I’m not sure if Ive ever seen this much hate on a pedal review. “no Marshall amp sounds the same” than what is this “Marshall sound” people have talked about? Or the “vox sound”? This thing ‘replicates’ a Dumble pretty darn well at a very small fraction of the price for the average consumer. I watched a “shootout” of several ‘dumble-type pedals’ and this will be the one I get!
@VertexEffectsInc2 жыл бұрын
Anytime "Dumble" is invoked many people seem to compare it against something that they've never heard. To my knowledge we're the only brand that actually used a real SSS to voice the pedal for accuracy.

@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
You would use this at the end, not beginning. Thinking of the guitar as the first thing and amp as the last thing. This would be treated as an amp. However I would put delay/reverb effects after it if you're going to go into a cab sim or IR loader. congratulations, Mason. It’s great to hear how good the steel string is doing (I love mine!). It’s clear that you’ve added nothing but features that I could immediately use! I mentioned on Instagram that I have been making mine into a Swiss Army knife of various uses in the studio and, again soon I hope, with clients out in the wild. 2. I love how good it sounds with an affordable tube amplifier. (my favorite of the two in the video) ... imagine how convenient that will be on tours of small venues! I mean I would love to travel with a five tube SSS head everywhere...but, small venues won’t benefit from that anyway. All I have to do is put on my rider that the venue must provide a standard fender tube amplifier with an FX return (is that how you recorded it here? Did you plug it into the preamp or the return?) and I have the same tone every night without paying the freight to haul the head around! I always travel with a low headroom vintage amp, I’m a two amp guy... it’s light. Now with this, it’s like you get a “free” two rock delivered nightly to join in. One can also use that sound for stage and use IR out for FOH! Exciting!

I'm impressed your DI sounds the same as the miced amp! Would this work going direct into a Two notes Captor X? I've been killing myself trying to get a Dumbleesque sound lately - before dropping 2,700.00 on a Two-Rock 35 Watt head. I just bought a Cornerstone Gladio and dig it for cascading gain stuff. But now I'm thinking this SSS might be the topper-offer I need. Any chance you can sell me some small silver knobs to use with it to make it look more Dumblly? Love your stuff and love your vibe bro.
@ChadWork14 жыл бұрын
The amps I'm working with are the '68 Reissue Fender Princeton, REVV D20, and the Mesa LoneStar Special. Hard to dial in that D sound on any of them.
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
Isn't the Captor X a Load? You don't need the load part of it for this, just the cab simulation. I've been using the Cab M for this an we have our own IRs that you can download for free on Sweetwater's website based on my Dumble cabinets and ones that we took IRs of. They're dissimilar pedals, that's doing more of the ODS thing, where is this would be more for the cleans and give you a direct option if you needed to go ampless. The Dumble knobs won't work on this device, the skirts make them unusable without making the box bigger.
@ChadWork14 жыл бұрын
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks, I've already downloaded the cabs! Anyway, I know I don't need the load part of the Captor X, but I don't know if I can still use it. Would the load part make it incompatible with the SSS going in direct?
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
@@ChadWork1 I'm not sure of the circuitry and whether that can be bypassed on it. You may need to ask Two Notes as there are not real establish standards I've seen on these reactive load boxes. @VertexEffectsInc2 жыл бұрын
I would go with the SSS into your Cab Loader, then the unbalanced out of the Cab Loader to your Mod, Delay, Reverb, and then to FOH. I'd keep the power amp on the 6L6 setting and the G1265 speaker for the most "Dumble" response.

@@VertexEffectsInc thanks for the answer! Should the ENGL Cabloader input be set as Instrument or as Line? I suppose is instrument, but idk how SSS manages the output impedance and level. Thanks :)

Can you have a guitarist play some of SRV licks that sound like SRV dumble tones so I can get an idea of what the SRV dumble tones are when using this steel string supreme pedal because if someone buys this pedal how do you get the SRV dumble tones?
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
Put a TS-808 in front of it presumably. We'll get more demos in the future. Also see Sweetwater's demo that went live today, it has a little bit of "Change It" on there.
@waynegram89074 жыл бұрын
@@VertexEffectsInc can you make a new dumble pedal that only has a bunch of SRV dumble tones that are preset switches so you don't have to adjust knobs for hours to get those SRV dumble tones. I rather have the dumble pedal already be modified and focused on giving those clean glassy texas SRV tones. What I got out of the sweetwaters demo today was that the dumble pedal adds more harmonics and overtones getting those cleans sound very chimey and twanging I'm guessing.
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
I could but you could just add a tube screamer to this and be there
@waynegram89074 жыл бұрын
@@VertexEffectsInc I will try it with a tube screamer. But I'm not look for overdrive dumble tones. I'm looking for clean SRV dumble tones that SRV got using a dumble amplifier to get those glassy twangy texas tones. They make a tube screamer which I like that has Two Mid tone knobs which you can get more mids upper and middle Hz. This is the only way to get those SRV dumble overdrive tones to really push those mids on the tube screamer that has two mid control knobs to get SRV tones.

@@waynegram8907 I know what you're saying, but again, my point is that two different guys with the same amp can sound quite different. Depends on how you set the amp, your gear, the player. Also SRV used Fenders, Marshall Major, and other amps at the same time with the Dumble so they weren't all covering the same frequencies. A lot of SRV's stuff still had on the TS and the mids were still present but he didn't use much gain on the TS, mostly used level and tone and used the TS to control the low end on his bottom heavy amplifiers. Sort of a different application that you see most folks use a TS pedal. Stay tuned for some more demos with this tone in mind!

