Doesn’t sit right with me that people call Roy’s technique bad. Just because he was unconventional with his guard doesn’t mean he didn’t understand the fundamentals of angles, head positioning, footwork, etc. He deteriorated too rapidly to adjust like b-hop did.

Roy actually was skilled a lot of people don’t notice that... when he went down in weight and was older he just didn’t have his legs anymore and if anyone actually pays attention to what roy is doing you will see his main form of defense was his feet his movement but once he lost that he was a sitting duck... roy in his prime knew how to maneuver the ring well and escape which is a skill and also knew how to throw beautiful combinations and knew how to be patient and went to the body and knew how to smother his opponent with his body sometimes after landing a shot, he knew how to throw soft pitty patt punches to set up the big ones and understood the importance of feinting very well.... don’t let people fool you just because he threw wild shots and didn’t jab he was actually great technically In certain areas and it was that combined with the fact that he had unbelievable power and speed that made him almost unbeatable.

When you KNOW the fundamentals . YOU CAN BREAK THEM
@perealty51055 жыл бұрын
that RJJ wasn't technical is crap. He was one of the greatest amateurs in US history. He used fundamentals as a base for his unorthodox style - just because those incorporated his natural speed, and then showcased his power, doesn't mean unothordox = technically bad. There have been a ton of super fast/quick guys, and a ton of unorthodox styles....but Roy put it all together so far past anyone else before or after, because he had great technical ability to start.
@b.romero68465 жыл бұрын
He was athletically gifted, he never adjusted once he lost that
@perealty51055 жыл бұрын
He went basically 50-0 and all the way from jr. middleweight to winning the heavyweight championship. His decline wasn't at an age that is at all rare for guys to decline, there isn't really anything to adjust. He had a couple other high points, but from about 1991 until about 2004, there wasn't anyone even in the same universe as him. There are guys who were very fast, very quick, hit with huge power, all that...he put it together with a great technical background and base, he wasn't winging crazy shots, or getting lucky anticipating where the other guys punches were coming from....if he was "bad" technically, he was in with guys who were excellent technicians who could have broke him down, or at least made it tough....he didn't lose 5 full mins to a prime James Toney and Bernard Hopkins combined.
@b.romero68465 жыл бұрын
@@perealty5105 he beat plenty of cans during his P4P run including a journeymen heavyweight John Ruiz who happened to a belt and was no way shape or form the man to beat in that division. Roy was athletic once he lost that he was getting KO'ed left and right. He never adjusted after that,fighters with technical ability and great defense don't get ko'ed the way he does
@perealty51055 жыл бұрын
If you just watched in a vacuum you could have said Hopkins was a bum based on how easy Roy made it look. Reggie Johnson, Hill, McCallum (who wasn't like 2 years removed from basically fighting James Toney even 2x), Malinga (who beat Nigel Benn), Lou Del Vall... he beat plenty of very guys easy enough that its clear how great he was. And Ruiz was coming off wins against Holyfield, and still hadn't beat Rahman - Roy wasnt' going down as the greatest heavyweight in history, but its pretty much splitting hairs at that point to try and critique who he beat, doing something for the first time in like 160 years. If all it took to be named the fighter of the decade was to be athletic, I think it would have looked more competitive. He started declining around 35, that's when boxers start to make sharper declines. Look at Ray Leonard, Ali, Hagler, Hearns, Whitaker - nobody says Carl Lewis wasn't fast just because he wouldn't win the Olympics now. At his best, he was arguably the most dominant champion in modern history.
@b.romero68465 жыл бұрын
@@perealty5105 none of those those fighters u mentioned on the decline were brutally knocked out the way Jones was, Floyd was a technical defensive specialist would have never gone down like that, same for Whitaker. Ruiz beat an over the hill Holyfield, The bodysnatcher best years were in the 80s at 154. When u really break down his resume u can be only mention Bhop who got better with age and Toney. Nigel Benn claim to fame was the McClellan fight

Roy was not not over 200 lbs for the Ruiz fight. Cutting to 175 was not a significant cut. IMO Roy's downfall was a combination of things personal and physical. Roy def had legit technique too... and definitely used jabs. What's stunning is that Roy started fighting at junior welterweight and ended up becoming a heavyweight champion.
@sliccric22665 жыл бұрын
Roy weighed 193 for the Ruiz fight. Paz is right, roy beat guys with pure speed and agility, a bit like a prime ali. As soon as those traits dimished a bit, he started getting k.o'd because he never really had the fundamentals to fall back on. Regardless, still one of the all time greats.
@davidmcconnell50463 жыл бұрын
I appreciate non boxing people taking an interest, but know your facts. Jones weighed 194 lbs vs Ruiz had to shed 19 lbs not 30 lbs for Tarver. He fought a peak Tarver. Jones also came on strong in rounds 10-12. If his non dominant performance was due to weight loss he would’ve been strong early and tired late.

Oh man, I'm so glad to hear someone else complain about Roy Jones fundamentals sucking. I used to yell at the screen watching him fight. I just hate to see someone with true matrix like reflexes and sloppy habits. Sooner or later holding your left hand low is gonna get ya speed racer. Anderson Silva used to dodge bullets in the ring and look what holding your hands low and backing straight up did for him. Weidman was no striking legend, what's he done since????. Nope Silva just did some annoying show boat crap and got caught out by the laws of physics. It's even more annoying in Silva because he damn well knows better. Speeds the first thing to go and the first thing to teach you bad habits. The funniest thing I've seen lately on this subject was Darren Till getting cracked by Woodley. Till holds his left down at his waist and he throws weird, winging uppercuts while he is doing it. He got away with it because he's fast and he can really crack. As soon as he got in with someone good who had watched some film on him.......he got dumped on his ass. I bet Cerrone would beat him in re match.
