I met Lisa too. Such a divinely sweet and soulful presence. I’ve followed her on social media a bit. My instinct (not based on anything she has expressed directly) is that the fakeness of The Industry, its extreme demands on the psyche of women singers who are expected to be perfectly skinny, beautiful, and sexual wasn’t something she wanted to carry alone. She adored Luther and being a part of his background vocalists. She loved the work, and learned tons from Luther on how to perform and captivate a crowd with your talent and artistry, with elegance and class. She did her Rolling Stones solos for 20 years, where she was the female foil to rocker Mick Jagger, where she displayed lots of wild and raw sex appeal. And then she went back for the background when it was over. I think she retained as much of her authentic self as she could … Now she is solo and she can be Bohemian, focus on her artistry, and not be worried about her age or her weight. And I’m so here for it 🤌🏾🤌🏾

That finishing note sounded like Whitney! Lisa won her first Grammy in a tie with Patti Labelle. They were great friends. They also both loved and were close to Luther, personally and professionally. Patti once said that Lisa was one of those rare singers that the industry could not find a box for …and something to the effect that she was another Patti LaBelle and that she may never achieve the commercial success that she deserves.

Now when I tell you I have been waiting on YOU to analyze this performance from Ms. Lisa! She has sooo much control and fluidity in that high space of notes. It's unmatched! She's a singer that had (and has) a mega voice and can easily be up there with the greats of vocalists (career-wise) but she just didn't quite want the burdens that came with being a star. But she is a star! And dare I say that I have yet to hear anyone attempt to cover this song. Your duplication of her at 6:59 made my eyes widen! But you always match when you do that.
