Even as someone who isn't an SUV fan in general, I've gotta say the X5 is a brilliant all rounder. New diesels, which are now much cleaner, still make a lot of sense for people who regularly drive longer distances. Great vid as always, Joe.

The X5 offers enormous driving pleasure, in a smooth and powerful way, comfort and security. Until 2027 I am allowed to enter the low emission zone, Brussels ... .

I rented a pre-facelift 30d in Germany last summer and was gobsmacked. Being a rental it was in base wheels, base suspension and standard seats but it was SO good. I have a 2014 Cayenne Diesel and even though this was the 30d and not the 40d, man it just blew my Cayenne’s engine away. We drove the car about 1000 km over southern and western Germany and it was absolutely stellar fully loaded with people and bags. Capable stable, good tech. I loved it. It was soooo smooth. I don’t have any trouble with your claim.

Purchased an X5 50e back in November and this is the most versatile vehicle I have ever owned. Went from an M8 and prior to that a G80 M3 and a base Cayenne coupe and this suv still blows me away as to everything it can do. Went the entire month of January without spending a dollar at the pump. It has power to spare no matter what mode you’re in.

I can easily imagine this must be amazing. Had a rental X5 30d for a week last year. By far the best daily I’ve ever tried. Amazing engine (quiet, efficient, quick enough), great interior and unbelievable comfort (small wheels on winter tyres helped !). Could t believe how great it was, didn’t want to give it back 😅

I’ve got a 2016 520d with 90k miles on the clock, still running an absolute dream after 5y of ownership… no intention to change car any time soon, until I saw one of these in tanzanite blue in the BMW showroom the other day. Way out of my price range with a £100k sticker, when my car gives up hopefully I can grab one of these used for half the money.

The mrs has this car with most of the options that press car has but in the US it’s the 40i with the b58. No diesels here. She’s only done around 7k miles but it’s a fantastic all rounder as you say. She adores it and much better than her previous GLE.

Could not agree more. Even the base model with steel springs, the ride quality and cornering ability is stunningly good. The build quality and feeling of rigidity is better than any car I've ever driven. Even when I shut my door after getting in, I can't believe how good it feels. I've had the refreshed model since October and sticker price was $71,500 in the U.S., so nearly the base model. I've got heated seats and convenience pack. Gas version with the B58 motor and it's just such a superb package all the way round. I look forward to every drive.

Totally agree your review Joe! We have the X5 50E hybrid which we find absolutely superb, and overall, we get around 60 to 70 mpg in a mix of electric driving for shorter runs (electric range a real 55 approx miles) or petrol on longer trips. Brilliant car and like you can’t fault it. Oh, and foot to floor off the line with petrol and electric engaged, 0 - 62 in around 4.7 secs!

Hi Joe. I fully agree with you. I have a 2022 G05 m sport 30d. It does everything it says on the tin and more. You’re right up there on mpg and on one run my average was the top end of the forties. Towing is soo effortless. And still around 22 mpg. Can’t fault it. I have the 22” wheels on and the air suspension makes it. Thank you for having the same frame of mind. Brilliant review! As a previous owner of a 330d F30 and X5 40d from 2016.. I totally get what you’re saying about the marriage of gearbox and engine.. I’ve mentioned it numerous times to other people that the car always finds itself in the right gear, no matter the situation. Much better than Porsche’s PDK, which often finds itself shifting far too quickly, thus leaving you outside the optimum torque band for effortless overtakes or cruising. Really glad you picked up on that tangible fact and conveyed it!

I just came out of a 21 X5 40i and i loved it, overall was very happy. Currently have the i5 M60 and i was worried it wont fill in the shoes of happiness. And it did. The smile this car gives u driving Daily is insane. I skip the x5 because i felt like not much changed from LCI. Both cars are great.

