I was a major Bobo and Art Thomas fan. Ron was the first to be recognized on a worldwide basis and market.

Sailor Art Thomas was world champion for Dick the Bruisers WWA in the early 70's. A minor world title, yes, but still a world title.

Wright won the WWA World Heavyweight Championship from "Classy" Freddie Blassie in Los Angeles 5 days before MLK delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.

Butch Reed deserved to be a World Champion. His work in Mid-South was second to nobody. Reed was money in the Houston area. Over as both a face and a heel.

Absolutely. I was a big fan of Butch Reed. Excellent heel. Great talker. Deserved a good world title run. I was very sad to hear of his passing.

***** I disagree I seen his matches on the MSG channels when I was little the crowd either cheered him or Gave him super heat he was a draw and his matches did change with whoever he faced watch his main event match with hogan the crowd believed he could he Hulk , but Vince dropped the ball with him, Rude, DiBiase, and Ricky Steamboat all should have had a short transition change

Bono Brazil was the NWA world heavyweight champion in the late 60s

Unfortunately, though I hear he earned and deserved the title, the NWA never recognized it. I've never heard why. 😕

I think Iceman King Parsons was WCCW world champion before Ron Simmons was a WCW world's champion.

WCCW had international tv though. their tv show was seen in over half the US via Pat Robertson's CBN. They also had tv in the middle east and in Japan. the Von Erichs were insanely popular in Israel of all places. they did a few tours in Israel because of it.
@SethH1982

also a completely different era too though. most promotions didn't tour the world back then.

then world class still counts, since their show was going out on satellite all over the place. one of their biggest tv markets was Israel

Guys, it's not really "World Champions" Cornette is pertaining to, but more Primary Champions (which mostly are referred to as "World Champions".

Let's not overlook the elephant in the room which is racism it's naturally the only reason why there has been so few African-American Wrestling Champions.

@@jackmcgregor4025 Obviously you didn't read my comments... Heels and face are written into a script. such as when Shawn put Marty through window which then spurned his heel turn

@@Dakatari yes but the fans always had the true power. The crowd could've popped in excitement instead booing and Vince would have to change stuff in storyline since Fans are cheering for Shawn instead booing him.

By Cornette's reasoning, Magnum TA should've never been groomed to be world champion then. His matches were always short to hide his weaknesses unless he was in the ring with a known veteran, and I loved Magnum, but let's be honest here, your champion fit's your demographic. That's how it's been and always will be, it's the truth.

Platinum Swords How many black top draws were there? Magnum was being groomed so what?
@PLATINUMSWORDS
@PLATINUMSWORDS 7 жыл бұрын
How many black top draws? Well.... Thunderbolt Patterson, Ray King, King Parsons, Bad News Brown, Bearcat Wright, Luther Lindsey, Art Thomas, Tony Atlas, Bobo Brazil, Junk Yard Dog, Ernie Ladd, Rocky Johnson, Butch Reed I mean I could go on, but that's not the point. The point is, is if the vast majority of your audience is white, then your champions are going to be white too. Same as if your audience was latin, black, asian whatever. There's no skating that fact.
