I saw in a documentary on the rat pack that all of those ad lib routines they did together on stage at the Sands were written by Joey Bishop. I don't know if were true or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true.

Joey and Peter Lawford had already been banished by the rat pack, as of the early sixties. Sammy and Dean still worked with them on occasion, as far as I know, but I'm not sure if Sinatra would have.

@@loiswright6838 Someone on Turner Classics once explained the reasons that Joey and Peter weren't in ROBIN AND THE 7 HOODS. I don't remember the specifics but Joey also had some kind of falling out with Sinatra. It's also spelled out in the RAT PACK film with Ray Liotta, Joe Mantenga and Don Cheadle. I think Joey ticked off Johnny Carson too because he went from regularly guest hosting to total obscurity, rather quickly. You didn't cross Sinatra and/or Carson and maintain a prosperous career in the business, back in the day.

Fabulous, very entertaining. I really like Joey, he's such a clever, witty guy with a lot going on under the surface, I don't think he got the accolades he deserved really, the first season of the Joey Bishop Show was hilarious. Dean is OK but he needs someone super funny to bounce off.

Dean ain't drunk. It was always a combination of a naturally very laid back personality combined with a drunk persona he worked up after he split with Jerry. He needed a hook. Drunkie Dean, that was his HOOK. Starting in 57' through about 75' - 76', about 20 years. After that he was often quite smashed unfortunately, but booze had little to do with it.

+2packs4sure I'm wondering if the late seventies was around the time Dean severly hurt his back playing golf. I think he got hooked on the painkillers and it really messed him up

+db2664 You're in the ballpark, I'm thinking early to mid 70's but no one alive knows the answer for sure. I take that back, Cathy Hawn probably knows but i've never seen a quote from her EVER about Dean or anything else. I do remember reading that Cathy would give Dean injections for his back, in his back......... If ANYBODY knows what Dean was up to, on, and/or into, in the mid 70's she'd be the one.

+2packs4sure I remember reading a TV Guide interview with Dean in 1975 and according to the reporter Dean interupted the interveiw to receive a shot from a "doctor", Dean claimed it was a vitamin B-12 injection but who knows what it could have been. Bottom line Cathy Hawn was a bad influence on Dean and he really didn't rebound from it until he hooked up with Jeanne again around 1982.

Dean had a great voice but he was lazy in his singing. No emotion no feelings no passion. If he had put that into his singing he would have been even better.
