I don't think she became part of her own toxic fandom, because her toxic fandom was fomed in a honest way. She seems to just want to "look cool for the kids" and/or not look critically to her own work and her own person. Like, The whole thing about Dumbledore being gay despite the fact that are no lines (that i am aware off) in the books that comes close to hinting to the fact that Dumbledore is gay. In the movies you would more inclined to say that he is assexual, considering that he appears to not have any romantic interests whatsoever. It seems that the main reason that dumbledore is gay is because she doesn't want to think that deeply about why she didn't wrote any character that wasn't straight.

It's tough. I suppose we can agree to disagree, but the line between total mystery or absolute certainty is where much interest lies in life, art, entertainment, media, and so on, considering we often make our own head canons about this kind of stuff. When it's done by the author years later, and as someone else said, involving stuff few, seemingly no body wanted to ask the _sauce_ herself about, it can get rough, messy, and grey. It's even worse when it directly contradicts stuff and/or feels like trouble-free, facile, and non-committal "attempts" at some kind of brownie points, deflecting responsibility, too, for that matter.

The thing they're debating here is "Death Of The Author" - the idea that it doesn't matter what the author's intent was, people can interpret things based on their own perception and context. I mean, infamously, Fahrenheit 451 was intended to be about how the author was worried that book reading would die out because people watched too much TV...but hardly anyone ever interprets it that way. Of course, an author's intent about their work isn't meaningless, but how much weight it has is completely subjective and reliant on context. (Personally, I don't take a lot of what Rowling has to say about HP too seriously, since it's mostly her trying to appease her fanbase by delivering their own years-old memes and in-jokes back to them.)
@Treblaine2 жыл бұрын
Though it's a fair point, although book burning is obviously heavily associated with censorship due to how real-life book burning by was hand in hand with cross-media censorship, was his book actually about how ideas were being censored across all media or simply a particular medium was being destroyed to force another medium? It put forward some bold propositions that there's something special about getting ideas written on paper and bound in a book rather than getting the information from a screen but does that actually exist outside the fiction of the book?
@MoonGalleon222 жыл бұрын
@@Treblaine Oh yeah, the real life book-burnings that happened in the run-up to the Second World War is something that really informs that interpretation, and I think there's elements of being anti-censorship in Bradbury's writing; that kind of context isn't useless, and the author's views can be relevant. My point though is that the book is "actually about" whatever you personally interpret it as being. That's the point of "death of the author". Grave Of The Fireflies, to give an anime example, is another text where the intentions of the writer and directer might be different from how people interpreted the finished work (food for thought: is a film innately portraying an "anti-war" message if it is about people suffering due to war?).

When I first saw "evangelion" written down I thought it was with a "j" sound on the G because, of course, evangelical/evangelism and the commonly used word "angel".

The root word is εὐαγγέλιον which is pronounced their preferred way. Turning hard 'g's into 'dzhee's is mostly english shtick.
@akshayhere2 жыл бұрын
@@spagetter sure. Though if we're going that route, every pronunciation is under attack then. Joey's argument was regarding English pronunciation of Graphic, thus same criteria for evangelion
@spagetter2 жыл бұрын
@@akshayhere Evangelion as a word doesn't exist in english. It's directly lifted from greek, same way as Ayanami Rei pronounced as Ehyenehmee Ray would be considered butchering. GIF is an abbreviation-turned-word. English pronounciation rules dictate 'Jeef', but as it's made up and takes first letters of existing words 'geef' also makes sense. You can consider it as the same thing, but retrofitting a pronounciation of derivatives onto original word from another language is odd. As 'evangelion' is not a 'word with foreign roots' but is a 'foreign word', either modified for local accents or original pronounciation are acceptable ways to pronouce. (whereas adapted words like "evangelical" have to be in line with final language's conventions) TL;DR Joey's way is internally consistent, even if not necessarily correct.

I'd like to share this fun history fact with you: the Romans didn't have toilet paper. Instead, they used a sponge on a stick called a xylospongium which means "sponge on a stick." Roman urban planning was very advanced for the time, and their cities contained many public toilets called foricae. But Romans weren't just great urban planners, they were also great environmentalists who recycled many things. One of those things was the xylospongium. They didn't just throw away that poop sponge, creating all sorts of unnecessary waste, each person that visited the public toilet would reuse the same poop sponge.