Having a 3 year old M50d loaded to a similar spec I paid around £80k at that time - 26,000miles later it is simply the best car I have ever owned and the intention is to refinance the car at the end of the term as to replace it will cost me north of £100k which is crazy! Agree with all your comments about how versatile the car is and it really is a Swiss Army knife!

I'm in the same situation. I'll be keeping this car when my term is up. There's nothing close to it out there and probably won't be anytime soon. Unless it's a new Beemer that is. Never going electric BTW.

Fantastic car colleague has the exact car and get gets 44 mpg on a run 38 round town ish. I have had 6 X5’s last ones we’re all fantastic M50D , M50i and just picked my M60i . And not one has ever broken down so far🤞 insurance less than a grand too

Yes! I've been waiting for someone to review the LCI 30d. I've just picked mine up 3 weeks ago and have been dying to know the real 0-100km. 5.6s is insane. I have the 22inch wheels on adaptive M suspensions and was amazed at how comfortable it was on rubbish Sydney roads. The suspension lets you know what is going on with the road, but still more than comfortable enough without a harsh edge to it like my previous Mercedes. I've just done a 500km road trip and it was effortless. It was around 7L/100km during the whole trip (With city and highway driving). The autonomous hands free driving was so easy to use, and it ate the miles and I didn't feel tired at the end of each drive. I went up a steep muddy/rocky farm road and was shocked it made it up there on summer continental tires without losing traction. The only complaints I have are not having the ability to switch off start stop. Especially when the engine is cold in the morning, I find myself switching between sport mode at every stop to keep the engine on, and switching back to comfort so the rev's aren't too high as I'm still running the engine in. Also, the front middle air condition vents are somewhat blocked by the design, and airflow isn't that great. And the fan speed and noise for level 2 are way higher than the lowest airflow setting so I find myself turning it back to level 1 due to the noise. I quickly got accustomed to the HVAC controls and are easy to use but I still wish there was a dedicated air recirculation button when I'm entering a tunnel (It's 3 buttons deep to turn it on!!). I test drove the 40i and was impressed with how smooth/quiet and torquey it was. But with the prices of 98 petrol and the high revving nature of petrols, I couldn't help but to feel like it was bleeding money while driving it. The nature of diesel how torquey and low revving it is, and cost of fuel, range, while still being sporty when I need it to be made it a winner for me. Overall, the refinement of the cabin and driving is above GLE and Q7/8. I even prefer the cabin's fit n finish to a highly optioned Cayenne as there are still many elements of creaky plastic in the Cayenne. Sensafin is leagues above the vegan leathers of the competitors. As Harry's Garage has mentioned, this car feels like it's in Bentley Bentayga territory in terms of refinement. Very very happy with the X5.

I have 2023 M Sportpack X5 with B57. I generally do not like SUVs (before I had Audi A6) and this is my first one, but as I have 3 kids, need more space in the cabin and we had a great deal from the local dealer on the X5s last year (60k EUR for base X5 3,0d and with M Sportpack around 68k EUR), but after 2-3 months I started to appreciate this car. P.S. You dad is exact copy of you (or vice versa) - just 20+ years older :)

Really happy with this review 😀 I have been saying this since i first drove the G05 (pre-lci), and it doesnt really matter what engine you have in it, it is (and has been since it came out) the best car you can buy at bmw. i was especially blown away with the air suspension like you were, how they managed to set it up like it is is beyond me.. i had to check what wheels are on the car (21" and even drove one with 22") and was expecting 19" at most with that ride quality. its just epic all in one package

Got my pre face lift X5 30d new in 2019, very similar spec but no frozen paint, £76k list and I got 12% discount! Was going to change it after 4 years but it's still solid as a rock (and the huge price increase on a new like for like) decided to run it forever. 80k miles now and still perfect. Love it

Just bought this car and after a 600 mile round trip the day after I picked it up I think it's the best car I have ever owned. It's my fourth BMW and I have also had a Disco. The design, build quality, tech and luxury feel are fantastic, but the engine and drive is awesome. I can't believe I averaged 41.5mpg over 600 miles driving 70% motorway and 30% a/b roads. Absolutely love it.

