Speak, brother Mussi!!! 42 years old here. I work in Law Enforcement. Art has always been my first passion. So on top of patrolling the streets, I launched and completed my first successful comic book series. I refused to sleep until I made it happen. And now, Decided to get into 3D art. I Just started Zbrush and I wanted to give up. The technical side was too frustrating. I felt too old to learn something new. But I kept putting in the hours and it was worth it. Finished my first sculpture. Got a long way to go, but I’m finally starting to understand the language, and technology behind 3D art. I have tons of respect for 3D artist, especially self taught. You see a totally different perspective of 3D other than video games. And I love it. You spoke the straight FACTS!! Subscribed!💯💯💯

Yea dude, I agree with JL Mussi. I jumped into 3D, without much knowledge about it, at the age of 32. I'm a former Marine, looking into Law Enforcement like every other veteran. Im a traditional 2D artist so 3D wasnt my first choice. Too technical for me. My friend suggested turning my portfolio to Gnomon and I got in. Best decision of my life. I'm 37 now and working well. My older brother loves what I do and decided to jump ship from realestate to VFX. He's 39 btw. He's halfway done through school and he's doing really well. He loves what he does now.

I'm a retired commercial artist with 35 plus years in the industry. I'm 71 this year. I enjoy Blender but don't see it as a new career path. Making the transition into ANY KIND of commercial art is difficult. It took me 6 years to get my BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, but I never got to use those skills commercially. I made good money early on doing boring stuff like packaging design and point-of-purchase displays. Later, I got into website design, HTML coding, video editing, formatting for web and some Flash animation code. Main thing I've learned is the extreme importance of having a good foundation in art..how to draw, color theory, composition, etc....knowing what looks good. Without that, you won't know what you're trying to achieve in animation or any other art form. Good luck and best wishes to all you young artists out there! Have fun!!!

I did over 15 years video game development working with 3D Studio MAX, Maya, Multigen (Silicon Graphics), Gradiant (Call of Duty), Unreal Game Engine. Now, I've moved on to Multimedia Designing using Maya, 3D Max, Cinema 4D and all the fun plug-ins. I'm in my early 50's now, still doing what I love using my artistic strengths. The pay is good but I can do better, I need to create passive income on the side so I can retire comfortably. Like yourself, I grew up the same way you did, it took time and grit to keep this going. It ain't easy but it's worth it. Keep up the great work, JL. Peace.

I just started my 3D journey a week ago and not to be toxic the whole video got me sort of demotivated. Yeah I'm relatively young (I'm 28), but I just want to be someone in the end of the day. I've tried many different occupation in my life and even managed to be kinda successful in some of them and now a week ago I just realized that I have an opportunity to get closer to video games through 3D art, however I wasn't really artistic my previous life, idk if don't have that spark or just never had a chance to find myself in it but once I finished with the donut I was so exited. And now you're telling me that people with an art diploma and 6+ years of paid learning have to work for free until (if ever) they get hired, otherwise they just have to quit art for a regular job to pay bills and consider the time they've spent on 3D arts wasted? The first bit of info you gave us on yourself when you ended up being in school for six years really made me feel a lot better about how long it's taken me with my current education. It took me 3 years to get into school because I'm low income and needed to get assistance from the government in my country. I'm disabled and so I had to prove to them that I was interested. Then when I was in school I got an RSI and had to leave for another year and a half. I've been feeling a bit crushed, not being able to keep up with the rest of the classmates and having spent so much time already in this. It didn't occur to me that a lot of other 3D artists might of been in the same boat.

This is hard facts! I'm 32 now and I'm getting back into 3D modeling! I studied it in school using 3DS max which sucks now that they want over 200$/month but digress. I'm learning Blender now but the advice is spot on. I know my fundamentals already. My main industry is music and use FL Studio and age don't matter. Software don't matter. Just make art. It's all repetition. It's gym reps. I think what stops most people is their desire is misunderstood. It's not that they want to make games but BE KNOWN and admired for it. It's an assumption but I think that is what holds back sooooooo many creatives; the desire to be good without the curiosity of the process misses the whole point IMO. I don't set out to make a beat but experiment. What comes of that is a beat. So..... Be willing to fail......a lot. Nobody knows who you are at this point so be free to just try things and don't be ashamed of it. On the "Exposure" Trap. It depends. Check the companies socials and see if their legit on the possible views on your work and I've learned that companies that usually have that, will usually just pay you. Anyone selling you exposure with no social media vision/plan/blueprint is lying to you.

