Hi Dave, glad to see we share similar heroes, I'm getting my Frusciante and Hendrix tats soon-ish which I can't wait to get. you are the reason I bought this amp, When you made the MG100 video, you metioned you found a favourite tone, I use the same one just changed ever so slightly today and I haven't changed it since, I find it works for almost every song ever made, haha. Crunch channel: GAIN 1, BASS 5, MIDDLE 4, TREBLE 2. thanks for the videos, great playing btw.

Dave, I have been looking around for lessons on Can't Stop, and your version sounds the best and it looks exactly like John plays it. I have been practicing this one for a while now, I understand the concept, but the muting and unmuting the right strings starts to drive me a bit mad. Is there any shortcut you can recommend in practicing this, or is it just a matter of time and developing the feeling for it? I looked up videos from Ross Bolton which opened up another universe of guitar playing for me, but I'm wondering if you have any special advise on getting Can't Stop right. I am totally blown away that you can also improvise on it, I remember seeing John doing that and I was like, no way he's doing that riff, jumping around and then also improvising on it. So hat off to you!
@thedavesimpson
@thedavesimpson 8 жыл бұрын
Howde. I shall be covering this in my next Learn to play like John vids. There is no shortcut no. Its like you say just a case of getting a feel for it and spending time doing it. It took me a while to get it and be comfy with it. It just takes time like anything. :) Thank you very much indeed. :)

You nailed the tone! I've been playing around with my vibro champ + mooer rumble drive and can get pretty damn close but its a little too woody. I have an or-15 as well, do you think I could get closer to the tone by switching amps? I'd use my marshall, but it needs to get ungodly loud before sounding like it should.

@thedavesimpson
@thedavesimpson 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much indeed. All i can recommend is to crank your pre amp to full then back it off till its the right amount of gain. If that doesn't get the right amount of gain them i would recommend using an overdrive pedal set to low gain. :)

awesome bids bud, question tho, do you think modern Marshalls (I have a DSL 40C) need their eqs turned 0 treble and 0 mids, bass on 10 to get the vintage tone? I swear I saw Johns major with a 3 treble 6 middle and 10 bass
@thedavesimpson
@thedavesimpson 8 жыл бұрын
I feel more modern marshall's do need to have there EQ turned down. They don't have the warmness that the old ones have. John's Major and jubilee would be a lot darker than the newer marshall's. Thank you for watching. :)

I thought the marshall sounded a little cleaner then the Orange, maybe more articulate the orange was closer to being slightly muddier when going back and forth betweent he 2 maybe you had the orange up a little louder and it started to over drive the camera mic or something.

hi dave! great great great video! But i have a question.. how do you keep balance the volume on the overdrive channel and the master volume of the amp? So, in some other words, to get the tone in a live performance (for example), where i definitely have to increase the master volume, that tone just changes and is no more the same. So do you have any advice to control the tone even if the master volume on the amp is more than 1 or 2 (like in your video)?
@thedavesimpson
@thedavesimpson 8 жыл бұрын
I usually just run the OD's channel volume on 10 and then just turn up the master. Never had any issues of tone changing this way. I normally run my MG's on 4 live and my Orange on about 5 or 6 depending. Thanks for watching. :)

do you reckon there is any big difference between the orange cr120 head with a decent cab and the orange cr120 combo? i play a ton in my bedroom and jam maybe once a week with friends and other guitar players, so having a stack is kind of pointless for me at this time. i just feel like a combo would be more practical, but i don't want to lose that gorgeous tone!

Try a the british 60s setting with low treble. boost the mids and bass. I would think maybe bass near full. Gain wise. Start with it off and roll it in till it starts to distort a little tiny amount. Give the crunch channel a go. Try gain on full or anywhere between full and half depending on how much gain you get. Start at full and lower if needed. Then have bass and middle on 10. No treble unless its needed and have the channel volume on full and use the master to lower the volume. :)

You might struggle with a fender. They don't really have the mids. My advice would be to get a Marshall style overdrive pedal and use that as your clean John tone. Something like a Tubescreamer mini or tone city golden plexi will do the job. Run it through your clean channel and you should get closer. :)

You can get close with the MG30 but it just wont sound as big due to the size but you can get close. You want to use the OD1 setting with the gain low. Bass about half. Boost it if it sounds to thin and no treble and mids start them at 0 and roll them in till it sounds right. :)

I have an MG30CFX and I use the crunch channel, Gain-2 Bass-10 Mid-5-6 Treble- 5 and depending on the song, reverb is either off or at around 2 o'clock. One more thing, don't try to push the channel volume to try and add preamp distortion because I found out that it really kills the tone with this amp. Try to keep the channel and master volume fairly similar.

WOW ... again ... sorry (;-)) Just think you could use about any amp ... its you that does it ... I'm at the verge of getting my bluesy tone out of many amps ... but you are able to get any tone like "it's no problem" ... great stuff!

+Steve Thompson Actually he used his 1963-65 Fender Telecaster (the one that has the letter“F” embedded into the pickguard) to record Can't Stop. He also used it on Scar Tissue and Easily from Californication.

I have a curious question; in Slane, during Can't Stop, how does he switch from the watery effect(Electric Mistress/CE2) to the DS2 real quick?
@thedavesimpson
@thedavesimpson 8 жыл бұрын
Its just a case of being very quick with his pedals. They would be setup close and in such a way he could do it almost seamlessly. :)
@lilystrong9870
@lilystrong9870 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't see a switching pedal except for the psm-5 (but that's a loop). I really like it when he uses the effect for the bridge.

+Lily Strong it does sound great doesn't it. you never know. it could have been added in the mixing phase. might not of done it live.
@lilystrong9870
@lilystrong9870 8 жыл бұрын
That's a possibility. Slane sounds too good. The mixing engineer must've done a lot of work to make it suitable for a dvd. If not, Frusciante did a splendid job.

I wish i could master the whole strum but hit one note thing like you do in the riff...
@yurimodin7333
@yurimodin7333 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Matthews its basically like playing acoustic where you keep the strumming hand in constant motion like a metronome but only touch the strings when you want to make a note.....also fret hand muting/letting up on the strings (to mute them) comes into play alot (kind of like what good bass players do with their fretting hand)
@thedavesimpson
@thedavesimpson 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Matthews Just dive into it and practise. Its all about getting your right hand to hit individual strings and your left hand killing the strings and notes you don't want to play. Thank you for watching. :)