It would be brave if tested on a marshall / vox / matchless amp. Im just curious. I wonder whats the difference between using option 1. Fender black strat + fender amp or option 2: Fender black strat + fender amp + the pedal.
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
I think you'll be fine with that many tone controls and toggles. It's designed to be pretty versatile in the Dumble EQ range no matter the amp.

How would one of these sound in a series effects loop with a post master volume returns signal path? Before wet reverb and delay of course?

Not designed for that application. It's really to run in series with other pedals or a modeler IR cab/power amp sim.

Mason... Can you run this into an efx return, then out of the power amp stage and into and reactive load/cab sim? (Use it as a preamp)

I would use it in front of an amplifier as my first choice, second choice I don’t think there’s any benefit going into the return versus just going into a high-quality cab simulation like that from Two Notes

Pedal sounds amazing! I'm using one at the moment. However whenever I engage it it makes a lot of noise. I've tried it with isolated power supplies and different cables and same results. Any ideas?

If I were going direct to front-of-house... How would this best be used in combination with a strymon iridium?

You really wouldn’t need the iridium if you have a cab sim - but otherwise I’d run it before delay and reverb and then the iridium

Any chance of making a tube version of this? Two notes le clean seems to be the only thing like that.
@VertexEffectsInc3 жыл бұрын
Not a good value IMO for guitar pedals. We just don't have the voltage available to really get the tubes working like they would in an amplifier without really increasing the cost to manufacture to the point where this pedal would be a hard sell at market. I think if you're going into a tube amplifier (or even high quality cab modeling) you'd be surprised on how close you can get with FET's or Mu-Followers in this case.

Gday Mason This looks great! I play some gigs through hotrod deluxe and others through hx stomp. Would you suggest placing the sss last after other drives (archer, ts etc) in the position a preamp would traditionally be? Also would this take the place of my helix amp sim?
@VertexEffectsInc3 жыл бұрын
Yes, after drives. If you're using the Hot Rod, I would keep the SSS in front. If you're going direct. I would use the IR package from the HX Stomp to get the cabinet simulations since the SSS is doing the head only, not the cab.

I simply doesn’t hear it 🤷🏻♂️I have no A/B sound as a reference. It sounds good but I’m not convinced that it will change the sound and feel of the amp. I have a Twin Reverb and I can get close to that sound with the amp alone. Whenever I put a Klon-style pedal infront of it (or any other good overdrive pedal), I get a pretty good ”John Mayer” tone out of my TR. Still not quite convinced that your SSS-pedal will stiff the amp enough and remove ”flobby” bottom end while maintaining that clear high end sound.
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
Interestingly enough, David Ryan Harris, the guy that's been a sideman for John Mayer for over a decade, sent me a text as said "the tone in Vultures is the closest he's ever heard to JM's." That felt pretty validating from someone that would know if we hit the mark. I've also taken the Steel String to Bill Krinard house, the maker of your Two Rock amp, and he equally agreed that the pedals "nails it" - his words. It should also be said, that this isn't the only demo - Sweetwater has a really good knob turning on/off video. There are plenty of demos out there now showing different sounds and several more to come, so I recommend checking that out for more diversity in sound samples on Sweetwater and on our website. Remember we also has an actual Steel String Singer #001 as a reference, so that also helped along the way to get the feel and overall sound right bring the Dumble clean tone vibe, to the degree possible, to a clean amplifier or clean amp channel. This video is just one representation, so I hope you'll check out the others a well if you're interested in pairing this with your Twin, which I think would be an ideal amp for this pedal. Thanks for watching Tobias!

@@VertexEffectsInc Mason, I hope you are safe and well. I really like the concept of the new SSS pedal, but I agree with Tobia's remarks: from the demoes I have seen thus far, I don't feel it. I have your SS Clean Drive (SRV limited edition), and I love it - I will stay tuned for new demoes, as I am looking for excuse to buy the new version ...

@@VertexEffectsInc Hi Mason! I’m sure that, when hearing it in a room with a Dumble or Dumble-style amp, it hold’s up well. But I just felt that in this video there was nothing to give me a refrence. Like an original track vs your pedal or an like on/off scenario. My biggest concern is that an amplifier that lacks the foundation for a great tone, won’t just magically turn in to a D-style amp. In my understanding, the Steel String Singer is a mix an match and match between a lot of great amplifiers with some of Dumbles own typology, but the feel of the amp can’t be faked. And that didn’t come across this video unfortunatly. The tone was alright in my opinion but I couldn’t really tell what the pedal does to the amp/tone. I’ll head over to Sweetwaters site and watch their videos to see if I can get convinced that it does what you at Vertex claims that it does. I wish I had a local dealer so I could try it instead but what to do? Thanks!
@VertexEffectsInc4 жыл бұрын
@@Tobajjass I appreciate the feedback and I think by the time you see a few more of the demonstrations you’ll have more of an understanding of that, the other thing to understand is not one demo will see everything it needs to to encompass everything on the pedal, so we usually try to have a lot of overlaying demonstrations so that you can understand it from different perspectives.
