I was 17 when I joined the AF in 1965. I had no whiskers yet and had never shaved. My second day in boot, my TI grabbed some "peach fuzz" just under my ear and yanked it out. I didn't even know I had "peach fuzz", but I learned that shaving it was much less painful than having it pulled out by my 6'5", 240lb. TI. Smoking was common back then and I smoked. When asked if we were permitted to smoke during our "hurry up and wait" periods, our TI said that we could light up whenever we saw him do it. The SOB didn't smoke, so neither did we.

Just after I entered the delayed enlistment program in March 84, all I heard from my father was this-"YOU BETTER EXERCISE!!" So I did all manner of exercises which included sit-ups, push-ups, running several miles a day, lifting weights & everything else. So by the time I entered basic training in late Sept 84 I was in remarkable shape. I had no problems with doing PT in basic cause I had worked out 6 months previously. I would tell someone who's serious about joining the military to start getting in shape now even before you visit a recruiter.

I joined 4 years ago and the biggest advice I can give is to the straight out of highschool guys, you need to keep in mind its only 2 months, you can do anything for 2 months. DONT look at everything as a punishment, enjoy the PT because its only making you better. Look at it this way, youre getting paid to stuff your face 3 times a day and workout multiple times a day. REALIZE your MTI's were in your shoes before too and they aren't there to fail you, its all an act they are trained to do to make you listen and make you better, they want you to graduate. Realize nothing is personal, and that air force BMT is actually very very easy. The PT isn't hard, anything they ask you to do isnt hard. You eat three times a day and get 5-8 1/2 hours of sleep every night. If you cant do it then you just suck lol

good video! couple things that should also help in BMT. 1. When you roll your socks put one end in the wall locker door. it allows you to get them really hard. 2. even if you the fresh out of highschool guy like me with no hair on your face still shave. Shave against the grain because the peach fuss wont get cut if you dont. I know by experience. 3. Laundry sucks if youre in old dorms, it is nice in the new dorms. choose laundry crew wisely 4. try to be dayroom crew! 5. break in both pairs of boots! This is one of the most important. in your first week you will wear boots half and shoes half of the day. every day switch which boots you wear so they both break in. guys try to keep a pair nice and perfect but they never broke them in. then when they got wet or muddy they got blisters from having to march several miles in brand new boots. 6. be scared to go to sick call. dont be scared to go to the dispensery 7. dont be naive!

I found this very interesting. I was in BMT in 1984, at that time a "sir sandwich" was mandatory, even to airmen outside of BMT. Also, EC was called "Dorm Guard". Telling them to salute anyone "with shiny things on their collar" was hilarious. We were told to look for shoulder boards, which got me caught on a Chief Master Sgt. I don't know if they still wear them.

This is hands down T H E most informative bmt video on the internet. It was actually short in time, considering all the broad areas you covered. You clearly carry yourself well and set the tone for others interested while remaining in a very professional manner. I appreciate you mentioning the small details like when an mti told you to stop doing "that." I will mention to other recruits DO NOT to tell your mti "sorry." The only critique I have is that you say "uhh" a lot. You are very well spoken and I reiterate that you are a solid public speaker however; that's something I always notice, filler words. I appreciate when older educated minds would remind me not to ummm. Otherwise, you're video is perfect!!! I highly recommend to others recruits watching. I do have one question/request: Could you briefly cover the volunteer topic? I"m big into volunteering; in general, I know it can make a significant dent in a career. What are some ways I can make some connections via volunteering in the AF, to strengthen myself not only in my field but my overall AF resume? If you are too busy I understand!! haha I know you juggle quite a lifestyle. Thanks Kyle!

Thank you for having such a straightforward answers for everything I'm only 16 but I'm strongly considering joining the Air Force my grandfather did and I think that it would be a really good opportunity for me. Being a girl and joining the Air Force is kind of scary and things could go wrong but I'm strongly considering anyways. I haven't told anybody that I am considering joining the Air Force because mainly they would probably try to talk me out of it and not have Faith in me and I'm very small person but other people's opinions doesn't really matter to me. As long as I have faith in myself I guess that's all that matters.

