Part 4 will be it on the water. In Iowa it's going to have to wait till next spring.

Hi Mike, inspirational stuff indeed. I'm looking at a 25HP Kohler sawmill motor sitting on a Yamaha 50hp 4 stroke lower unit for my 23ft yamaha fishing boat. Getting the bits together first. I'm thinking that due to the limited Rev range of these V-Twins, you gotta use a higher pitch prop ,like you mentioned in part 1, so that at wide open, power of the motor is not wasted. That way you can then Rev down to 75% power for cruise speed. But one thing with the governor setting as well is that you well get that torquey throttle response as it responds to the governors inputs. Maybe, with the governor removed you could then just apply throttle manually like a standard outboard motor?
@Michaelsbackyardmarina3 жыл бұрын
That could be the case for sure. I will see when I get Frankenstein out on the water

Nice job on that. That shaft coupler is very nice. I seen another guy use love-joy/nova-jaw couplers which also allowed easy removal.

It's alive! great job. I enjoy tinkering too. I'm not trying to be picky but, one thing I suggest is that you always cross tighten bolts where ever you use a gasket. I will be looking forward to more videos.

Michael You need some fresh air circulation in the shop with the motor running. I think that goofy stuff at the end was evidence of lack of oxygen.
@cerescop4 жыл бұрын
I have seen numerous such motor cross overs. They always seem to end up the same. Lawn mower engines with governor top outat about 3000 to 3600 rpm. Outboard motors top out at 5000 to 6000 rpm. The lower speed of non-modified engines decrease boat speed to 1/4 of normal outboard engine boat speed. Its better than walking but without the governor most lawnmower engines can attain about 4500-5000 rpm and make the swap worth it. Your thoughts....
@Michaelsbackyardmarina4 жыл бұрын
Very true, but this project is not about the speed, it's about the ability to go through nasty water and not worry about the engine being water cooled.

Great vids, I have the same 21hp sitting in the garage. I’ve been looking around for a donor outboard. I’ve been wondering if the donor outboard is too big, ie. 40hp, if the gear ratio would bog the 21hp. Would a smaller outboard offer a better ratio? Like maybe a 15hp? Have you tried yours yet in water? Am I over thinking this?
@Michaelsbackyardmarina3 жыл бұрын
I put mine on a 30hp. The 4 stroke is going to have more low end torque. There are a few more options for props on the 40's. I haven't tried mine yet. I have a boat I'm working on that I will be able to try it on.

I know you said this is not about speed, but there are many who are using such engines (usually horizontal shaft) for go carts, sand buggies, ATVs etc. They take the governor out completely and hook the throttle cable directly to the carb butterfly valve like a car or motorcycle engine. They get more revs, more direct response to the throttle, etc. Some people are using them to power ultralight aircraft. This 4-stroke will never hit the revs of a 2-stroke, but can have some pretty respectable performance. Doing so, may be "Frankenstein Meets Godzilla!" or something like that.
@slohand424 жыл бұрын
BTW, removing the governor completely and linking direct to carb will avoid the ugly over-revs you had problems with earlier.
@Michaelsbackyardmarina4 жыл бұрын
the over revs were from me not knowing how to properly adjust the governor, lesson learned for sure

The low RPM for shifting is good, but don't run that engine at too slow a speed for a long period of time. It is air cooled and needs the higher RPMs to keep enough air flowing to keep it from overheating.

yep just for shifting purposes

Is it possible to remove the governor completely by putting a stiff return spring on the throttle?
@Michaelsbackyardmarina4 жыл бұрын
Without the governor you run the risk of over revving the engine. There would be a little more to it to make sure the throttle maintained control

Very well done. Thanks for sharing this info. I do have a pretty severe dislike of vacuum fuel pumps. I just replaced one on my '98 Suzuki atv at 5000 farm miles. It started with flat spots in the fuel delivery 3 or 4 yrs ago but I struggled by ok. Finally I faced the music. As I removed the complete front body work and gear selection console to gain access to the old pump, in the back of my mind was my 1978 Goldwing GL1000 motorcycle with a FACET 2# electric fuel pump. It was installed by the previous owner and still works like a charm and I've had the bike 15 years. I suspect it would cure your fuel delivery issue. Just an unrequested opinion! But you're drawing fuel thru a long length of hose and the little facet would be just the ticket. I'm anxious to see it on a boat soon. Your build is a lot better than a new Suzuki motor for $3600.00!!! Thanks again.

This project is all done on donations and the boat is being built by the kids (with my help and guidance). If you have something that you may want to donate it doesn't have to look brand new we will paint it. It would be greatly appreciated. And if not that's ok too. Thanks for your time.

You need to install a "kill switch" in case you fall out of the boat, or the motor runs away from you again. A Kill Switch grounds the magneto out and stops the engine immediately. A safety item you will find on any boat made in the last 30 years, why compromise on safety?
