To all the haters and luddites who complain about the inconvenience of a road trip, let me simplify. If you go on frequent road trips or frequently tow a large trailer, don't get one! For everyone else, it is superior to ICE in every single way! Its actually more convenient than stopping at a gas station. 10 seconds to plug it in at home, and you have 300 miles by morning. A road trip is a bit less convenient, but still not a big deal.

Thank you, sir, for the video. I'm glad to see that you're just like the rest of us -- sometimes things work great and other times, they fail miserably. My Lightning has almost 900 miles on it, and I have not yet made a road trip that would require finding and using a commercial charging station. So, every little bit of advice and road knowledge -- both the good and bad -- is helpful. That said, I don't think I would ever get comfortable driving on the Interstate with the outside mirrors tucked in. 🙂 Thanks, again. Lou from Georgia.

Good stuff James! I'm also an EV owner and agree that SoC is more important than the GOM. Key is to know your usable battery and efficiency, then you know if you can drive fast or slow things down, etc. You did a great job explaining! PS I test drove a Lightning yesterday, absolutely love it! It would be my first ever truck, just need to convince my wife 😂

I just got my Lightning yesterday and am loving it. I can explain why your frustrated with selecting the 100+KW chargers in this point ( 13.33 ) in your video. Once you select the charging speed you want, you don’t press the back button until you look at the filtered list and choose the station you want to navigate to. I think you misunderstood how that feature works as being a permanent filter for all charging stations after that. It just gives you a list to scroll through a choose from. It also shows them on your map to the right so you can see where they are in relation to your current route. Hope that helps.

What are your driving habits like? do you accelerate fast from standstill all the time? Also, what is the current average temperature and terrain where you are now? I have the ER that claims 320 mi, and I'm consistently averaging 2.2 to 2.4 kWh/mi. Granted I'm is South Florida where terrain and temperatures are not an issue. Now, when I first got the truck, I was averaging 1.6 to 1.8, but I was really enjoying the acceleration this truck has, I showed it off as often as I could, but not so much anymore. I have also found out that one pedal drive is not the most efficient on the highway, coasting whenever traffic starts to slow down ahead greatly improved my range on the highway.

One of the hidden social differences is that when you stop at a travel center to fill up a gas vehicle, you are expected to move your car to go inside to go to the bathroom and get your drinks and snacks, where in the EV it is socially acceptable to park and go in and spend time in the store while your car is unattended.

From 80-90% the chargers rates drop so much after 80% is reached, it might be faster to select a slower charger which is closer to charge back up to 80% again. Continue with slow chargers to 80% until you have enough of a charge to make it to your next fast charger.
@erichtisnado1536
@erichtisnado1536 Жыл бұрын
It's not the chargers, it's the battery. LiIon batteries (in whatever flavor) all do this. 0-80% is fast, and slows down for charging rate quite a bit as the battery warms up.

You fail to mention the single most important factor when estimating range--WIND! Even a 5mph headwind is very significant. A 10 mph headwind vs tailwind is staggering. At highway speeds, you'll get less than 1.5 m/kwh, whereas a tailwind will give you 3.5 or more! In other words, if you're cutting it very close, if you have even a small tailwind, you have nothing to worry about. A headwind, you will not make it. Always look at the wind forecast for a road trip! I haven't tested it, but I'm guessing a 20mph headwind would give less than 1 m/kwh.

Elon Musk was asked why prototype Tesla's have no side view mirrors. He said SV mirrors act as speed brakes. Companies need to make small fold/unfold mirrors that come out of the body. Small mirrors with big views that connect with screen. But they have to work 100% of the time.
@erichtisnado1536

It should run or the propane or gasoline. Id also take my home charger with me. Hey its a truck, not like you dont have the room. I also think it should be a factory option. User interface is the achilles heel of the 21st Century. That, coming from a controls engineer, should alert people to be cautious. Exacerbated by script kiddies constantly changing the way something works, because, well they can! Upgrades that leave you confused as to where something was. Or Apple eliminating your shortcuts such as the flashlight!!! So for automobiles, perhaps it's important to retain buttons for the routine functions such as lights! The only advantage of the huge screen is the readability of the map.
