I had a 2019 X5 40i and now have a 2023 X7 M60i. Looked at the Cayenne both times but just could not understand why it cost 40-50k more outside of having to pay the Porsche tax. Finally good to see a review that actually tackles that ridiculous delta instead of pretending both cars are equally priced.
@cbatiau25288 ай бұрын
The Porsche tax is worth it to many people because of (a) how you can customize it to your liking a la carte, and (b) the superior design of driver controls and screens … As a veteran Porsche owner, I can say that it’s possible to spend close to base MSRP and get a fabulous vehicle without loading up on crazy options; for me that happily means all-metal roof, smallest wheels, no “premium” packages, no additional expensive interior options having to do with leather or carbon fiber, etc.
@samsharma92078 ай бұрын
@@cbatiau2528 I think the argument makes more sense for the 911, but it doesn't hold true as much for the Cayenne. How many Cayenne owners are going down the PTS and Manufactur route with their vehicles? Anecdotal, but I barely see any Cayennes with specialty paint or bespoke options in the way I see 911s with them. In either case, more people skip the tax as the X5 outsells the Cayenne by almost double (and there are plenty of Cayenne allocations unlike the 911).
@cbatiau25288 ай бұрын
@@samsharma9207 I doubt that the X5 outsells the Cayenne if the prices are the same. And, actually, E-Hybrid Cayenne allocations are rather sparse right now; the 2024 version appears to be quite popular. Dealerships tend to do the same-old thing with all their cars -- get pano roofs (most people I know don't care for them and/or don't even want them), get large wheels (reduces safety and range and comfort), and put in premium packages with stuff that most people don't need (and often won't even use). In the GLE 450e, I can't get ACC without ordering a huge package of stuff that I don't want/need and spend a bunch of cash for that unneeded/unwanted stuff. When you special-order your own Porsche, you can trim out so much excess and get what you want -- and, for sure, people with huge amounts of disposable income will max out their specially-optioned cars with very unnecessary stuff. But there's a lot of good stuff that you can option in Cayennes that you simple cannot option in an X5 or a GLE, like heated windshield, infrared camera, compass/clock on dashboard, all-metal roof, and (in Taycan) electrochromic glass roofs. I also feel much safer in a Cayenne than in a GLE or an X5 (or an XC90, even) on the road, due to better stability, lower roofline, and lower center-of-gravity.

