gi made sense when the basically the whole world wore coats with lapels for cultural reasons (think 19th centruy when most "civilized" men wore modern suits no matter the weather, including japanese men like judo's founder jigoro kano). no gi grips are available no matter your opponents choice of clothes, gi grips are completely dependent upon them. in reality, you should only devote a small portion of time to training in the gi, unless you live in extreme cold regions and are primarily concerned with getting into fights outdoors with other people in parkas.
