The day this song came out, I was with my ex in South Australia for a trip. I remember listening to this song while we were driving along the coast of Tazmania. It was chilly and the wind was blowing on our faces while the music was playing. It was surreal. This song made the trip surreal. Now we’re broken up because of long distance and the fact that we could not fly to each other. But I thank John for adding color to our trip. It’s an experience I will never forget.

Virgil Lewis lol not at all, War of My Life and Carry Me Away are polar opposites of one another. Carry me away has an ambient, lofty tone to it whereas woml really is about moving forward in life throughout all adversity and you really hear that. It’s almost like John was going through the motions in the first bit and ends with power and prowess, as if saying “I gotta keep going.” OP hit it perfectly with saying it sounds like Love on the Weekend. Even though I’m not a bit fan of either song, it’s evident John is in a better place in his life right now.

Its cause of the way John does the layering. Its deceptive at first, cause you cant hear it all on one listen (even john says he needs more than one listen to find out how he feels about a song) and he deliberately chooses singable melodies over listenable chord progressions. Its really nice the way he structures the song, and its no accident that it happens with many of his other jammers.

Exactly, and that's key to the song. Song seems to be all about slowly building background tension with decisions like teasing a guitar solo by only playing a few notes but not following through, and the harmony especially makes some subversive decisions. It's cool.
@lupang3355 жыл бұрын
I was actually thinking the exact same thing, haha. But I do remember him mentioning in an interview somewhere that he prefers to keep his songs as simple as possible, giving more room to be creative when he plays live.

The scary thing about streaming! I wish John allowed both version to exist on Spotify. Had a similar experience with Weezer :( We all have memories tagged to the previous mix. Feels as if someone went back in time to change how things played out and now all the memories we have journeying with the song feel "corrupted" in some way. Don't think one is better than the other. Just different flavours! The more the merrier! Don't think fans will complain having more JM around Bring back the original John!

Whatever you’re feeling/going through, John’s felt it, been there too, and has a melody for it. I taught myself guitar the past 20 years from learning Mayer tunes. I’ll be excited to hear his next record. It’s been so cool growing up with John. I’m 34 and used to call into my local radio in Cleveland requesting no such thing back when I was barely a teenager. Thank you John. We have a lot in common. Best compliment I’ve ever received is someone saying “the world needs a new John Mayer”. Without knowing how much I liked his music and guitar style. Man to be in a studio session.
