Don't get an olympic weightlifting bar tho, get a power bar. Weightlifting bars are expensive as hell, more flexible and the knurling on them is usually softer so they can slip from your back more easily while squatting, and they have very sensitive bearings (cause they need to rotate fast for cleans and snatches) but that also means they can't handle heavier loads that well and are a bit unstable and while they can handle getting slammed in the floor, you can damage them more easily if dropping them on racks. Powerbars on the other hand are stiffer, cheaper, most have a center knurl for squats and can handle being slammed on a rack

Jump rope is my first type of equipment. Right next to a pull up bar. But it is one of the easiest things to fit into any busy schedule, easy to transport. As far as exercise (diet obviously being #1 factor) , this was definitely responsible for my 100lb weight loss. Get a doorway pull-up bar; they're not "elite" but they're going to get the job done without breaking the bank. Go to Home Depot, buy some cam straps, two 7 inch cuts of 2 inch PVC pipe, two 3ft lengths of chains, and two carabiners to make blast straps. While you're at Home Depot pick up a 50lb bag of playground sand and some gorilla tape to sure up the bag so nothing leaks out of it. Total cost will be under $50 for everything and if you stick with it, you'll be able to get in better shape than most of the population.
@mrsnarks42916 жыл бұрын
Fuck all that. $50 is way too much to spend on a home gym. Step 1 - take sand from the playground and put it in used garbage bags and duct tape them into the shape of atlas stones. You can find bags placed at curbside on garbage day. You can just dump the trash out nearby where the bag was. If you want standards to place your new atlas stones on you can simply take a few garbage cans as well - try to find a few in different sizes. Unfortunately, you *will* have to pay for some duct tape if you don't have any. If you find yourself getting too strong for these bags, you can add weight to the bags with sections of chain. Lots of people just leave chains wrapped around their bicycles when they park them for some reason. You can just use those if you have a bolt cutter. Chains work better than the U shaped things that some people use, but they can also be used in a pinch. Step 2 - Go to construction sites and leave with anything heavy that's lying around. Slabs of concrete, sections of I beam, cement mixers, dump truck tires. The 3rd and 4th tires are sometimes a pain in the ass to get off of the dump trucks, but it's definitely worth the effort - tire flipping is the king of exercises. Pro tip - you might also be able to find some duct tape at these sites so you don't have to pay for the tape from step 1. Step 3 - use the railing on freeway overpasses to do pullups. Inside the overpass is acceptable, but outside is where the money is. Let's face it, you can't really, *really* get the most out of your butterfly pullups until you have complete 360 degree freedom. That overpass fence is just too much of a hindrance. Also, a well kept little know secret discovered by the Bulgarians in the 1970s is that car and truck exhaust is highly anabolic. Bill Phillips told me this, and I have never known Bill to be a source of shitty information. Total cost will be under $5 for everything.

I took some cargo straps and took the handles of resistance bands my mother once bought for herself (she's a physical therapist) to make diy monkii bars. monkii bars have grips shaped like trx but utilise two anchor points like rings and are portable but expensive. I think I'm gonna get some pvc pipe to make my own and more portable handles. We have a big basement room (it once contained a large oil tank for the heating system which we replaced with a gas heating system upon moving in and ripped out the tank) with a concrete ceiling. We screwed a hook for my punching bag (got it used for 40 EUR) into the ceiling and my mom screwed two more hooks, shoulder width apart, for a kinda cringey purpose into the ceiling on which I hang my diy suspension training system. I really have trouble with supporting positions (L-sit, dips etc) on my system so maybe I'll make some paralettes out of pvc pipe. I don't trust myself with making portable dip bars out of pvc pipe though. Maybe I'll get some grappling mats for solo drills, I really like martial arts but I can train only once a week so... My brother has got a barbell for lifting and I can borrow it from him.