Amazing review @JoeAchilles. I just got a 2021 X6 30d M Sport (which is actually the same car with more aggressive coupe looks) specd with extended merino Tartufo leather, panoramic sky lounge sunroof, 21"s, M Sport brakes, M Sports exhaust, M adaptive suspension, and many more extras. The B57 is a torque monster and at the same time so refined and quiet engine. The ZF8 is simply perfect and everyday I am more sure that I made the best option.

I think it would be great to hear your thoughts on some of the older second-hand BMWs like the E6X 5 series, the E9X 3 series, the F15 X5 etc., where the cost of everything is going up and a lot of us like to shop around for a second-hand bargain!

Great review. I have a 2019 with the air suspension and I love it. I've found on previous BMWs that the ride quality on poor roads started to wear on me, but this X5 with the air suspension just handles everything with ease. It's hard to find a major fault with this car....that is until you need to replace the brakes or tires $$$

i have now same engine 2021 g31 and i love it. Yesterday i had 300km trip and i used 13,4l diesel. 210kw on 2,2tons 5-series is impressive. My next car is same x5. New 5series is not my first choice any more.

I've recently bought an x3 30d and I can't really fault it. Pano roof is seriously good and harmon kardon sound system is great too. Couldn't find any second hand with adaptive cruise or adaptive suspension both of which would have been nice. Think will get this x5 in a couple of years time with the 30d

I just gave back my x5 45e. Absolutely the best car I ever had. Saying that though, the current pricing of BMW’s meant I couldn’t justify replacing with them. Going to wait a while and see if they come down as I can’t see many people or businesses paying the 1300 a month they wanted haha

I’ve had numerous BMW Touring models and loved them all. Due to kids and dog, I recently took the leap into an X5 30d (despite my reservations towards SUVs). It is 2020 model so doesn’t have the MHT but I am blown away by the car so far. It is a brilliant all rounder

Great review, great car. Joe, I know you’re a huge bmw fan. The great thing about the M3 is it ticks the practical box so well as well as the fun side of things. I’m sure budgetary constraints and I’m guessing there’s also the fact that with the m3 covering both fun and practical so well, do you see a place for one of these in your garage? I’m guessing as you’ve just updated the m3 wagon, possibly not?

I’ve had an X5 45e for 15 months or so, and done nearly 20K miles in it. Fabulous car. I don’t think the 50e needs yet another 100bhp, though, and I don’t like the interior changes because more buttons means it’s easier to adjust things like heating on the move etc, therefore more safety. So I’ll only upgrade when I have to. Tax means it has to be a hybrid.

Excellent work as usual Joe and you make a hugely compelling argument for this car. In reality, regardless of what car we drive, we are all pretty much going at the same speed, so why not do it in something with enough pace to surprise and enough comfort to be able to get out and walk away from it without making all those awful "Dad" noises muttering about back pain and your hips being made of dust (just me then?).

Other question: my daily is the iX3 G08 and all I can say it’s the best Allrounder from BMW (I ever had). Currently there are a lot incentives on it, imho, it’s a bargin on bmws current EV lineup. I am thinking of buying a 2023 530d m sport sedan and this great review has confirmed my own observations that BMW has improved the series to well near perfect. While my heart was set on an i4 e35 was a disappointment to drive with non existent steering feel. The 530d had totally superior build and road dynamics. While not directly comparable to the x5 you reviewed the 539d m sport impressed me as the best car I’ve ever driven with no issues. And pricing on the 530d is much better…….. As always great review and pleasing to see the 30d motor and zf transmission scoring a solid 10.

