Maybe it’s just me, but in nearly 20 years of playing, I’ve never felt the need to make a custom gauge out of something that doesn’t already come in a pack. I use different gauges for every guitar I own but I’ve never wanted to interchange specific strings.

I probably agree with you. But sometimes I find 11s too heavy and 10s too light… so it’s useful to have a half way house. It depends on my mood more than anything 😂

I used to use nickel wound when I had a electric guitar with a piezo in the bridge. I didn't like straight electric strings cause the g string was not wound . So on acoustic sounds the unwound g string was tiny sounding. If I used acoustic strings the magnetic pickups would not reproduce the sound correctly due to the bronze wound. So it wound up being hybrid set. All nickel wound including the g string so you get both worlds using piezo and mags. Not sure if he uses a piezo but that was my experience.

I'd agree but Ernie Ball already has a ton of custom gauges compared to other brands like Elixir or Daddario so they make it easy to hunt for a specific string gauge setup lol. The Mega Slinky is arguably the same as these John Mayer strings and are $4 cheaper.
@NJFPV19 күн бұрын
@@ChikenComet Thanks for that tip. Yeah, the only difference is the bottom 3 are up by 1. 28, 38, 48 instead of 27, 37, 47... I'd bet even Mayer wouldn't know the difference...

As someone who has spent way to much time nerding out over string gauges, I really appreciate this video!

I’ve used 9s for decades. Recently popped 10s on my Strat. Works well. Popped 11s on my Tele which works great as that guitar was made to be played hard. I have a Thinline 72 Tele with 9s on that I don’t want to change yet as it is set up just right. I moved to 10s on my Starcaster which is great as 9s were too thin. Thinking about going to 11s on the Tonecaster as it’s a 12inch radius and very easy to bend strings.

To me, these feel like a perfect Eb string gauge. Normally, I use 11-48 or 11-52 for Eb, but have always wanted just slightly less tension for songs where I have to play fast (I like low action). E standard i'm usually fine with 10 or 10.5s however, so these might just do the trick there as well.

not really

@@sebg2086 Idk, I find them to be pretty great in Eb, and I can get the action lower on them than I normally can with 11s or 12s.

I’ve recently started using the Ernie Ball Hyper Slinky on my 25.5 scale guitars. 9 top / 8 bottom. It’s really sweet playing. I’ve always been a heavier gauge player and wanted to try something outside of my wheel house.

10s on everything since about 1990. There was a period of about 5 years where the band were super busy that I was using 11s but i fell back to 10s when the thrice-weekly workouts stopped.

I bought the Mega Sliky’s which are basically these Mayer strings but the 3 bass strings are 1mm thicker. I love them on a Strat

you mean 1 thousandth of an inch thicker?

I’ve tried these also. Maybe a little too close to 11s

I am enjoying them on my ultra Strat hss. I like the added resistance on the boomer bends.

D’Addario 10s on everything since I can remember . I bought a 3 pack to try on a couple of my hollow body guitars. I might throw a set on a strat. If I don’t like them who cares.

Have they affected the string setup on ur silver sky ? I have my silver sky setup perfectly and I’m worried they will effect it

You might have to tighten up the trem and/or truss rod a bit depending on the gauge you’re moving from.
