I’m not sure if Ive ever seen this much hate on a pedal review. “no Marshall amp sounds the same” than what is this “Marshall sound” people have talked about? Or the “vox sound”? This thing ‘replicates’ a Dumble pretty darn well at a very small fraction of the price for the average consumer. I watched a “shootout” of several ‘dumble-type pedals’ and this will be the one I get!

You would use this at the end, not beginning. Thinking of the guitar as the first thing and amp as the last thing. This would be treated as an amp. Can you have a guitarist play some of SRV licks that sound like SRV dumble tones so I can get an idea of what the SRV dumble tones are when using this steel string supreme pedal because if someone buys this pedal how do you get the SRV dumble tones?
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
Put a TS-808 in front of it presumably. We'll get more demos in the future. Also see Sweetwater's demo that went live today, it has a little bit of "Change It" on there.
@waynegram89074 жыл бұрын
@@VertexEffectsInc can you make a new dumble pedal that only has a bunch of SRV dumble tones that are preset switches so you don't have to adjust knobs for hours to get those SRV dumble tones. I rather have the dumble pedal already be modified and focused on giving those clean glassy texas SRV tones. What I got out of the sweetwaters demo today was that the dumble pedal adds more harmonics and overtones getting those cleans sound very chimey and twanging I'm guessing.
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
I could but you could just add a tube screamer to this and be there
@waynegram89074 жыл бұрын
@@VertexEffectsInc I will try it with a tube screamer. But I'm not look for overdrive dumble tones. I'm looking for clean SRV dumble tones that SRV got using a dumble amplifier to get those glassy twangy texas tones. They make a tube screamer which I like that has Two Mid tone knobs which you can get more mids upper and middle Hz. This is the only way to get those SRV dumble overdrive tones to really push those mids on the tube screamer that has two mid control knobs to get SRV tones.
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
@@waynegram8907 I know what you're saying, but again, my point is that two different guys with the same amp can sound quite different. Depends on how you set the amp, your gear, the player. Also SRV used Fenders, Marshall Major, and other amps at the same time with the Dumble so they weren't all covering the same frequencies. A lot of SRV's stuff still had on the TS and the mids were still present but he didn't use much gain on the TS, mostly used level and tone and used the TS to control the low end on his bottom heavy amplifiers. Sort of a different application that you see most folks use a TS pedal. Stay tuned for some more demos with this tone in mind!

I simply doesn’t hear it 🤷🏻♂️I have no A/B sound as a reference. It sounds good but I’m not convinced that it will change the sound and feel of the amp. I have a Twin Reverb and I can get close to that sound with the amp alone. Whenever I put a Klon-style pedal infront of it (or any other good overdrive pedal), I get a pretty good ”John Mayer” tone out of my TR. Still not quite convinced that your SSS-pedal will stiff the amp enough and remove ”flobby” bottom end while maintaining that clear high end sound.
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
Interestingly enough, David Ryan Harris, the guy that's been a sideman for John Mayer for over a decade, sent me a text as said "the tone in Vultures is the closest he's ever heard to JM's." That felt pretty validating from someone that would know if we hit the mark. I've also taken the Steel String to Bill Krinard house, the maker of your Two Rock amp, and he equally agreed that the pedals "nails it" - his words. It should also be said, that this isn't the only demo - Sweetwater has a really good knob turning on/off video. There are plenty of demos out there now showing different sounds and several more to come, so I recommend checking that out for more diversity in sound samples on Sweetwater and on our website. Remember we also has an actual Steel String Singer #001 as a reference, so that also helped along the way to get the feel and overall sound right bring the Dumble clean tone vibe, to the degree possible, to a clean amplifier or clean amp channel. This video is just one representation, so I hope you'll check out the others a well if you're interested in pairing this with your Twin, which I think would be an ideal amp for this pedal. Thanks for watching Tobias!

