Olga Korbut is one of my favourite gymnasts. She definetely was the darling of the 72 olympics. Her floor routine and uneven bars are right up there with best ever routines.

It was as if Olga hadn't a care in the world performing her exercise despite most of that world focusing on her at that very moment, and she nailed it. Incredible professionalism and guts. Speaking of professionalism, Jim McKay...a man who, through his craft, created an intimate atmosphere of a one-on-one relationship with his viewers, especially during the Munich hostage crisis. He was like a very good friend visiting from afar. He did so with integrity, eloquence and incredible class...

Olga might not have been the most technically perfect, or the strongest gymnast, but she took risks nobody else was taking and unquestionably paved the way for the massive changes in this sport. And damn, was she entertaining to watch! She got millions of little American girls (including myself) interested in gymnastics. Without Olga, there may have never been a Simone.

Laura Anderson, thanks for your comment....for in this lil ole chiweenie Sportsphile's opinion....you are "spot-on" with your assessment of truly one of sports history's greatest athletes....and after posting 1400 vintage sports, comedy and music video (370 hrs) on my webpage at www.imasportsphile.com ....I have come to understand that the truly great ones....all of them....be it musician, comedian or athlete....they all individually brought something to the table....that not only captured the sports fan's attention....but rather, they etched their special "touch"....that no one else could do into our memories....so, to me....Olga was to gymnastics what Dale Earnhardt was to NASCAR....brilliant and daring. Your comment inspires me to keep up the daunting task of posting the remaining 1900 hrs. in our video library....so stay tuned.

Classy Jim McKay. How I miss him. As for Ms. Korbut, she remains one of the most charismatic individuals of any sport ever.

Lazakovits' fate was cruel. She retired just after Munchen and did not find her way any more. She died 20 years later due alco related illness.
@lokismig3 жыл бұрын
@@marguskiis7711 Yes, he had a pretty miserable life. He withdrew from gymnastics prematurely due to his alcohol problems. In the last years of her life, apparently her alcoholic problems led her to do anything to get a bottle. She could not get out of her addiction and one morning she was found dead on the street next to a train station.

These girls where 17, looking 12. They where often starved so badly, and given hormon blockers even, to remain petite...they where trained with lots of cruelty.
