Very good, busy and interacting Peter Donald. Bill Stewart definitely lend him an ear or two. Abercrombie plays well too. Very good trio, still sounds modern in 2022. Was later on completed with Richie Beirach on piano to a quartett and made some good records together like "Arcade".

Unique in the Abercrombie corpus, great, and needs to be available. I have a '79 copy.

First time I hear Peter Donald. This is insane I can't understand why the guy is so unknown he's obviously a major jazz drummer. In credible playing
@cosmicpickle65626 ай бұрын
Yes, I too love Donald's playing. He was the drummer on all 3 of the 'Abercrombie Quartet' albums 1978-1980. Though he quit the music scene not long after that, I believe to do a 'straight' non-musical career as a teacher. So the fact that he didn't play a lot of sessions may be partly why he isn't as well-known as others who recorded for decades.

One of his best recordings of just pure group jazz conversation, also JA is in the zone big time alongside his equally adept bandmates. It's cool seeing this here, as a huge fan I bought this album in LA for $6.00 when it came out.

Yes I too was pretty happy with the list price when it was first released and happily handed over the $6 for the album.

was so so very sad to hear of his recent passing... this record is a true masterpiece a pre cursor to Pat's Question & Answer. Donald, & Mraz.... YIKES! Saw him with these cats at the lighthouse in CA, adding Ritchie Bierach on keys, still one of the greatest 2 sets I have ever heard.

Oh I loved that original quartet with Beirach, Mraz, and Donald myself. I guess you've heard 'Characters'? My personal favorite of his.. If not, somebody just posted it up in full very recently: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqfKhnSGiqd5qJo

@cosmicpickle65627 жыл бұрын
It's noticeably Abercrombie from the sound of the guitar and his playing style (and from my favorite period of his music as well), but the direction, being mostly covers of jazz tunes, is a bit different and a really fun 'other side' to what he was doing at the time.Glad you're enjoying it as i've played it myself countless times....

You're very welcome. I'm so glad others are as interested in many of these obscure albums i'm posting and i'm a JA fanatic anyway. I just stumbled across this album one day in a record store in the very early 1980's-had no idea it existed either. If I hadn't been in that store on that day I probably still wouldn't have discovered that it existed, even in these days since the internet came along!

Guitarist Bobby Broom released an album 'Stand' with his trio in 2001, covering 60 pop tunes. At times the vibe is eerily similar Straight Flight. Here's one I like but the whole album is great : kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIfSY5eweKh3oqc

This would have been in Pat Metheny's record collection for sure. 'Bessie's Blues' especially sounds like a big influence on Pat's 'Rejoicing' album. Thanks for posting!
@cosmicpickle65627 жыл бұрын
I agree-from the first time I heard Metheny in the late 1970's I thought that Abercrombie must have been an influence on him (among others)...

guys, they are all Jim Hall influence. Please.

@@cosmicpickle6562 Abercrombie is much more interesting me to listen to than Metheny, even though their guitars seem to have the same tone.
@cosmicpickle65623 жыл бұрын
@@johnstewart7025 I'm fairly sure Abercrombie was an influence of Metheny's... Seems to me Metheny's original tone on his earliest albums was based off of Abercrombie's tone for one. And to me if you compare their all-solo albums 'Characters' (1977) and 'New Chautauqua' (1978), 'Characters' is a far superior album, IMO.

still in fiery right-hand mode, very Martino-esque, but more elastic. A very different Abercrombie to the later one.
@unclebenadryl82327 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. It is very Martino-esque as far as phrasing, the pick attack and the warm dark tone but more wild and organic/elastic. I didn't know he played in this style until I stumbled upon this recording.
@BurnsTennis Жыл бұрын
Very nice upload, thanks. I find it strange. The same artist (Abercrombie) appears on a different label other than ECM and all of a sudden that introspective sound is thrown out of the window. How did ECM manage to get their artists to sound so subdued so often?
@cosmicpickle6562 Жыл бұрын
Great question. Of course the possibility is that John was very aware of this not being an ECM session so he went for a more 'mainstream' up-tempo, less introspective jazz approach. Plus the fact that the albums was mostly covers as well may have moved the playing in that direction.
@omarelric7 жыл бұрын

No ECM and probably own publishing (JAM, never heard of)... In those days, expressing standards in this way was not popular in the USA, but in Europe is was very appreciated!
@larryh.31736 жыл бұрын
Not to be argumentative, but it is *NOT* an ECM release. It's on the JAM label and, in my experience, is crazy hard to find in any form. Once they added Richie Beirach... there was the John Abercrombie Quartet, and their first album (yes, on ECM) was 'Arcade'. Definitely one of my favorites by John throughout his long career. Maybe a bit off-topic here, I suppose, I was fortunate enough to see him perform three times over maybe ten years. Great stuff! R.I.P., John.
Larry H is correct. It's not an ECM release. The JAM label is Japanese. Abercrombie brought the record to a 1980 interview on KCRW Santa Monica. blogs.kcrw.com/music/2017/08/john-abercrombie/

Hey buddy. I just haven't felt like making a 'live' video myself, so instead thought I would share these more rare things I have. I don't have many out of print things that have never seen a CD release but why not make them available to be heard I figured. Worth it? Absolutely appreciate the time you've taken to share this ! I had my computer for at least a couple of years before I even realized it had Windows Movie Maker! All my LP's are in storage, as soon as I can I'll get them, a turntable w/ usb(?)... and begin sharing the LP's that remain out of print or hard to find. It will take some time though... -Glenn

I've never used any 'Movie Maker' program of any type before until whenever my first posting of an album was up here. I just couldn't figure it out-I have no experience with this type of thing. But so many people have used it to post things like personal photos I figured it just can't be that hard or time consuming to do, you know? The fact that you're enjoying it makes it all worthwhile buddy. I have a handful more albums that I will do in the future as well. Besides I think Abercrombie (along with a bunch of others, naturally) is a national treasure. So glad you're diggin' it Glenn! -Gary
@GlennMichaelThompson7 жыл бұрын
I am diggin' to the utmost! I also just dove into Windows Movie Maker... there was a learning curve, but I managed to finish a few things by adding random photos to a sound file. I'm sure there's more one can do with it... all in good time. I began trying out Windows Paint program for doodling some visual art, quite enjoyable. It actually spurred me on to posting some of it on G+... I've since been invited to join a few art communities there. (Abstract Art, Abstract Impressionism and a couple others.) Keeps me out of trouble! lol :0) Glenn
