My favourite Villa manager we’ve had, he had us playing some great football & signed some cracking players, I remember hearing on the radio on the morning he’d resigned I was absolutely gutted. Love how he still talks about Villa as *WE* *JOHN GREGORY HE’S ONE OF OUR OWN!* 💜💙

What a bloke. I have so much love and respect for Johnnie Greg, easily my favorite ever Villa manager. The fact he told it how it was, was a breath of fresh air & his passion for the club was unrivalled. I've read his book about 10 times so great to be able to hear some of this being told by the man himself 💜🩵

Great episode. Totally changed my opinion on JG after this. Used to think he was outspoken, elitist and over opinionated but thought he came across superbly during this interview. He clearly knew how to get a tune out of some of teams. Not sure if age has softened him but found him really enjoyable to listen to. Well done all in this episode.

There are a lot of takes from this podcast of football back in the early 2000’s that have carried forward into football now & the Premier League/FA/EFL should have done more about it to make football better instead of allowing for the mess that we’re dealing with now!! From Deadly Doug’s 2nd in command turning up at Wycombe’s hotel on the evening of a match to tell Gregory that they want him instead of approaching Wycombe first & making their interest know, for Villa/Gregory to then bleat about Man Utd tapping Dwight Yorke up!! We still constantly hear of players being lined-up for potential transfers to other clubs & that they’ve already accepted x-amount in wages yet a transfer fee seemingly hasn’t been agreed, so how has any personal terms been agreed? And yet nothing is done about it! And then when John Gregory walks into Derby & they are £30m in debt & struggling to 10-15 years later & they are in an even worse state!! Why haven’t the footballing authorities been much stricter & kept a closer eye on the clubs finances?!? And this doesn’t just go for Derby but Portsmouth, Wigan, Charlton, Birmingham & Bolton (and I’m sure there are others) that have a fairly recent history of having dodgy owners & finances!! Why isn’t something brought in to protect these clubs better so that they can’t go into debt, especially so soon after they’ve dealt with a previous problem. Maybe if stricter rules were put in place it could have helped their long term prospects, the football authorities have a responsibility to everything involved with a football club, the staff, the supporters & the wider community!! We will be losing a lot more clubs soon.

Say what you want about Doug Ellis but he lived and loved Aston Villa. At the time he sold the club to Randy Lerner, Villa were one of the last Presenter League clubs to not be in any debt. Contrast that to now where the club no longer owns it's own training crowd or stadium. A historic ground like 'Villa Park' and Villa is now merely a tenant at the mercy of vulture capitalists. And it's incredible how Gregory misremembers history seemingly always in his own favour. He was accused of bullying and misleading his players at Derby. A consultant said of Craig Burley's treatment that his injuries were mismanaged to such an extent Derby were fortunate not to have been sued for "medical negligence, medical incompetence and human rights violation" with Gregory apparently demanding Burley was "beasted" at training when his injury was still at large. Perhaps he should look at that sort of thing as well as turning up on TV news at St James' Park applying for the Newcastle job whilst still Villa manager (and failing to get the job), in addition to going to the press and painting Ellis as addled and stuck in a "time warp"; those sorts of things tend to linger in the memory of future employers. That said being accused of a human rights violation may explain his time in Israel *drops mic.
