59 year old, started 2 months ago at a Relson academy. I am overweight and the oldest guy there. The first month I felt badly beat up, my knees ached, it took a full day in between to recover…but I LOVE IT ! After 2 months, my knees are fine with proper stretching and my recovery time keeps getting shorter. I hope to be a good training partner, get some great exercise, make some wonderful friends, and be a learning sponge. Get my black belt by 70 ?….who knows, but what a great journey !

Around 2006, during a class taught by Rickson, he stopped and said “we no gonna train today, we gonna praktix our breath.” And so, that’s all we did, the point being to “stay calm and don’t panic when a guy 50 pounds heavier trying to choke you. There’s a way out, no panic…and I don’t mean that jus for the mat, I mean that for life.” Words from Rickson that solidified his place in my life as a mentor, helping me in my marriage, fatherhood, career, and of course Jiu Jitsu.

I train Kenjutsu (actually the style funded by Miyamoto Musashi Sensei) in Brazil for 20 years now (at Niten Institute, Jorge Kishikawa Sensei). It's very different from Jiu-Jitsu but I can relate with all Mr. Gracie is talking about. In a intuitive way, it is pure Bushido. Like when he's talking about never running up his brother Rolls in tournaments or when he talks about always putting yourself in the hardest position. A true warrior master.

“Japan lost their soul when they lost the war, they lost the attitude of the samurai… they became more like servants in complying with the energy of the rest of the universe” I’ve never heard someone put it like that. A very honest and unique perspective that can also be a metaphor for life. When we’re young we’re full of passion and hope and energy but as we become more accustom to failure and tribulations, we lose sight of the person we once were. We’d much rather try to fit in rather than stand out and push the needle in a different direction because our confidence over the years has waned from feeling like we failed to accomplish the mission we initially set out to do.

In the late 90s when I first got into Jiu-Jitsu, a friend gave me his copy of the Rickson documentary called "Choke" to watch. Needless to say, he greatly influenced my own Jiu-Jitsu journey to this day. I like that his book is called "Breathe", a contrast to "Choke"! Rickson is a legit warrior in every way (as is Jocko). This was a great podcast. Oss!!

WOW, didn't even see the cool duality of Breathe vs Choke. Very cool. Four years in myself, lucky you! Got to start in the 90s =)

Got to be one of the best podcasts ever. I love how animated Jocko and Echo were during the supporch section at the end (almost deserves a longer "breakdown" podcast of its own). So much henergy lol.

Just bought 2 books. One for myself and one for my wife. I travel a lot so we can’t share. We both listen to the Jocko podcast and we’re wanting to get our daughter and ourselves into Jiu Jitsu. Turns out there is a Gracie academy close to us. Can’t wait to get started!!!

This was absolutely one of the most interesting and informative podcasts that I myself have ever seen. The natural flow of the conversation, the genuine interest, admiration, and respect for Ju-Jitsu. The knowledge that is shared in this podcast alone, contains a deeper wisdom, a deeper respect, a different live for life. I have recently just now come to realize that masters of martial arts weren't only just great fighters, some were enlightened as well. Can't wait to get this book "Breathe" Thank you, respect.🙏

Hands down one of the best interviews I have ever listened to. Just so much information to unpack, reflect, and apply. Adding an update. After listening. I adjusted my jujitsu breathing technique and mindset to prep before tournaments. I just finished a tournament with an 8 man bracket… I got gold, all submissions. The breathing and meditation really helped elevate my game and control my HR and vision. As they elevated, I was able to capitalize.

PLEASE, have him on your show again to talk about “invisible Jiu Jitsu”.
@prandz4203 жыл бұрын
there is no invisible jiu jitsu. There are only skills and small adjustments to your position that you dont have enough experience to see or verbalise yet.

@garethllewellyn2153 жыл бұрын
@@prandz420 uh...hes talking about subtle angles, movements, ways to change pressure...slight adjustments etc that's not possible to see or be shown.....its the application and accuracy of the performance of the technique thats is superior...for example...Rickson and jocko both do the same choke on the same person....to the eyes...both "appear " to be doing the same thing but why is Ricksons submittion far superior 🤔 its because of the lifetime of perfecting each and every tiny detail of the choke ...things you can not see ...only be learned by being explained to in depth while finding out for yourself...the way he feels superior when he's in Mount or side control is because of the nuances of his application of techniques and there's a reason everyone says he's the best
@prandz4203 жыл бұрын
Yuri Teixeira Mendes yes I do I’ve been training bjj for over a decade. Invisible jiu jitsu doesn’t exist. It’s just a skill level you haven’t reached and the instructor cannot verbalise. Rickson himself can’t explain these subtle details so he just calls it invisible jiu jitsu. There is no magic here.
@prandz4203 жыл бұрын
Gareth Llewellyn yep that’s pretty much what I said lol. Nothing invisible about it. It just seems invisible to people like you who haven’t trained much. Nothing magic or invisible about it you just have to train more and pick up the details over many years.

We see how quickly Echo uplands this episode! No biases with this guest
I was feeling kind of in a slump with practicing my jiu jitsu. This podcast has sparked me up again. Rickson is an amazing soul and I feel God is with him at all times. I haven't mastered my emotions yet and I need people like Rickson to remind me to never fear the failures that comes with life, because life is not about failures, it is about how we progress and never give up when the failures do come. Thank you, Jocko, Rickson and Echo.

WOW!!! Speechless. Not just because I'm in awe but also because Rickson is speaking and when the master speaks I better listen. Gonna go back and watch "Choke" for the millionth time. Awesome doc about Rickson and his Vale Tudo fights in Japan. If you've never seen it I fully recommend. It's here on KZbin.

This podcast should be a prerequisite for anyone starting BJJ. Hearing these gentleman speak is like opening up a treasure chest filled with deep insight. BJJ begins on the mat but the preparation and lessons continue throughout our entire lives. Life, death, acceptance, persistence, adaptability, the warrior mind-set. Whether you’re starting the journey, an expert player or just returning to the mat like myself-the privilege to hear this conversation is an absolute gift.

Fantastic. This approach to being feels transformative and is immediately useful. The terrific excerpt from the introduction sets a perfect start to this story about a truly inspirational teacher. Having had the privilege to read all of Peter Maguire's books I truly look forward to reading this one. Discipline and commitment to his vocation as a historian and writer as well as being someone who leads his live with courage made him the ideal choice help bring the story of Rickson Gracie's life and philosophy to the world. This is going to be one of those books that frays at the edges from continuous rereading. This was 3 hours well spent. Cheers.
