A lot of people miss the optimistic theme if this song. He's not reaigned to it just being the way it is. Instead its the characters in the song saying so, and he's saying "no, don't believe that. We can be better".

There is a strong feeling in the south of tradition, and this makes folks despair of change. It’s a very southern concept, “that’s just the way it is.”

Great commentary on this song. Bruce Hornsby is such an incredible pianist. He accompanies Bonnie Raitt on her song. “I can’t make you love me”. One of the most beautiful breakup songs ever recorded. I hope you will find time for it.

I have loved this song since it first came out, and I had loved the piano on Raitt's song from the moment that came out, but I didn't learn until a year ago that was Hornsby playing piano for Raitt.

Bruce Hornsby is an amazing Human Being. Seen him umpteen times with his band and both opening for and then performing with the Grateful Dead. As for the video being blocked, it seems strange because I've seen many reactors do it, with no problems. You Tube is just waaaay too fickle, so sad. Doesn't stop Bruce's talent though.

...ah but don't you believe them". Timeless song that's as relevant now as it was when he wrote it. This song is about as perfect as a song can be. His piano playing is incredible to listen to but even better to see him play. Watch the music video if you haven't seen it.

I grew up in the tidewater Virginia peninsula area, very near Williamsburg where Bruce Hornsby lived(s). Not only is Bruce a very successful and talented singer/songwriter he is an awesome human being as well. He is very well liked among other musicians and has collaborated with many top tier talents. When asked how he felt about his song being sampled, he said that the message in the song was still (unfortunately ) relevant and that not only would it reach a larger audience through Tupac’s music, but it would also renew interest in his music.

You need not wonder why Hornsby became a temporary member of the Grateful Dead, when Brent Midland passed. Bruce was what the band needed at that time, as they readied their regular, new, keyboardist for an arduous schedule.

Great breakdown, as always. If I can add to the perspective of 'that's just the way it its', I think it also suggests the reality that bad people will always exist, and to not let them have an influence. There has been, is and almost always will be racist people, a racist mindset..... and to not make it all about race....but just naysayers and negative people in general who love nothing more than to suggest to anyone what they are and are not capable of. It's a sickness, and is around in all walks of life. You carry a lot of wisdom, happy to support your channel. I'm glad I found it.

About racism and classism. Many people in lower income are treated like crap regardless of color. Racism has improved since the 60s, but still needs more. Classism is worse, people idolize celebrities and billionaires more than ever. Billionaires and celebrities are just people, often horrible people since when you can do anything, you may not think if you should. Love to our huge human family.

"That's just the way it is" is the line people actually used in years past when their bigotry was pointed out to them and they tried to pass it off. "Don't blame me. That's just the way it is." Hornsby in his time and place probably heard people say it.

*Tupac...🐐 RIP 😔. "CHANGES"* I can't believe that it's been *ALMOST 30 YEARS!!!* Rumor was that Pac didn't get permission to sample *"The Way It Is".* When Bruce found out, he wasn't very happy... *UNTIL* he heard Pac's version... still lingers and, the line, "Thats just the way it is", isnt some vacant that was then statement, because, even if we dont believe it, thats just the way it is-still. As you mentioned, the the political and personal action by those that dont want change, is powerful. And it just wont go away with laws (especially when the court can be changed in a heartbeat) or good intentions. Everyone must take extraordinary actions in stepping up, on the lowest social level-the everyday stuff.
