I like that companies are fighting back against these scams with new authentication practices, but I wonder if this is the wrong way to go about it? We've been trained not to share these codes we receive from SMS to phone agents, are these "authentication" messages going to be clear that they're different and ok to provide, or will it just muddy the waters and cause more people to fall for password reset scams in the future? I've never seen one so I don't know how distinguishable it is from a standard 2fa code.
@jjjacer5 ай бұрын
well as a Spectrum customer, that does give me a bit more hope, but then again it might depend on the agent you get as well, as with a lot of customer service it can be a mixed bag. but then again i think lately many places are training their phone reps to be on the lookout for scams, i know that our helpdesk at the hospital system i work at is very aware of scam callers and if anything feels just a little off we go into full lockdown mode, creating a ticket, saying we will call them back, then calling back on our numbers we have listed, if no response we call the supervisors, then as a precaution if we are still unsure we lock the account and change the password. now if only people would stop clicking phishing email links on their personal accounts, and stop going to random websites from ad's that give the stupid fake microsoft security popups.

They really don't have a way to override approved procedures without going higher up the chain of management. They're locked out of the software that could do the override approvals, if any business is still using it. I suspect that all the procedures are programmed in the software they use and each step must be followed to get to authentic approval. But I'll grant that his patience with the potential scammer is commendable. He doesn't know if he's speaking to some poor slob or to a wicked scammer.
@mashhoudsheikh3 ай бұрын
@@kimfleury I've worked for both Spectrum and Xfinity. I currently work for Xfinity. TRUST ME. We can absolutely override 90% of things. Also, nowadays we get alot of these types of calls, but per policy if it seems scammy, we are told to authenticate to the TEE. Been doing it for over two years now. Most agents don't care and will gladly take a payment since it seems very un-scam like to be making a payment. But policy changes now make us authenticate properly.

Never assume someone is a scammer but stick to policy. "I understand you don't have access to that phone so once you do, give us a call back or you can go into the store with an ID and have your phone number changed." Either they'll get mad and hang up or ask for a supervisor or they'll call back and get someoen else. Just don't let it be you that falls for it. I also worked in retail for AT&T and we'd have people come in the store and try to run scams in person. It was much more rare but twice we had to call the police and have someone arrested for identiy theft and stuff like that.

It certainly would help if the "real" customer support for these companies wasn't constantly offshore call centers that sound similar to the scam centers and similarly use fake names and broken English. It'd be a lot more convenient if the real service had real English speaking representatives and not indians trying to pretend their name is John and saying Kindly all the time. It'd be make it easy to go "oh that's an offshore scam center" immediately
@SpoonsYT4 ай бұрын
@@tanookimariorocks were it so easy, my friend. English speaking support reps exist, but they are far up the chain and only get involved when stuff is really messed up. For the average Joe calling to complain, that first line of support acts as a screen to weed out the non-issues from real issues. You’d be surprised with the kinds of issues people come into the store for us to help with, let alone what people may be calling for. Facebook password resets, Google sign-in issues, WhatsApp texting issues, just to name a few. It’s not a pretty solution, nor is it one that us retail workers really appreciate, but it’s seen as the most cost effective solution. My only real advice is if you genuinely need help, go to a retail location. At least that way, if it’s a problem Xfinity genuinely cannot handle, you won’t be waiting 2-3 hours between several reps just to get told a firm “no”.

If they do, I hope you can help bring them to light and make the world a little bit better. Many people in the region, young ones, fraught with scarce employment opportunities and detached from the victims, might resort to such activities. But it doesn't make it right the least bit. Another outstanding project, Jim. As of now, HHH is still up, but I'm looking for ways to leave a review about their antics. Thank you for all you do for us, Jim. And for being so kind to some of the smaller channels like S Sandwich. You have never been petty or possessive of what you do. One of the many reasons you are the Godfather in this community. Cheers! 💝

Spectrum requiring verification is nice but also annoying. Someone used my grandmother's name and email address to setup service in another state. She's 80 and doesn't live in an area serviced by spectrum. When I called to report it they kept asking for verification information but could not understand the situation that whatever verification information they have, isn't her information, I guess the only solution is for her to drive an hour to a spectrum store and close the account in person maybe. Because they used her email address I was able to gain access to the account and kept changing their Wi-Fi SSID to something like 'I am a scammer' or 'I commit identity theft' and blacklisting their devices. The address was in low income housing in Alabama I think.

@@JimBrowning I fully appreciate and approve of what they were trying to do, there just didn't seem to be any way through for our situation. I even escalated to the fraud department. No one mentioned coming into a store at any point during the several hours I was on the phone with them over several days.

@@Zanthum yeah the problem here is that they have implemented security on managing the account but not on setting it up in the first place. Ofc one major issue here is the lack of a national id in the US.

This is the first of your videos I've watched. The way you describe the layout of the office in combination with your awesome accent sounds like one of those nature shows they played in primary school and the narrator was laying out the area for us kids (we were at the time, anyway) to picture what we are seeing in relation to everything we have seen/are about to see. I don't know much about you, yet, but you could definitely be a narrator! (From my perspective, this is a high complement).

I just watched this video by Jim Browning, exposing a scam operation being run from Pakistan, and I can't help but feel a deep sense of shame. It hurts to see a small group of individuals tarnish the reputation of an entire nation, especially when there are so many honest, hardworking people here. I know this doesn't define us, but it’s disheartening to see the harm these scams cause, not just to the victims but also to how the world views us. I genuinely hope more awareness is raised, and that we can stand together to fight against these unethical practices. We can do better, and we must.

Employees of such fraudulent companies also harrass general public in their spare time, my friend was once harassed to an extent where she felt unsafe going out and once she shared that with me i asked for the numbers and after googling a lot i found one place that was operating less than a km from her house. Good thing we reported them to the cybercrime division and found out it was a whole call center in the basement of a house. Nothing makes me happier to see such scumbags going out of business and into prison.
