As a religious man myself, I can really appreciate the more or less unbiased way you guys did the Joan of Arc series; you gave the objective facts (battles etc.), gave what was said, gave how people took it, and left it at that. Yolande of Aragon is such a fascinating woman and yet people still say 'oh, she sunk her claws into Charles VII, she manipulated him' like she wasn't the reason his faction even had a chance for decades and like she didn't have far superior political acumen than many of the men Charles surrounded himself with. Interesting side note: during her retirement, she trained up her young granddaughter named Margaret, who would eventually become Margaret of Anjou, Queen of England, wife to Henry VI, another powerful female figure who was trying to hold together a court brutally impacted by a mad sovereign.

@@dbilly121 um, how did his wife drive him insane? he was mentally frail from young teendom and lost it when the British lost the Hundred Years' War. she did not cause the civil war, pushing and pulling for supremacy in the regency councils did. queen regents had a long history in England and that was the precedent she was following, trying to rule for her son while her husband was incapacitated. it's not her fault that an equally corrupt man rebelled and decided he should rule instead. of course she's gonna fight for her son's rights.

I have to say that I really appreciate this more ambiguous telling of Joan of Arc. I had never heard her story in full and I'm glad that my first telling was one that allows more interpretation as to the validity of her claims and the source of her visions, without it being judgemental. It allows for an observer to make up his or her own mind whether the visions were harmful to her or benefited her. I think this might be my favorite series of Extra Credits, simply because of that fact.

It's kind of the ideal of retelling of historical events, to show the audience not to tell them how to think. But sometimes you do need to spell out exactly why a historical event is percieved in a certain way. There's a bit of psychology involved. Leading the horse to water, not forcing it to drink. The smart horses will drink by themselves. In school we're forced to drink, so naturally a lot of people stay away from history simply due to how it's forced upon people and the teaching methods used. It's like when in English the teacher forces the class to read a specific novel and write about it, simply the act of forcing people to read it is going to give a negative response from people. Even many years in the future they will probably never be able to enjoy that novel simply because of the method used to "teach" them. Good teaching is very difficult to do though, and of course many teachers are terribly underpaid for the work they do. In some cases they're just glorified babysitters in other cases it's a bit of the student not having a supportive parenting and a little bit of the teacher giving up hope and burnout from years of teaching the same material. So they build up a grove and become more set in stone and less willing to discuss the topic because they've had the same conversations for years. I mean, yeah extra credits did a great job. :p

In France she's called Jeanne d'Arc in case you're wondering how it's spelled. Joan of Arc would litterally translate to "Jeanne de Arc" but basically, d' = de if the next word starts with a vowel. So ABSOLUTELY NOT Jeanne Dark, as I once painfully read.

There are records of like a half dozen possible spellings for the word at the time though. Some are related to the local dialect of french, some are related to the spelling conventions of the time. Edit: at the time apostrophe wasn't used so they'd spell it "Darc", or "Day" as that's how it sounded like when spelled in the local dialect. It's also sometimes spelled Tarc and Tars. It's believed this "Arc" or as they pronounced it, "Ay", was a place. Her first name was generally spelled "Jehanne" as that's how it was spelled in the middle ages. That's how she signed. Apparently when asked, she said that she didn't know her family name but that in her region girls went by their mother's name, so she'd be Jehanne Vouthon or Jehanne Rommée, but she herself only went by Jehanne.

And a interesting note on that. She spelled her named Jehanne. But archic spelling plus she being a new to writing one should be careful about drawing to much conclusions based of that. And I even read it as Johanne . But I have a hard time reading her handwriting so.... Jeanne d'Arc is also what she is called in Sweden and I know in many other places. Though a lot of languages have there own translation of the name.

Well when it comes to Joan of Arc name I think is depends on local translation. She is not know as Joan of Arc in Sweden for example but jeanne d'arc. It may seem odd but English sometimes actually translate place names and even personal names, as do many other. So I would not say is like the English making her name universal known as Joan of Ark since that is not really the case. Most languages seem ether to use there own translated version or stay very close to the French name. So I say that is just a classical example of autocentrism there.

About the "Henry the V was really as French as Charles VII, it might as well have been..." argument. It cuts to a major consequence of that war: the formation of French and English national identities. At the start of the war, the Plantagenet kings were, basically, French high nobles with a side kingdom in England, and the Valois kings were kinglets balancing noble families in their council, and they all (nobles) spoke French. By the end in the 1400s, it was different. Countries had gone through the plague, the invention of artillery, dynastic change in the UK (not the Plantagenets with their roots in Anjou and Aquitaine any more), and by then the English were imposing their language, something they hadn't done to start with. So a war among nobles ignoring people had become one mobilising people's support for their king.

Joan didn't go to the church in Ste. Catherine de Fierbois to find the sword, but she did send the man responsible for her armor and weapons to get it. He at first asked the priest about it, to which he replied that he knew nothing of a sword. Nonetheless, they began to dig under the stones behind the alter and quickly found it. In Joan's trial testimony, she was clear that her voices, Saints Michael, Catherine and Margaret, said the sword would be found where it was and that it would have five crosses on the handle. Could she have known about the sword even though the Parrish priest had no recollection of it? Did she somehow know where it was before hand and made up the story of her voices saying where it was - in other words, did she lie? Jules Quicherat, the great French historian who published a massive work collecting all pertinent information of the life of Joan of Arc, declared that it would be wildly outside her character for her to lie, given that she promoted herself as a "Joan the virgin", which at the time conveyed a deep sense of incorruptibility. He also added that Joan's entire quest to obtain victory for the french Kingdom was built upon the highest possible virtues. She herself was intolerant of artifice and would uncover any she came upon.

That particular story where the Dauphin is hiding as Jehanne came to the court in Chinon, is false. Just another narrative to provide drama and a divine miracle from God. Jehanne came with Yolande d'Anjou, she knew exactly where the Dauphin was standing ! Furthermore, from the '' Vigiles of Charles VII '' , the encounter was at the gate of the Chinon' castle, which was the proper Medieval procedure/manner at the time. Yolande' mother was Violant of Bar, from the Duke of Bar. The Barrois , the same region where Joan of Arc was born !!

10:30 People *definitely* did not think about maps and borders back then like we today. They just didn't have the technology to accurately measure borders. So you can't really get a perfectly accurate map of ancient borders, because the land claims were often so ambiguous and became increasingly vague as distance increased. What modern cartographers usually do is map the area of physical control that a kingdom possessed, but even that is usually approximate.

In regards to Jeanne d'Arc being canonized, I've heard people claim it was likely meant to appease the French Third Republic, whose leaders had been on a mission since the 1890s to fully separate the French state from the Catholic church. This would explain how such an odd pick for saint made the cut; she could have made for a powerful symbol to attach the church onto french nationalism. No clue how close to reality this actually is but I thought it was an interesting idea. Regardless, it was too little, too late as the French Republicans had already reimagined their mythical maiden and thanks to artists like Eugène Delacroix Marianne wasn't going anywhere anytime soon.