Kortney Ames That's awesome that you're wanting to go into Air Force. I'm 17 and enlisting in Air Force at this moment(I just got cleared to start the processing). Personally if you want to go into Air Force, even if they try to convince you not to. It's all your choice, nobody can make that decision but yourself. I was in basic in 1968 at Amarillo AFB. I watched the video to see how it's done now. Some things have changed in 50-some years. Back then, the first word out of your mouth was always 'sir'. In basic, you saluted your TI and anyone else who was permanent party (although they told you it was only done for basic). You were indeed told to shave every day (whether you had facial hair at that tender young age, or not) and that included your neck too. Tattoo's were forbidden. Back then everyone smoked cigarettes. You absolutely didn't smoke until the TI said "light 'em up if you've got 'em". The rest was a trip down memory lane. Thanks!

Good video. I went through BMT back in 2004. I tried to stay under the radar and wound up as a chow runner. Having to deal with the snake pit three times a day was not fun, but looking back, it's good for a laugh or two. And band flight.... when you first arrive at BMT, when one of the MTIs asks who all plays a musical instrument, don't raise your hand unless you play the snare drum or a brass instrument like the trumpet. If you do, you'll wind up on a bass drum.

The trick is to be lazy. I was one of the hard workers of my flight, but after it was all said and done, I really didn't get anything out of working harder than I needed to. Unless there is a clear and present need to shift into high-gear, just get away with cruising through. Volunteer for Dayroom Crew (if you get to choose details). When your MTI stops coming in before reveille, start setting your watch to go off early in the morning, and start making your bed and shaving before everyone crowds the bathroom. Take your time when using the latrine; enjoy the couple of minutes you have to just sit and not get yelled at. Learn all the little tricks and tips before you go in, and write them down. Like I said, I worked hard. And I can tell you, there's no reason for it. To get recycled, you have to be doing something wrong. As long as you appear to be doing what you're told, you'll get by. Even if you aren't putting forth max effort.

So like...if you are asked something and you can reply with yes sir or no sir but then they ask something else that needs to be answered with more than yes sir/no sir you say your reporting statement then? IT just seems weird to say yes sir or no sir then say your reporting statement afterwards to answer another question.

@calvin12141214 9 жыл бұрын
It depends on your MTI. If it's a "yes" or "no" question usually you would be allowed to answer "yes sir or ma'am " but some MTI's will still yell at you just because.

This is definitely going to help me... I've been thinking about joining the Air Force for about 2 years now, and next year when I go into 9th grade I'm planning on joining the ROTC to get me "ready" for the Military. I get mocked a lot for already wanting to be in the Military at 13... but it's just something that really interests me. I'd really like to be able to work on any aircraft. My brother was in the Marines and before that my grandfather and my great grandfather were in the Air Force... so it basically runs in the family. I just want to say thank you for the advice, and also... thanks for inspiring me and making want to push myself harder to be able to achieve my goal and be in the USAF. (also... sorry for the random writing... I kind of just threw everything together haha)

Be outstanding, but don't stand out. Having facial hair makes you a target. When you show up, don't wear shirts with logos. Don't wear grilles or jewelry. Don't bring weapons to BMT. No knives or guns-people are stupid enough to do that. Don't be a leader for the first several weeks-you don't know what you are doing and the people you lead won't know any better-so you have to take all the crap that the stupid people are doing.

Forensource Take BMT seriously, but don't take it too seriously. The TI is going tell that you are shit or great depending on the day of the week-and how the other ncos are doing Basic is a mind game that you are meant to get through. The military doesn't want you to fail, you do that by your own actions.

I've always heard to get in great shape before going into BMT. Recently I had a revision in my mindset, I'm planning on signing on a 9T500 contract which will include additional PT and instruction in prep for SW Prep. The Ones Ready podcast said that so long as I can crush the PAST test any day of the week at least a month before shipping out to BMT, Thunderbolt or Warhawk shouldn't be a problem. The idea is that you're shooting for just above the minimum so the instructors at SW Prep and A&S can get you into shape so you have room to grow. Because otherwise, if you're in the best shape of your life, you're like a car already in the red zone and they're going to push you over which could potentially result in you self eliminating out of A&S.

Things that stood out for me were 1. get a short haircut and shave before you leave for basic, it keeps the TI's from singling you out when you arrive. 2. exercise - you can never exercise enough, run, do pushups and sit ups, don't have to be in super shape but it makes the initial PT sessions so much easier. 3. Learn how to spit shine shoes 4. Learn how to hem pants - they gave us a sewing kit and we had to hem our issued uniform pants which was a problem for those of us who never sewed anything before.

Michael Williams assuming he passes the physical the key to being offered enlistment in the AF is a score of 50 or better minimum (60+ preferred) on the AFQT portion of the ASVAB test. The higher your scores the better your chances as we tend to take the top scores first. Today's ASVAB is similar to the SAT. So it pays to study for it.