If you got 300 bucks and next to no room, gymnastic rings, a few rubber bands and a (heavy) weight vest is the way to go. You can do pretty much anything and everything for your upper body on gymnastic rings and you have to bring all of them stabilizing muscles into play as well. As you get more muscle and strength, just do more demanding exercises and/or use the weight vest for added weight. And you can use a rubber band to lighten up the ring exercises. If you can do the crucifix, are you gona tell me you ain't got a great upper body? All manner of dynamic plyometric jumps for the lower body. Next would be olympic bar and bumper plates, but they are expensive as hell and you need a whole lot of room to train with them... and a sturdy floor. Next is power rack and safety straps.

I love the concept 2 rower, I don't have the space for it however, rather than bumper plates and oly bars, over the years I've purchased 7 ft and 5 ft standard bars and standard plates. Point to be made; Personalise it to your own situation.

I almost completely agree with Jacko. Rings are definitely 1st. Squat rack is 2nd. Not sure if I'd recommend kettlebells over adjustable dumbbells though. Almost anything you can do with a kettlebell, you can do with a dumbbell and so much more, and the Concept 2 Rower is brutal. Forget torture and waterboarding, all you need is a Concept 2 Rower.

Anyone else here after all the gyms closed in their state due to coronavirus?

This series is fantastic Coop I absolutely agree with the rings. I have had an iron gym doorway pullup bar since 2008, it is great, fantastic. I recently got rings and so much better. I may sell the bar and just use rings for anything bodyweight, with two ceiling anchors for the rings. First night I got them I did dips on them. I did incline and decline pushups on them last night and used the 41" loop style (flat) resistance bands for progressive overload. My apartment gym will be consisting of rings, ceiling anchors for the rings. Loop style resistance bands and a door anchor for now. Then a set of three wall anchors later on. Then after that, a bench.

Kettlebells, but no dumbbells?
@GarageGymReviews7 жыл бұрын
Many dumbbell movements can be done with kettlebells.
@evelynn42737 жыл бұрын
I find dumbbells more versatile (and less expensive) than kettlebells.
@pac60106 жыл бұрын
Kettle bells are better suited for building strength with athletic movements. You use them in a way that builds strength in the muscles that power motions. Dumbbells are for simply building core arm strength. And yes both can cross over into each others world, but neither is really better suited for the others purpose. IMO I do think that kettle bells are a little more versatile though because you can use them like a dumbbell more than you can use a dumbbell like a kettle bell. But to each their own. Use what works best for you and the kind of workouts you do.
@jeffcummins14086 жыл бұрын
I think I'd disagree, only because kettlebells combine functional strength development and cardio, whereas dumbbells seem to focus more on functional movement, not so much on cardio. It's the difference between continuous swings and reps. They're both very versatile and useful, though.
@craig3286 жыл бұрын
Which "heavy compound movement" can you do with kettlebells that can't be done with dumbells? Because, for my money, I go with a variable weight dumbbell kit and an adjustable bench and I've covered most of the essentials. Because the core three heavy compound lifts are deadlifts, bench press and squats. I'm happy to admit that I'd find squatting with dumbbells to be out of the question but you can deadlift dumbells and kettlebells both (I suppose) and, personally, dumbbell bench press versus a barbell bench is better because it ensures symmetry between the sides. Can't have one side compensating for weakness on the other. But do tell...which "heavy compound movements" did you have in mind?

Miguel 666 you should know that butterfly pull-ups are not for muscle hypertrophy but used for cardio and endurance. And they destroy you. The same could be said for rowing on a rower. Not for strength like barbell rows but for cardio purposes. Or rowing is cheating as well? Lol. Study first pls.

1. Gym rings (hang them from the ceiling) 2. Kettlebells - 2 (one very heavy for low reps, one medium weight for ballistic training and high reps) 3. Resistance bands - A good set of 4 resistance bands, with handles and carabiners 4. Olympic bar - with weights for 1 RM 5. Power rack 6. Punching bag That should be enough

Yeah, Jocko is a bigtime Crossfitter? Bumper plates are necessary when you want to do stuff like cleans, snatches or anything that requires you to drop the bar. I guess if you spend all your gym time doing skull crushers and worrying if your mirror is big enough you won't need them. Bumper plates have been around much longer than Crossfit. They just use them because they work for what they want to do.
