I saw "Christmas Story" 4 times in junior high in 1987. That both proves and disproves Brian's point. There was definitely repetition, but it was popular long before TBS started playing it on a loop.
@zantara
@zantara 3 жыл бұрын
@sirVic42 I agree with you - I saw it around 1987, too, and it was not getting played constantly yet. Once a year, just like most Christmas movies. And it was popular with my dad and people at school. I have not watched it since Turner began their 24-hour marathons (which is silly to do), and it is true that it did not do as well as one might think when it was first released. That seemed to happen a lot in the early 80's, for some reason (like Somewhere In Time, for example). Heck, It's a Wonderful Life was not a box office hit, either. A Christmas Story would be considered a classic today with or without the yearly marathons. The marathons only serve to make some people hate it.

As a person from Scotland I can safely say Brian is talking pish about A Christmas Story. I’ve always known this film and it isn’t shown here often. I can’t comment about the showing schedule in the USA but the film is one of the best Christmas movies for various reasons. It’s almost a satire and was way ahead of its time. The main actor actually became a producer and was also in Elf.

"A Christmas Story" grossed $20 million total when it was released in 1983. It wasn't talked about as much because holiday films weren't as popular back then. However, the following grew as it aired on cable in the 80's and 90's. The marathon started because the popularity grew and the ratings were going up. Repetition probably made the film more mainstream but it had a following before then.

A Christmas Story was dumped on the market by MGM, the week before Thanksgiving, in an era where bad Christmas movies had soured the market. It still did good box office, initially and had great reviews from people like Roger Ebert. It wasn't in most theaters for the Christmas holidays. However, it immediately found and audience on video and cable, before Turner purchased the MGM library and had it played in marathon showings. The marathons were a result of popularity, not the other way around. That revisionism is worthy of the WWE, Brian.

Brian Last is absolutely correct about A Christmas Story. It's thin on story, especially for how long and boring it is. It's meandering. It's outdated hoakum (this movie was made in the 80s, not the 50s). It lacks narrative structure. People who like A Christmas Story are simpletons who get the warm fuzzies looking at Norman Rockwell paintings or those goddamn Anne Geddes photographs. People I want to avoid at all costs. (Spoiler alert for "Spider-Man Far From Home" and "Iron Man" if you click on "Read More". Peter still acts and has been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as William Ginter Riva who was the scientist "forced" to build Obadiah (Iron Monger)'s armor - the one Obadiah yells at him for not being able to build what Tony Stark built in a cave, then responds with "I'm not Tony Stark." Peter reprised his role as William in "Spider-Man Far From Home" revealing himself to have been working with Mysterio when his work was disregarded by Tony Stark. Christmas Story isn't a cinematic masterpiece but it's still great and always a pleasure to watch. Like Dumb and Dumber.

I'm surprised neither of them mentioned the movie's writer and narrator, Jean Shepherd, who was a well known radio broadcaster and story teller for decades before the Christmas Story came out and is often revered as one of the greatest in the history of that profession.

Peter Billingsley and he also did The Dirt Bike Kid and Beverly Hills Brats and no I didn’t need to use IMDB. Brian (sort of) redeemed himself with the Caddyshack reference.

Dude, I've been on the ACS train LONG before the 24 Hour marathon on TBS. It used to appear throughout November and December on local stations (yep, WPIX!!!!) and on HBO, and I became obsessed with it at a young age.

I saw A Christmas Story in 1987. A co-worker rented it, loved it and recommended it. It gained a following via tape rentals before Ted Turner got hold of it. And before he appeared in A Christmas Story, Peter Billingsley was the recurring character in Nestle's Quick commercials known as "Messy Marvin".

'It's A Wonderful Life' was the exact same: not popular/successful when released, but became popular/beloved over the years due to TV. 'The Shawshank Redemption' was the same, too.

To be honest, I never heard of A Christmas Story until I realized it was on for 24 hours on TBS and or TNT back in the late 90s. Originally, I thought it was older than a 1983 movie. I enjoy the movie. I try and watch it once every year.

A Christmas Story is a classic but if I have to watch a movie at christmas time over and over again, I'll take Home Alone and Home Alone 2. Maybe it's the Wile E Coyote and Road Runner humor of Kevin's traps on the bandits, but I always find it more enjoyable. Plus the hotel guy wanting Kevin to get arrested for credit card fraud is pretty hilarious in the 2nd movie

FWIW Peter Billingsley (Ralphie) is largely retired from acting but went on to become a successful producer and director. Also, the film Brian was talking about was called Russkies.
