Some are just brainwashed I get it. Although I'm sure there is some merit to what the friends said. Maybe the stuff she covered is important. Maybe. But when I'm listening to comedy I want jokes not a moral lecture or lessons. Even bill Burr sometimes gives his thoughts but it's done in a funny way where he knows he sounds like the ahole. Still though, I don't like getting preached to and many modern young comedians don't preach. She tells people what the jokes will be about before she tells them. She makes it about herself and how she gets hate and brings up her autism card all the time. I suggest you maybe watch Think Before you Sleep's video on why she's not funny but if you think she's funny then there's no point watching as then she has some merit. But people didn't say she was funny, they said it was "important". And that says it all. You agree because you feel important listening to it. Btw it's not the subject matter, the inherent way she tells jokes isn't funny. But I'd love to hear your perspective.

@@ricardocantoral7672 Carlin was allowed to be preachy and depressing. He had already experienced the deep pain of loss, he saw the world turning to shit, saw popular media turning against him, and didn't have much else to live for. He had reached critical mass and realized that he had a voice and a willing audience, so he simply decided to let out all of his resentment and disappointment in the world; in doing so I earnestly believe achieved a bit of peace before he passed on. In those bitter years, he wasn't really a comedian (I don't think he considered his material "comedy" in the traditional sense), he was a social critic with an unobscured agenda. His late attitude reminds me of Miyazaki's, another vocal and influential figure in his twilight years. I just made it through like 15 minutes of her material and I’m really not trying to hate on her for using her identity as a lesbian as a crutch or endless going out of her way to repeat nauseatingly played out tropes about how men are predatory by nature; what I really didn’t understand about her comedy is the lack of actual jokes. I don’t disagree with Rogan about there being comedy that comes in different forms, appealing to various individuals. However, even with comics I don’t find particularly funny, I can still understand where the humor lies and why people in the audience start laughing. With Hannah (and maybe I watched a bad few clips), I was genuinely confused at the times the audience burst into laughter when she didn’t have a point, observation or punchline. She was literally just saying that she’s a lesbian endlessly, followed by some self deprecating remarks that came off more like her getting stuff off her chest to a therapist than a comic entertaining a full house. She had a 5 minute long story about walking her dog at the dog park where she was approached by a man interested in speaking with her not knowing her sexual preference. The audience starts bursting with laughter at this completely commonplace human interaction where nothing happened. Then she slays with the punchline no one was expecting; could you believe when she spotted his dog, the dog was dressed in dog shoes?! Heads are exploding in the crowd, knee slapping abound, tears are flowing, bellies aching from the gut busting humor of Hannah Gadsby. The worst part of it was she jacked the bit from Sacha Baron Cohen who used the joke ironically when conducting an interview with an etiquette coach during one his Borat interviews with a vanilla Midwestern conservative.
@JNJ10143 жыл бұрын
You described my feelings EXACTLY. I didn't understand what I was watching when I realized her formula was basically (tell a story illustrating the utter banality of my life) + (add in some truly pedestrian observational humor) + (Add a self-deprecating comment about your physical unattractiveness then remind us of your sexuality & the cross you're forced to bear each day as a result) Like her comment about how "non-binary people say "That a difficult day for you now was it?" Or claiming the guy at the dog park told her to smile? Like I get it, 99.9% of jokes are utter fabrications, made up simply to get people to laugh. But for the story to be funny, the story must be SOMEWHAT plausible, esp. if you're referencing an everyday event like going to get coffee or buying groceries. Like nobody believes a super overweight lesbian, who dresses like a guy, is getting cold approached by a man who then proceeds to tell said RANDOM WOMAN her face is a problem bc she's not smiling. It's just implausible, stupid & cringe like the entire special. It's not comedy, it's not social commentary, it's her recycling tired lesbian/trans/non-binary/weirdo themes about how straight men are super exclusionary & their lives are extremely tough bc "we look like this" ("ha, that's funny" is how I bet 95% of the audience was actually feeling)

How is everyone missing exactly the point of what he is saying - there are different forms of comedy just like there are of music. Some people don't like Hannah Gadsby's type of comedy, that doesn't mean she is objectively unfunny, some people do like her comedy, that doesn't mean she is objectively funny either.

Hmmm, it's complicated, and you maybe have right but objectibly speaking the special is not funny, even in the part when hannna not talk about is tragedy, the "light" jokes don't work so much, a couples of laughters but almost the entire special was the crowd aplauding her, thats not a good respond for a comedy show.

True laughter is involuntary. If you find something funny you will laugh regardless of your orientation, beliefs or background.

Rogan sayin’ “it’s hard out there for a pimp” for ma girl was so funny The Machine laughed and you should too. Despite any differing opinions, funny is funny and a Patrice O’Neal would slap a bitch if she had a differing opinion…metaphorically, of course.

The thing I hated the most about Carlin, and I’ve watched all his specials, is the applauding audience. So much self satisfaction it was hard to bear. And I agreed with most of his points. (Perhaps it’s just being from a rather cold culture from a different part of the world)
@jordil61523 жыл бұрын
Carlin was hilarious, but he stretched himself out too thin in the 80’s-90’s. But I gather that had something to do with back taxes and debt. Those last 3 specials tho cracked me up. I also think Bill Cosby was funny but it was prop comedy was a bit too edgy for most people.

Doug Stanhope isn't like any other comedian. He must've spent years building his own audience considering the kind of comedy he does.

I would consider myself a Stanhope fan, but I like tons of other comedians. I'm not going to drive to Bisby, AZ to worship at the shrine any time soon though. But I like his style.