@@VertexEffectsInc Mason, I hope you are safe and well. I really like the concept of the new SSS pedal, but I agree with Tobia's remarks: from the demoes I have seen thus far, I don't feel it. I have your SS Clean Drive (SRV limited edition), and I love it - I will stay tuned for new demoes, as I am looking for excuse to buy the new version ...

@@VertexEffectsInc Hi Mason! I’m sure that, when hearing it in a room with a Dumble or Dumble-style amp, it hold’s up well. But I just felt that in this video there was nothing to give me a refrence. Like an original track vs your pedal or an like on/off scenario. My biggest concern is that an amplifier that lacks the foundation for a great tone, won’t just magically turn in to a D-style amp. In my understanding, the Steel String Singer is a mix an match and match between a lot of great amplifiers with some of Dumbles own typology, but the feel of the amp can’t be faked. And that didn’t come across this video unfortunatly. The tone was alright in my opinion but I couldn’t really tell what the pedal does to the amp/tone. I’ll head over to Sweetwaters site and watch their videos to see if I can get convinced that it does what you at Vertex claims that it does. I wish I had a local dealer so I could try it instead but what to do? Thanks!
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
@@Tobajjass I appreciate the feedback and I think by the time you see a few more of the demonstrations you’ll have more of an understanding of that, the other thing to understand is not one demo will see everything it needs to to encompass everything on the pedal, so we usually try to have a lot of overlaying demonstrations so that you can understand it from different perspectives.

Any chance of making a tube version of this? Two notes le clean seems to be the only thing like that.
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
Not a good value IMO for guitar pedals. We just don't have the voltage available to really get the tubes working like they would in an amplifier without really increasing the cost to manufacture to the point where this pedal would be a hard sell at market. I think if you're going into a tube amplifier (or even high quality cab modeling) you'd be surprised on how close you can get with FET's or Mu-Followers in this case.

Hi Mason, I've recently purchased the SSS and I wonder if it will work if the pedal is not the last in the chain before I plug it into a cab sim pedal (ENGL Cabloader). I'd like to put some modulation/Delay/reverb after de SSS, and then plug it into the cab sim. It will work properly as a peramp? Or should the SSS always be the last in the chain? Thank you in advance!
@VertexEffectsInc2 жыл бұрын
I would go with the SSS into your Cab Loader, then the unbalanced out of the Cab Loader to your Mod, Delay, Reverb, and then to FOH. I'd keep the power amp on the 6L6 setting and the G1265 speaker for the most "Dumble" response.
@NotonlyMusik2 жыл бұрын
@@VertexEffectsInc thanks for the answer! Should the ENGL Cabloader input be set as Instrument or as Line? I suppose is instrument, but idk how SSS manages the output impedance and level. Thanks :)

Pretty sure the "continuum" sound was an EL34 dumble overdrive special with a deluxe reverb.....
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
For the lead sounds it was on some, but not for the clean. Deluxe was used for some Rhythm parts, on Slow Dancing, as was a Pioneer stereo receiver. He also had his SSS and Two Rock amplifiers for this as well.
@ollypowell4 жыл бұрын
@@VertexEffectsInc could you tell me where you got your information on the pioneer stereo receiver? I cant find any information on that.
@alejoriverac4 жыл бұрын
Continuum was recorded since January 05. He didn't had the SSS 002 (way different than 001, everyone knows that) back then. He got 002 on early 06. In fact, I'm gonna quote John here: "So the first half of Continuum was recorded with the ODS and then the SSS came in and replaced it - handily." But we all know too that John used several amps on the studio, like other Dumbles (Overdrive Reverb, more than one ODS), the Deluxe Reverb or a Marshall 'BluesBreaker' amp, with the real constant all over the record being Two Rock amps. That's the actual Continuum sound. He toured mostly with Two Rock amps, then with Two Rock and ODS. Then a Sterling (SSS 004 clone, even waaaaaaaaaaay more different than 001). The SSS didn't showed up on tour until 08 (even after Where The Light Is), and it's hard to consider that "Continuum tour" still. This is all public information. There's no myths or rumours. Oh, another John's quote: "As for using amp overdrive, I haven't ever really engaged it all that much." So this clic-bait title should be, if so: "HALF of JM Continuum Dumble tone".

