After his debacle in the TV debate against challenger Donald Trump, the campaign team of 81-year-old US President Joe Biden is working on putting a different spin on the debate about his advanced age. "I know" is the title of a new campaign ad for the Democrat. In it, a combative Biden can be seen at a campaign event in the state of North Carolina shortly after the botched duel, where he recalls the time in office of the Republican ex-President Trump.
"I know I'm not a young man," Biden said to a cheering crowd. "But I know how to do this job. I know what is right and what is wrong. I know how to tell the truth. I know like millions of Americans: If you fall down, you get back up again." Biden's appearance in the first TV debate last Thursday sparked a debate in the USA about whether he should make room for a younger candidate. So far, however, the Democrat and the front row of his party have defied calls for his resignation - they are trying to limit the damage. His family - especially his wife Jill - are also demonstratively supporting the president.
According to the campaign team, the spot is intended to reach voters who live in particularly hotly contested states.
Like his predecessor Trump, Biden is hoping to win the presidential election in November. So far, much has pointed to a close race. There have long been doubts about Biden's suitability due to his advanced age. While the Democrats had hoped that the incumbent would show how fit he still was in the debate, exactly the opposite happened: Biden spoke quietly and unclearly in front of an audience of millions, stumbling over his words several times or even losing his thread completely.
