I was 10 years old, riding with my dad is his truck when he popped in Blizzard of Oz. Crazy Train started with the "Riff"....I remember being in shock as to what i was hearing. I looked at my dad in stunned amazement and said, "What is making the noise?" He said "Thats a guitar and the guy playing it is Randy Rhoads." I told my dad I wanted to learn to do that, and he took me straight to sam ash. Bought me my 1st guitar, amp, and signed me up for lessons no questions asked. Forever shaping the rest of my life. I owe a lot to both Randy and my father for gifting me the world of music. Randy will always be my biggest inspiration. RIP you legend and here's to hoping your music lives and inspires forever.

So cool that so many years later, the greats are still preaching how next level Randy was. One of the most unique and identifiable players every to have picked up the instrument. The worst part for me listening to Randy is I get so eff'n sad as I loved everything about his playing and he was such a fire breathing dragon, and he got taken sooo early in life from not only his family and friends, but from the world of guitar. He was so young and already one of the best to ever do it. One of the great rock and roll tragedies that he did not get more time to keep developing. I get sad as with Randy, there was no doubt he was still growing after already being one of the best. Long live his recordings to blow away and inspire guitarist for many years to come.

Revelation Mother Earth is one of the masterpieces when it comes to a solo. I remember writing that out on a sequencer on apple IIe (from a guitar magazine transcription) and recording the output to cassette. I grew up playing violin, started bass when I was 14, and that solo has an emotional tension and release that is not present in too many pieces. And, Over the Mountain was the song that got me into metal when a friend played me the vinyl. Both solos from these tracks are a song within a song. Randy was and is amazing.

Used to listen to the Tribute live album as a 7 yr old and on ALL the time. Same with the other Rhodes records. Wasnt a huve fan of the few guitarists after Randy, til No Reat For The Wicked came out. I dont care what anyone says, Zakks first record with Ozzy was a fucking MASTERCLASS of sick riff writing and soloing with feel. No More Tears was almost as good but didnt have the ferocity of Wicked. Ozzmosis had like 5 amazing songs on it, was a good record too. Randy was one of the ones that made me love guitar. Been playing since 1991. People laugh when i say who the main person that influenced me to play outside of Hetfield. It was Billy Joe from Green Day. Before u laugh, lol, i have good reason. I grew up with him and Mike Dirnt in Rodeo, Ca. My older brother was buddies eith em and i used to tag along and watch them practice. As a 12 yr old, watching a band play in a garage in the 80s was just awesome. Billy is actually a much better guitar player than most people have ever heard or seen. Anyways, i grew up in thr Bay Area thrash era and seen Metallica at Day On Thr Greens in Oakland, Ca and Machine Heads OG lineup, well with Kontos etc and Primus etc. Went to same summer school that Hammett went to school and Exodus i believe, DeAnza High. Mike Patton was dating my friend Rays sister Katy for a min. PussHead that did all Metallicas artwork for shirts in the 80s lived arounf the corner from ny grandma in Pinole/Tara Hills. Was a happening time. I didnt realize how good i had it then, it was inevitable i become a musician, lol

Since I began playing in 1986, the ONLY distortion pedal I've used is the MXR Dist +. There is no other.
@markgarner27253 ай бұрын
I'm with you, brother! I started playing in 1979. This was before Randy hit the scene. (I was first inspired to play by some guy named George Harrison, but I quickly got into the heavier stuff.) I had a Ross distortion* at the time. (* The Ross was basically a clone of the script logo D+ as used by Randy and so many others then.) The D+ appeared on my radar in 1981 when I first saw Rush. Alex Lifeson's equipment list was in the 'Moving Pictures' tour program, and the D+ was there. Then, in 1982, I caught Ozzy's Diary tour in New Orleans. Sadly, it was Brad Gillis, not Randy, on guitar. The tour program was printed before Randy left us, so... Again, I saw the D+ listed in the gear lists. In 1984, I bought the then-current D+. It was a new iteration called the 'Series 2000.' It was one of the last of the original MXR-brand pedals before they went bankrupt and were revived by Dunlop. That pedal into my little Fender Champ was insane. Three decades later, one of the pots started dying, so I bought the Dunlop D+, linked up the two, and used a Sharpie to mark my preferred settings on the FNG. I just bought the 15w EVH Iconic Series 5150 amp, and I can't wait to add the MXR Rhoads D+ to the signal chain. Years ago, I rewired a Strat with the same pickups in Randy's polka-dot V. I call it "Stormbringer." It's a beast. RR+EVH= Guitarmageddon, baby! 🎉
@Freedomrocker51502 ай бұрын
I’ve always wondered what could have been. Personally i believe Evh was on the same level at the time and I personally think there could have been a friendly feud between Evh and Rhodes and I won’t be surprised if they tried to one up each other and push each others limits. They were both revolutionaries.

I love MXR, been using them for 20+ years. Dunlop has the best customer service I've used in any product (admittedly I haven't needed to use them in years but...) With that said, I bought a used block letter Distortion+, and it was… terrible. The distortion was harsh and muddy. Due to the controls being really interactive, I couldn't use it for anything. Roll the gain down and it rolls off all the top end and upper mids and the volume drops. Roll up the tone and you basically lose the bass, which is all that's audible. I tried different values, diodes… I ended up raping it for parts for the next couple years and repurposing the enclosure. Maybe I got a bad one or a bad version. It's the only one I've tried.

Listen to Randy's isolated tracks. His tone was terrible on its own but it sat in the mix really well.

The break up on the album on the crazy train riff..Sounds like a pulley rattling on a steal line.