I wonder if this pedal can dial in those sound city amplifiers clean tones like what Hendrix clean tones in the wind cries mary. The sound city amps had this midrange belltone cleans that had different harmonics. If you modify this pedal to get those sound city amplifier midrange harmonics would be nice modification to do to this pedals circuitry.
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
There are some limitation in the amp you start with but as far as pedals go, you can really use it a lot to EQ and shape an amplifier even with dissimilar tubes and voicing to a typical Dumble style clean amp.
@waynegram89074 жыл бұрын
@@VertexEffectsInc yes because Hendrix used sound city amps for his clean tones was wondering if this SS pedal might be able to get those sound city midrange harmonics. Adding in those sound city overtones and harmonics. I think the SS pedal like you said shapes an amplifiers clean channel to voice it to a dumble clean amp.

I tried this pedal today through a milkman amp (fender voiced) and a marshal and vox voiced amp all being valve and it sounds incredible though each amp. I want one but I have some questions as I find this pedal somewhat confusing 1. If the original vertex steel string pedal emulates an amp already then surely I can just put the original one through a cab simulator and play it through a PA or computer there for not being to much different to this new one? 2. Guitar amps always have tone controls eg treble,middle,bass so this being plugged into a cab simulator I still don’t get how tone controls come into play?
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
Glad you dig it! 1) you can, it's not going to sound great. The new version only has half of the original SS pedal in it. You need to use both channels if you're going to go direct with the best results. 2) You have Tone (EQ) controls on the SSS: The Filter, The Rock/Jazz, The Bright/Deep all will EQ the pedal to your liking.

@@VertexEffectsInc thanks for the reply Would something like the NUX mini studio cab sim pedal work with this? You also made some IRs for your cab simulator can I download them on any cab simulator pedal or is it made specifically for the cab sim pedal that you use?

@@VertexEffectsInc nice. Yea il probably get the “NUX studio mini” it’s cheap and looks simple. It can only hold 6 IRs but I think I’ll probably only ever need about 2. Another couple of questions I got 1. If I go direct into a guitar cabinet or direct into the cabinet of a modular amp like the kantana will I still need a cab sim pedal or is the cab sim pedal mainly for PA and plugging into your computer? 2. I think the NUX studio mini doesn’t have a power amp option it just has IRS/cab sim. That’s all I need right? 3. I noticed you turn up the steel string pedal a bit louder than the guitar amps volume kind of like how one would generally use a drive pedal. Do you find the steel string sounds best this way. 4. When the pedal is plugged into an amp do you find it’s best to find the best clean tone on the amp and then turn on the pedal and adjust the tone settings of the pedal from there or is it better to set the amps tone knobs to flat and then turn on the pedal and adjust the tone using the pedal? Sorry for all the questions it’s just that I want to know I’m getting the right thing and doing everything correctly. If I have time in the afternoon tomorrow I will pick up the SSS pedal from my local shop!
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
@@thisisme4858 1) You can't go direct into a cabinet unless you have a power amp that the pedal feeds. If you go direct into your DAW you will want to have some sort of IR loader/cab sim. 2) That's fine, you don't need the power amp emulation if you're doing the IRs and simulating the cab digitally. 3). We were using it to create a little clipping of the input stage, typically we run the output volume down and the input volume up to get a little break up on the pedal. You can exaggerate that or clean it up depending on what you want. 4) I think the pedal sounds best in the clean or clean-ish amplifier and then use the pedal to either EQ using one channel and do a gain/volume boost with the other. I set the clean amp the way you like it and make the pedal work around that.
