Glad to see the warranty use for the PS5, it's much more entertaining to watch you attempt to fix consoles that have previously been opened or are out of warranty imo. My season 2 suggestion: Have a "console repair bingo" card with some spaces like "faulty hdmi", "blown capacitor(s)", and other problems you've seen. Once a bingo card is complete, you could have a high-risk/reward episode, or let a top comment decide what your next repair will be. Whatever you decide, keep up the great content!

@@KostasTsakalidis/videos You dig as much as it takes to lose the fault. And when you're done, you go back and either alternate path your other traces that might've been lost (and you check for those while you work) or just make sure you don't touch stuff. I've seen craters, literal craters dug in super high density boards in order to effect a repair. Like 5 layers deep with intricate pathing and all that. If the cause is just, you go as deep as you need to (in that one particular case, it was a rare development unit that had been disabled with a pair of snippers to the mobo). And if you want "fun", look up "james channel diy console" and you'll find a guy who... doesn't much care about such trivial things as layers, bruv straight up saws boards in half and has fun. :) Fair warning, it's not for the faint of heart.

Joey, great job. Two things: 1. Watch northwest repair to learn more about grinding multiple layers and running jumpers / conformal coating. He's great. 2. You could've shaved down the solder mask on the top and put two more caps on there to make it a full repair. I'm not an electrical engineer, but I wouldn't want to stress the other 2 caps more by not replacing the two that failed. Great repair. It's so much fun to see your skills improve.

As someone who is nearly 20 years in the soldering field, i can tell you, that is a lot of unnessessery heat to the board while changing hdmi port. Do not fill the holes with solder and kill it with the heat. Leave them clear and after putting port add flux and solder it. It will fill the holes trough easier and quicker. Also, when being tinned that hdmi pins will be soldered in one pass from upper side even with soldering iron. Much faster with a lot less heat. BtW nice repair man...

I'm over 50 years in, although with multilayer SMD boards for the latter part, and I agree - I do wince sometimes (especially injecting high current where you don't know where it's going, and some tracks will burn out at much lower currents. But always interesting to watch.

congrats on clearing that multi-layer short! If you need to add back some capacitors to that area, you can carefully expose the copper under the mask to make a new pad and just solder them, or even just solder them to the side of the existing capacitors. You've managed to do a technique I've seen before on GPU repairs where they've also suffered some burn damage. The areas immediately around those vias (if they go through the entire board) are thermal vias, so every layer there should be the same in that immediate zone, so by grinding down a layer or two, you can pull away any melted and fused layers and clear that conductive carbonized stuff from the burn.

For the future, in general if you have any charred thing on the board, it definitely has to be removed as it will almost certainly cause a short, though maybe not a complete short (especially if it doesn't look too bad), so it may still work and make that area heat up more... which could eventually make it burn completely. What you did there was the right way to deal with it, after seeing others to this sort of repair.

Definitely do another series - you're definitely learning as you go. However, I don't know what your general electronics background is but, as someone who has designed PCBs before, those two caps were there for a reason and there may be operating circumstances that could cause problems without them. When you're dealing with fairly high frequencies on some planes, there can be all sorts of weird effects and these caps would be there to reduce that.

28:22 this gets a lot of people who don't have the courage (or let's be fair, the knowledge) to dig under burnt things. It might look AOK on the topside, but it's what's under that gets you. Scroll back a few frames before the archeology and it looked presentable, no worse for wear, but, clearly somewhere, something was touching. Messy things, blown caps. One of the reasons i don't particularly like modern boards. Small size, cool, damage potential, massive.

I bought an Xbox One S with water damage and supposedly a bad power supply for $30. I opened it up and checked the power supply. Was working. I started to inspect the board around the bottom to find a couple of caps had bit the dust. With some minor corrosion. I cleaned the board up. Replaced the caps with similar size from a PlayStation board. The board powered on. I put it all back together and it had been working flawlessly ever since.