According to the statistics gathered from my own shop, the latest iterations of BMW engines (especially the B58) are built substantially well. As long as you do your maintenance, these engines should reach 100K miles. But regardless, German engines run hotter. Their regulating coolant temps are 220-230F. Definitely better than the Cayenne and GLE. It’s cheaper than both, while being quicker, more fuel efficient, and coming with 3 year complementary maintenance. Doesn’t make sense why anybody would pay SO much more for a Cayenne when the styling is worse and drives marginally better.. but let’s be honest, the people (mostly soccer moms) buying this aren’t going to be going up canyon roads every day, making the Cayenne pretty much obsolete. Fun fact: when BMW and Toyota decided to collaborate on the Z4 and the Supra, BMW wanted to design the engine. So they sent their proposed twin turbo 6 and the twin turbo 4 to Toyota in Japan for testing. They failed the tests. Toyota noted the failures, and sent them back. (Toyota had started from the get go that reliability would have to be to their standards, they didn’t want their dealerships flooded with repair issues). So BMW made some changes and sent them back for testing. They failed again. So Toyota sent their engineers to Germany. Together, they came to with a design and finally passed all the reliability tests. This came from a friend of mine who is a regional trainer for mechanics at Toyota. It explains so much about the improved reliability of BMW in general. I wouldn’t hesitate at all to buy any newer BMW. I’m sure they even applied what they designed with the final engines to the 8 cylinder. Thanks for the great content. I always enjoy your takes on the different vehicles that you guys review. Depreciation, on average, costs more than a lease.
@1855Media8 ай бұрын
The "lease this car" because of how much it depreciates argument rarely makes any sense. Lease payments are primarily determined by depreciation. And, unless the manufacturer is subsiding the lease program more than the buy/rebate program or you can take advantage of specific tax laws (which are generally not applicable to the typical W2 employee), the lease payments will usually cost you more than the depreciation, otherwise the captive or other finance co. that is leasing you the vehicle would lose money.
@troyjollimore41008 ай бұрын
@@japanwatchconnection But the average person, who wants nothing to do with reselling a vehicle, or even servicing it over the long term, gets what they perceive as a lower monthly payment that doesn't really change after the 36/48/50 month lease period. All they know is they trade keys for a brand new vehicle, which is all that matters to them.
@42dunbar8 ай бұрын
The main advantage of the lease is that the lease company takes the risk that they can sell the car for the residual value. Financing now also favors new cars versus used due to lower financing rates. I do agree that CPO makes a lot of sense with most BMWs.
@1855Media8 ай бұрын
@@42dunbar correct regarding the lease company taking the risk on what the car will be worth at the end of the lease, but they charge for that. It’s another reason why the lease payments usually end up being more than the depreciation.
@2004cyrus8 ай бұрын
Depreciation is usually the 1/3 of the cost of the vehicle - and the lease payments covers that first 1/3.
@2004cyrus8 ай бұрын
@japanwatchconnectionSo much that isn’t accurate here. If you care about money as you wrote, you don’t pay cash for cars that depreciate with each passing year. Invest that cash in real estate. Also, the dealer sells the cars 2 time after the lease return comes back, they don’t sell a car over and over. You are describing what happens at “Buy Here, Pay Here, lots that repossess cars every few months. Those are profit centers. Dealers make their profit in the maintenance department and parts department.

I buy these used as suggested. Currently have a 2021 Xdrive 40I and it great. What I like about BMW, is if you have the capability, you can still do a lot of the maintenance yourself. A lot of people will not do that so that costs needs to be factored in, but if you have the ability, OI change, transmission service (50k ignore that lifetime crap), brakes, diffs and transaxle none of them are that hard. You need a tool to do service modes, etc. but again can be done by a home mechanic. The vehicle drives great and the B58 is an amazing engine.

If I was going to have a car for 5 yrs, would pick Acura for reliability over base X5. For a Type “S” though, performance at 10/10 was slightly weak, + MPG wasn’t great. 50e is well over second faster to 60, faster 1/4 mile, plus way better MPG, but paid about $8K more than MDX. With 315’s on the rear I have no complaints about the handling. Canyon roads out west are a blast for an SUV. The Bowers and Wilkins sound makes you feel like you’re at a concert. The power is so satisfying. I drive7 is very simple to learn and quick to access the main functions of the car. My only critique is the steering inputs are not quite as smooth as the Cayenne. The MB and Audi competition doesn’t come close to what you get with the M50 in my opinion. A turboed BMW out of warranty will bankrupt an owner of average wage all in pursuit of the ultimate driving machine and outdoing the Jones in the neighborhood. But adding a second propulsion system? aka a motor hybrid drive system on top is the proverbial cherry. Pure gold. On some level I can't wait to watch how far these depreciate as suckers try to keep these cars running out of warranty as they shed 50 IP warning lights and related codes as proud owners of vehicles voted mostly likely to become landfill the soonest scramble as their BMW goes into limp mode to find someone smart enough to fix one. Ten years from now, how about finding parts? These vehicles won't exist 10 years from now, all will be in the crusher, of course, careful about crushing that battery. BMW's voted least reliable now? Hold my Bud Light. Owners won't be able to afford the replacement parts as tech's fake their computer diagnostic capability and throw parts at these monstrosities hoping the codes go away. It used to be, stopping at a BMW service center every time cost the customer $1K aka one BMW spending unit. In recent years that has risen to $2K. Multiply that by 3 with a hybrid system out of warranty. BMW's business model of planned obsolescence, just got another steroid injection. Can't make up a more transparent profit motive, all on the backs of the dumb public. Let's call this the tech hustle.
