that she was so different from me visually. I just felt that "yeah... this girl went through some suffocating situations". For me, the great part of fiction, is that you can connect, robots, animals, aliens, and various types of characters because they are going through things that you can understand and connect. Not saying that it wouldn't be absolutely AWESOME to have more variety on skin color in the game, but I think for me is more about "that would be sooo cool" more than "now I feel represented", you know?
@katm54583 ай бұрын
@@HousekiMitai i agree that it's easier to connect with a character emotionally through their story from a single person's point of view. i meant to say that the way genshin presents its content makes it more likely for a good portion of players to connect with characters' visual designs over other factors, mainly because it's more accessible - a 1.5 minute demo featuring some voicelines that capture their personality, and a self contained story quest, which.. as well as the lore of teyvat is written, i feel like there's a disconnect with what is actually incorporated and delivered in character quests and event quests. maybe that's intentional. it's probably easier for a pg13 gacha game to budget and sell characters this way. anyways, not to say that it's right or wrong but i think that's why some players are reacting the way that they are. most people don't want to read the lore, and most people don't have the musical knowledge to appreciate the research and collaboration with international musicians that goes into crafting the soundtrack (me, that's why i'm here). most people play the archon quest, skip through the main world quests, login for abyss refresh even, and wait to pull on characters that look cool to them.
@CelticBotansDigitalArt3 ай бұрын
@@katm5458 Sorry for the long reply, but I reallt felt like leaving a comment here too about what you said! It's the first time I see someone actually mention how this entire thing regarding representation is, in fact, a lot more complicated than either side want it to be. For context, I'm from Brazil, and white in our BR context. On one side, I think Hoyoverse lacks diversity in the cast, and it can and should visually represent the people from the cultures they are borrowing from and how they actually look like; they don't do that and we all know the reasons why ("characters of color wont sell", biases from both the company and the players, etc). On the other hand however, I ALSO think the representation they do in the music and lore references is actually pretty awesome, and more than often unlike in any other big game we see going on. Like, I know it may be strange but they can be both right and wrong at the same time. I wish we could talk about these with more nuance more often, without the entire dismissing of the game, cause I learned a lot through Genshin and I think that's so valid, even when they make mistakes! Or like, without ppl saying that "skin color doesnt matter and doesnt represent culture"; saying something like that is naive at best and disingenuous/convenient at worst. So yeah TL;DR is that It's not that simple on either side imo..
@HousekiMitai3 ай бұрын
@@CelticBotansDigitalArt I do think people tend to oversimplify those topics. It always ends with people calling each other r*cist, trying to demonize them. They simply wont take into consideration what the other said (well, thats the internet lol). But in my opinion: Diversity and representation can come in many ways, not necessarily the color of a character. When it comes to Genshin, while I'd love to see more characters with different skin colors and I'm consistently sad that Dehya isn't a good character to play with, we can't say that they are not representing other cultures in various other ways. Heck, I fell in love with South Asian culture and music thanks to Sumeru. That whole "drama" with Natlan not having more character of color was a bit too exaggerated, in my opinion. Again, it would be very cool, but people were missing the point, directing their hate towards things that didn't make any sense when it should simply be "I'm pissed because I was expecting to be different" and it would be totally fine. But some arguments I read were absurd and outright nonsensical. TL;DR: More characters of color would be awesome? Hell yeah! Does it mean that they are disrespecting other cultures by not having those characters? Nah.