I never had any sort of technical background and still dived headfirst in an MA to 3D animation, modelling and digital effects. You are so right in pushing through the technical barrier. I was terrified of these programs, I never heard of Maya or 3dsmax! Now I'm worried about the lack of time I have in learning everything I can get my hands on. DUDE! My class was awful too. To set the scene, it was 18 years ago, I was 19 yrs old at the time. In the class we used 3d studiomax (what 3dsmax was called back in the day.) So the class sucked first of all. The instructor went too fast and I usually fell behind. There were no videos to watch at home to catch up. For the final, I had a 3d house I made and animated the doors opening and a 1st person perspective walkthrough of the house. It was maybe a min long. Next up was Mirus Made. Aka Chad Mirus. Dude ruined the class for me (it was actually my own mindset.) So his video goes up and it's a 4 minute star wars space dog fight scene complete with music sfx and particle effect. I thought "how can I compete with that?!" Obv he was using the software long before the class. I didnt realize that, shot I wish we dropped everything in a fuckong box. Maybe I'd have 18 years experience now. So, here I am now, 37 years old, been a cop for 12 years and I HATE it. How do I give up a pension, health insurance and job security for the unknown? I dont know the answer to that, but, here is what I do know. I do a few hours every day as consistently as possible. I've signed up to Gnomon Workshop and work every day. At the moment I'm learning Zbrush. So far its coming along decent. Better than I thought it would. I'm not the best 2D artist though, at least on traditional paper and pencil. I'm excited to try 2d art in photoshops where I can use the software to cheat. Ie create perfectly straight lines, ctrl shift to undue etc.. Jlmussi thanks for the video! Love your channel and the stuff you put out. This video made a difference for me. I've always felt super behind. This helps mentor move forward from that mindset a bit.

I feel your pain I had a professor that was absolute garbage. His area of expertise was ceramics but he taught himself the toolset in 3d Max R2.5 so the college gave him the job. We learned nothing from him and as a class we had to teach ourselves during lab time. We spent all of our spare time in the lab (7 days a week) learning things and when someone figured out something new we shared it so everyone could learn. We learned a lot as a collective and also felt cheated when people who were taking the class that had all the major 3d software programs and high end computers for years took the class and just kitbashed their way to an A in the course. You know what? The hell with them they didn't learn anything. Never give up on your passions and dreams. If your pension and benefits mean that much to you do the 8 more years to secure your pension while building up an amazing portfolio and go get the job of your dreams. I'm 46 and working on my portfolio to leave education where I earn $50 an hour but I hate it because I am absolutely bored with graphic design and want to go back to 3d where I know I will be happy.

@@marcacurso7756 thanks for the reply and sharing your story. I love that you mentioned finishing my career for another 8 years. I am pretty close and earning a pension while also gaining the skills for another job is totally doable. I'd carve out a nice life if I can accomplish that. A big concern I have is what am I giving up by playing it safe? On one hand, I could lose out on a pension if I leave early. That's no small thing. On the other, what if I was able to enter the industry and find some success and a whole new world/happiness? Man, I couldn't imagine the lifestyle change. Going from Chicago to LA. Dreary weather to sunshine. Negative cynical people and criminals to enthusiastic coworkers sharing art and passion. @Jl Mussi, I love the Gnomon stuff. The video selection is huge and comprehensive. The only thing I wish I had access to was speaking with the instructors for questions. I feel learning from people who are presently working in the industry is necessary for my education. Feeling behind starting at an older age, I don't have time to unlearn bad habits or improper workflow. I just created an Artstation and linked my first attempt at Zbrush. Come take a look! www.artstation.com/artwork/aR3QKL

I am 20 years old and I am starting to study 3D Design / Animation / VFX in October. So far I have studied electrical engineering and information technology, but I dropped out because my dream is 3D animation. I had to hear a lot about my decision and I hope this wasn't a stupid decision.

Hey man,I am a big fan of 3d character modeling/sculpting . I am selftaught for 5 years so far. I can show you my work by email....but Im not that good in painting or drawing. So i want to ask is it ok to expect a job as a 3d modeler without texturing skills? Its a really painin the ass to do all that stuff because sculpting ,modeling, grooming, uvs, retopo is hard by itself not to mention texturing/painting. + corrections when needed...oh man its crazy. I dont think I can be pro in all those skills.

Great video. I like your point on about the software is not as important as what will get the job done. Also I agree with doing work for exposure without pay is not always a good idea. I worked with start up company for awhile. I got to see how the workflow and got try different things. However in the long run, I had bills to pay and had stop there. Besides selling 3D model assets are there any other avenues you can recommend to make some money? Maybe a paid internship?

Awesome video bro! This may be a weird question but I am taking an intro to Digital media class and need some help. I need to find 3 different artists. A graphic design artist, a sound/video artist, and 2D/3D artist. Hoping someone here can point me towards where I can find some artists and their work so I can use on my school project.

Do you think that this day in age it’s good to go to school??? I’m thinking of taking this fast tracked degree plan because it’s not a Bachelors but it’s a way for me to get the associates in gaming simulation so I can get going to create my portfolio. I already utilize my iPad for digital creating and I have downloaded blender to practice. (Can’t afford the more expensive yet). But just trying to get going and get my portfolio started

Pretty late now. First of all, love the video. Secondly, is it a necessity to know 2d art for being a successful 3d artist? Or any kind of art?
