I've always understood selling out to be when you have an ethical/moral position on something and go against that for money.
@davidarundel61872 жыл бұрын
Not always , as my landlord regularly 'sells out ' certain tenants it gets gossiped to about . Complaints get laid , leis are sent in response , court action often follows , with still more lies from the landlords staff , selling out the applicant , to avoid haveing to cop the penaltys , for their actions . Others be known have walked off jobs , post trauma accidents which knocked them out - medical help was denied , so the employee walked , due to the employers 'selling out rights , and basic rights at that .

Not really, selling out is switching from doing Music as Art to doing Music as a contractual obligation. I remember when Muse did Neutron Star Collision solely for one of the Twilight movies and they where so close to being called complete sellouts if it wasn't for the fact that said song happened to be an absolute banger that works even better outside the movie.

It always has been. Every business needs the phone company and power company, then we needed an internet connection, etc… As technology changes, so does the business model. Like it or not, these are large scale utilities, no one individual can manage alone. Just because one uses a set of infrastructure to build their business, doesn’t make them any less of an entrepreneur. If so, using the phone, roads, electricity, natural gas, computer, internet, copying machines, fax machines, etc… would all be disqualified.

The California Raisins were lead by singer/drummer Buddy Miles. He drummed with Jimi Hendrix in Band of Gypsys, was a founding member of Electric Flag, and was in Santana's touring band and recorded a live duet album with him. However it was The California Raisins that earned Miles his 1st platinum plaque. While they were a novelty act created by marketers to sell raisins, I could care less. The vocal and musical performances are great and commercials helped put some money in an unsung legend's pocket!

You can’t say that using a song for a commercial doesn’t reduce the impact and importance of a piece of music. Whatever the inspiration that went into the song, that meaning is now diluted and tied to something short lived and superficial. “Like a rock” comes to mind, that song is now about selling trucks.

Attack and Release was an album I listened to quite a bit. I did everything I could to get my co-workers into it because I work construction and the radio here in Utah sucks ass. Nevertheless, no takers. Alot of my music is in the darker, more extreme corners of the spectrum, but The Black Keys to me sounded kind of classic but new. Like Credence in a way, you'd have to have your head up your ass not to enjoy it. So one day much to my amazement they start playing "next girl" on the radio and I'll be damned if all the nay sayers were suddenly on board with the Black Keys. They really hadn't departed from the sound they had and what made them appealing. The only difference was that the gate keepers let them in to the castle keep. I think people by and large like what has been approved and accepted and everything from booze to music, if it's hand crafted and bares nuance and intricacy it can be the best in the world but isn't going to be popular until the powers that be let it through and what the few already knew suddenly has success in the mainstream. People are sheep and need a shepherd or they won't know where the fuck to go.

"Selling Out" was a huge deal in the 90's. Selling Out meant you stopped making music just to make good music and you allowed the commercial industry to start guiding you in order to maximize profits. I'm not saying that an artist shouldn't be allowed to make lots of money, its the part about allowing the commercial industry to start changing your image, changing your views and beliefs, telling you what you're allowed to say and changing the music you make in order to maximize profits. Everyone has the right to earn a living... but everything bad that has happened to the music industry happened because of "Selling Out". It is why we have so much garbage music now. Not saying that there aren't real artists out there making good music, but they are few and far between.

Contrarian opinion ahead: I do believe starting to do songs for commercials or simply music "a la carte" to the highest bidder is in fact Selling Out and fans have the right to feel ashamed or not buy any more music from said artist. Hendrix would've never signed for his music in a commercial, Mercury would've killed who suggested putting Don't Stop Me Now in an advertisement, and yes, they would have been right in doing so.

Watching all these politically outspoken musicians and actors do commercials for the companies and corporations that have insane control over our political process is some of the saddest crap I see when I turn on the tube. Watering down your music with overexposure to get Nabisco money is the same thing as cosigning that corporation. Impossible to do ads without selling out.

I say to the students in all sincerity, there is no possible way of attaining a quality or a desired attribute without claiming it. In order for an individual to consciously let go of a thing, he must have something that he feels is stronger to which he can anchor. As students become conscious of this, the confidence and strength will come to them to take the step.

I gotta disagree about Through the Grape Vine. That is one of my all time favorite songs as it came on b101 every morning when I was growing up. But also that commercial brought it to a whole nother level because we didn’t have mtv playing Temptations and Four Tops. It cemented that song into my brain. Inspiring me to both get into music and animation.

I think it depends on the commercial. Some brands (like Apple) are really good at finding cool music to go along with the visuals in their ads. There's been a couple Apple commercials that have turned me on to artist I wasn't aware of.