There are 6 tribes in Natlan and possibly the missing 7th tribe could be included somehow later in the story. We've seen 3 tribes introduced so far, the water tribe (Hawaii/Maori), Mountain tribe (Inca?), and jungle tribe (Brasil?). the other 4 could be the aborigin, malay, colombia/Caribbean, and Mexica the ancient civilization of Natlan might be the one inspired by Africa, each region had one after all... like Remulia (Roman) for Fontaine, Enkanomiya (Mycanean) for Inazuma, and Deshret (Egypt/Mesopotamia) for Sumeru.
@andytlwang3 ай бұрын

The water tribe seems to be inspired by hawaii but also resort tiki culture, the canopy one seems more based on the maya if kinich’s name is to be attributed to anything. Though then again if I’m not mistaken on the leaks, the tribe leader seems to be called wayna which is a quechua name with nothing to do with the maya nor with any of the present verdure backgrounds or clothing aesthetic as the canopy. As for the earth tribe it seems based on the pueblo/southwest US culture with the canyon and scenic architecture in the mountains? Again though the clothing choices seem like what you could buy from a tourist-savvy destination place with the over expensive faux pas shirts and clothes. The choice to make culture out of something as urban as breakdancing is also a little bit odd but alright… After all how do we logically assume the music for breakdancing appears? Is it different? And if it is why is the music in-game in the tribe itself straight up just hip hop? Are there now drum machines in natlan? Why only natlan then, and how would drum machines or music players be powered? It leaves a lot of questions like that because nothing thus far in teyvat has been that modern for sure. I think it’s sort of a weak point with natlan. It seems like hoyo just fused a number of very random aesthetic choices for each individual tribe based on feel and called it a day. It’s like if I dumped korean culture in liyue because it “feels asiatic”, with as much sense as that makes lmao. With the sort of questions, before those were easy to circumvent but this time it being so loud and present makes the immersion a loot easier to question for sure.

Finally someone who recognizes the andean instruments! I'm not south american but still latin american and I really enjoy music with all these traditional instruments so I was very happy when I saw them being used here!, They sound so so beautiful. I was thinking it would have been GREAT to have a song with south american/north american native language or at least some words if full composed lyrics were not possible, because I understand it's hard compared to swahili which is still used nowadays. So I wondered why they didn't include more south american elements and i came to this conclusion: For the main themes at least I understand they can't include so many languages and instuments, so maybe they chose the most unique "elements" from each culture for the songs. Many people say that the first song "Natlan" reminds them of the lion king muscal because of the vocals, like the African singing style is very unique and powerful, while south american traditional instuments have beautiful warm sounds that make you feel closer to nature, like the wind instruments remind us of birds. These instuments also convey deep emotions and I think they do it in a very unique way, like all organic instuments do so but south american instruments are specially good at that in my opinion. So yeah, maybe that's why. I think in one of the new character trailers I heard aztec-like music, mainly percussion. I can't wait to know more about this new GI update so I can see and hear more and I hope they included more south american elements too!

It's interesting that they decided to lean on African inspiration for this promotional video, but there's a lot of melodies heavily inspired by Latin America too in the OST, fear not.

I have some music reaction recommendations: Blue bird (opening 3 of naruto shippuden) (both the 1:30 version and the full almost 4 minutes version,this is gonna apply to all the other anime openings that'll be listed here as well,with a slight difference in length for the full versions of them,now let's continue with the actual list after all that elaboration) Unravel (op of season 1 of Tokyo ghoul) Again (op 1 of full metal alchemist brotherhood) Liar mask (2nd op of akame ga kill) The redhood (a song from a gacha game called nikke:goddess of victory) Of course feel free to link me the reaction videos to any of these if actually have heard any of them before

Hi Omar, I'm sorry for the late reply maybe you already found the anime openings reactions, but in case you didn't: Here is Unravel and other anime openings (I also have other videos with anime openings reactions) kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3u4pKaeYs-pj6M Regarding Blue Bird, I watched all of Naruto Shippuden when it was aired so it wouldn't be a first time reaction.

I'm not sure if I misunderstood you but the Steel pan isn't an African instrument. It was founded in South America

Some of the other Natlan music has a more South American vibe than these ones. The Natlan OST has potential to become my favorite in the game.

Como peruano, escuchar instrumentos como la quena y zampoña, fue una grata sorpresa. Por cierto, el idioma en el que cantan es swahili. Saludos.
