I met John Cusack back in the late 90s. He was at a NY Ranger game with sheryl Crow, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. I went right up to him and asked him to sign my ticket. I told him I loved him. He smiled, was very shy and signed my ticket. I kept the pen for years. I wanted to quote Say Anything, but I was shaking I was so nervous and couldn’t get any out.

Same! And after that movie I started watching ANYTHING with either John or Joan Cussack in it. Even if I didn't enjoy the movie (e.g. Runaway Bride - but that's cos of Julia Roberts) at least I'd enjoy the character THEY played 😁
@sonablom
@sonablom 4 жыл бұрын
@@susie9893 same. Its weird to see people on here wish he'd mention say anything. I watched his older stuff after loving grosse pointe blank and just did not enjoy it as much as his 90s, 00s stuff. Even serendipity is a movie I normally might have skipped but it was quite charming.
@susie9893
@susie9893 4 жыл бұрын
@@sonablom actually I didn't like Serendipity. Think I dozed off at one point (not really a good recommendation - I saw Jumanji the next level over the summer when it was stinking hot here and we were surrounded by fires and I hadn't been sleeping. I don't go to the movies much anymore but I was happy to pay that much to hang out in ac for a couple of hours. But once I was sitting I started drifting off and thought: bugger, I'm gonna miss this but it started and I enjoyed it all thru despite my exhaustion so Serendipity meh. I think he just did that 1 to pay the bills) But then I wasn't hugely into High Fidelity either But you're right, he is quite charming. In a quiet way. That's 1 of the things I really love about him - it's like he specialises in the subtle performance. I believe that's how he held his own against the larger than life role of Nick Cage in Con Air
@sonablom
@sonablom 4 жыл бұрын
@@susie9893 true. I think he Must Love Dogs for the paycheck too. He does go with the more understated performance sometimes which worked well in love and mercy I think. Of his romcoms I remember loving American sweethearts the best but watched it again the other day it was just ok. Some parts are actually fairly cringe.

Eh, I’m not sure about High Fidelity. It’s hard for a lot of younger audiences to connect to it, honestly. Hyping you’re self up to talk to your partner, figuring things out. Buying records in person, actually having to talk to knowledge people to get solid recommendations. I personally am living in a country where record stores & movie rental places still are quite popular. But reaching out to friends & family in the west, hearing “ why didn’t he text her?” “ You can buy CDs at a store? Not just the library?” Broke my heart a bit.

@@gusgrau3594 I don't think that's precisely what they connect to. Also, kids do see each other, conversate, adventure in person. My son is 13 and my dad took him to comic stores, record stores right off the bat. And libraries. I think it's much more the young heartache, vulnerability, chasing at self awareness? I love it so much...but im well over the age limit to get the back drop at age 39. :)

He OWNED in Pushing Tin with Cate Blanchett. The viewer couldn't take his eyes off him. The subtle nervous competitive reactions that only John Cusack can do were everywhere. And not a mention, not just here but nowhere. It was a film that let him shine and shine he did. What is wrong with humanity.

Being John Malkovich was life-altering for me. For about an hour after the movie everything seemed possible. I had absolute clarity and confidence that everything happened for a reason. Would have loved an acknowledgement of Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer, Hot Pursuit, The Sure Thing, Say Anything. None of them are "great" movies critically or artistically, but he was what made each of them special. I know the two he made with Steve Holland are a contentious subject with him, but both are rather dark-humored under their wacky, zany top layers. Arguably launched his whole career with them. Oh, well.