@@hassyg4083 not really. All depends upon affordability. Between PCP payment, fuel, maintenance and usual insurance and tax worked out monthly, works out to be 1350 a month. Each to their own but that doesn’t bother be as I’ didn’t have the 85k to buy it brand new. Who does 🤔

Fantastic video as always Joe and the ride really is fantastic in these. Unpopular opinion, but I really don’t get the hype around diesel - I get that they have good torque and MPG, but I think they are just such soulless engines; also I know they are much cleaner now, but I still can’t help but think about all the extra nasty particulates that they (at least historically) kick out. I know it’s a bit more money, but for me it would have to be a 50e M Sport if I was getting a non-full fat M car. Better MPG, more refined, more power - I was so so impressed by the 45e I had for a week not too long ago and think they are just such a compelling package.

I own a 13plate X3 sport 3litre Diesel with 130,000 miles on the clock,it’s without doubt the best car I have ever owned,the power from the engine is unbelievable and sport and sport plus mode turns it into something else,my daughter has a Range Rover Velar with the V6 twin turbo Diesel engine and it can’t live with my X3 in sport plus,my only criticism is it hasn’t got the air suspension which makes the ride a bit firm but other than that it’s brilliant,the fuel consumption around town is about 36mpg but on the motorway at a steady 70mph it’s unbelievable giving around 48/50 mpg. I keep thinking about changing it but cannot bring myself to do it because every time I use it,it seems to drive better the more miles I do in it,my son changes the oil twice a year,every spring and every autumn with 0w40 fully synthetic for the winter,the filter he changes annually,in the spring oil change I use 10w40,BMW recommend 5w30 all year round with the long life oil but being an ex diesel mechanic I prefer to use this combination using cheaper oils of the correct specification which seems to have work well this far,always use fully synthetic though. Regular oil changes are the secret to longevity in Diesel engines and oil is cheap when compared to major component failures, I always let it run on a fast idle when starting in freezing conditions and again before shutting it down to protect the turbo bearings,I never use the stop start function for the same reasons,the money you save on fuel comes nowhere near the price of a turbo plus fitting and VAT.

I've got a G01 2018 X3 30d and even my version of the engine (261bhp/620nm) is such a peach. I hardly use the throttle to accelerate and leave it in comfort mode and D most of the time. It just goes when you need it. Stick it in Sport+ and Sport drive... and hang on! This new X5 looks very impressive with the latest 30d engine, but buying a new one is… ouch! …with those options. I still would though if I could.

I drive the X3 30e which I leased just over two years ago. It is astonishingly fast in acceleration, with or without Xtraboost. I did however want this X5 diesel, and the only reason I didn‘t take it is because the German government had a 3700 € subsidy for hybrids at the time, and there is a tax reduction for company cars from the normal 1% of the new price for conventional combustion engines to 0.50% for hybrids, 0.25% for full electric. I’ve always wanted that X5, just wasn’t prepared to pay the government so much tax. I’m English but have been living in Germany since the 90s. The tax laws here are crazy! Even if you buy a used vehicle and bring it onto your company‘s books, the government still charges tax on that vehicles new price.

Here in Holland I would 100% opt for the 50e which is €15k less expensive then the 40i and €23k less expensive then the 30d

in ireland the diesel is 40,000 euro more expensive than an equal spec hybrid X5... thanks to the emissions figures and our stupid government VRT Tax... i have a 530d touring. absolutely love it. will be driving it for another while i think. great video joe..

Must agree with your conclusion, it makes absolutely no sense whatever to push your money to a brand new technology complete with lots of problem with a new car over a well proven brilliant package. Saw some of your instagram messages with what these electric cars are loosing in 4 months of ownership.....might as well burn your 💰💰💰....i understand the technical aspects of electricity im a qualified electrician and at the moment Electric cars is not the way to go its all hype.

I’ve got one and despite reference to BMW Munich (six months ago), I still await resolution to reflections from the dash fascia on to the front driver/passenger windows which seriously compromise rear vision on door mirrors.

Also, you’re missing quite a few packages. Such as the Bowers and Wilkins audio system, rear wheel steering with anti roll bar, tow bar
