He sure does an amazing job. He is thorough and thoughtful. We love him and his wife and daughter too. We found the faience items at one couples stand and it was so reasonable….. we couldn’t resist. 😊😅😊 Our alarm system works great. We love the little monsters. The old wires you've been running on 😱 my god, that's pretty scary stuff! Good to know you're in good hands with a pro who's paying attention and can do things in segments over time. I understand it can be frustrating to start a room and then put it on ice due to these issues needing fixing first, but alot better than having to make holes here and there after you wallpapered carefully. When it comes to electrical wiring, fire pipes/chimneys, and water pipes, safety comes first and getting it up to code and properly done is everything. Decor is the fun stuff. Lovely Faïence! ❤

I commend you, Stuart, for restraining Patrick from trying out the "kiddie rides."....😅😂😊 [Boy, what content that would have made if it had been true!] The problem with the larger flea markets is that they attract even more vendors peddling even more merchandise (aka junk) that doesn't meet one of your requirements (utilitarianism, tastefulness, or period appropriate). Imagine the lovely items you purchased had been located at the opposite end of the brocante. You may have given up your browsing for time restraints or exhaustion. Stuart and Patrick, you two have mastered patience since moving to France. You don't let obstacles perturbe you. You graciously accept that your "Grand Lady" has growing pains and needs her gerontologist, "Dr." JOHN, to diagnose and treat her ailments.

Good morning Patrick & Stuart, apart from a sound and sure foundation to any property, next is the electrical system/wiring. You do not know the damage until something goes wrong and you start investigating, it becomes a nightmare!! Now that you are well informed by John how the layout operates, and as he is now familiar with the wiring system, just allow him to carry on and do a proper job. I do not even wish to mention the wiring in our home, my husband said it's like a spaghetti junction up there!! I think re-wiring would be a good option for safety rules. One thing I can never understand is people's opinion about your home when they come visiting. They remark about the most ridiculous things. I love the objects you found at the Brocante, they are really lovely. Did you plant all the dahlias you bought Patrick?, you did not show, you know when the first flush begins to look poorly, you can cut them down to the ground level, start feeding and watering and they will give you a second performance. Unfortunately you will then have to lift them as it could become too wet and the tubers will rot. Until next time, do take care, many blessings, Elize

If you haven’t already encountered it and supposing that you ever get the time, you should read Peter Mayle’s “A Year in Provence”. A very funny and interesting account of the trials and tribulations of renovating in France. In addition, it’s a humorous look at the people and places he meets in everyday life and of restaurants and food, lots and lots of food!!!! It’s one of my all time favourite reads.

Hi Stuart and Patrick, I totally get why it takes so long to do renovations in France. In 1984 I rewired my three-story, Queen Anne Victorian tearing out the old knob and tube and replacing it with Romex from roof to basement. I did have a licensed electrician install a new breaker box, as it was beyond my skill set, but I saved thousands doing the rest of the work myself. You are extremely fortunate to have John doing the work for you, he knows all the shortcuts and from what I've seen from your vlogs, he is quite the craftsman. I hope I can hire him or find someone equally qualified when we buy in France. As always a trip to a brocante rounds out the vlog. Mark & Scott

It truly is amazing that a fire has not yet occurred. That brocante was lovely. I remember that canal from other channels also. I am not surprised that you both have found an extended family in Tony and Jane. They really feel the same, I sm sure. My mom used to say that one can never have enough friends. I love the pieces you found at the brocante. Here in BC and Yellowknife, there are evacuations for fires. We are safe in Surrey. It is so sad to hear of people losing everything they own. My heart and thoughts and prayers go out to them. I continue to be on the mend. It is slow but sure. Hopefully soon I can increase my activity and prepare the garden for fall and winter. Hello sweetie. You’d really like John and Claire. The old wiring was, luckily, in those wood channels. That saved the chateau. We went to a Brocante that was huge. A whole medieval town was closed off for traffic. Nice finds there too….. love and miss you. ❤😊❤

I feel your pain, It took us 5 years to correct the electric in our 6 bedroom town house here in Provence, Nothing had been touched since the twenties, I know those wood strips and the silk covered wires!!!!!

Glad that you are able to fix and upgrade the electric system as it is a true safety issue. John is so calm. I know I would not have the patience to do all the work you have to do and live in a work zone as you are in many ways. That clock would drive me crazy. How old was the oldest house you renovated in the USA? Brocants are a fun diversion but I no longer want to be near so many people. Have you recently hurt your hand? I noticed the brace a few vlogs ago.

We are glad to have John working. 😊. We love the clock. And she is pretty much on time. ❤. We have 3 other chimes at the chateau and that’s where these clocks belong. The oldest house in the US was from 1896. Since we are usually completely removed from people here at the chateau, we enjoy seeing some new faces. Wrist is a chronic thing. Thank you😊

That is absolutely true. The very old buildings have issues newer buildings won’t heave yet. 😂. To bring this to modern standards is important before we wallpaper and decorate. John is perfect in making sure the cables are all behind walls and in the ceiling. The chateau will be modernised but look almost untouched. Thank you for a wonderful comment. 😂. Well, the original electricians worked here over 120 years ago and did what was state of the art. So we can’t blame them. 😮😊 It is not cheap to re-wire a chateau. So that why it hasn’t happened. And let’s look at it. It lasted 120+ years. It is actually pretty amazing ❤😊❤

I got trigger thumb by having to use pressure on the pliers whilst making fashion jewellery. I had a couple of cortisone injections but solved/minimised the problem by inserting the handle in thick rubber tubing used for insulation on hot water pipes. It gave such great cushioning for my thumb joint.💖

Good day Stuart and Patrick. It is quite a big job to replace the whole Chateau with new electrical wiring. Now one question please and this is, did'nt the previous owners of the Chateau provided you with an electrical sertificate that the electrical works must be and is in good condition? In my country it is compulsory that the seller provide the buyer with such a sertificate. The seller must get an electrician and pay him to examine the electrical works and if there is wrong wiring it must be repaired and the account is for the seller. How does it work in France?

The electrical is not necessarily an issue unless you open it up to move it, which we have to do. The old wiring was encased on the wall surfaced in tracking channels, and there is no way for anyone to know the condition of them until you rip open the channels and start taking them out.

So good the electrics getting update! Had the horrible experience of dodgy wiring that nearly burnt a house down i was renting years ago so was glad to see my current home had new wiring and new roof when i bought it .
