Tyler, who do you or your mods keep removing my comment?? Hope you love those strings.. In 2006 John Mayer made gross comments about Jennifer Love Hewitt, John claimed that he never got to have sex with Hewitt due to food poisoning. Many believed he was objectifiying her, he issued a (bad) public apology, saying “It was really me making fun of myself….I’m a wimp.” John Mayer dated Jennifer Aniston around 2008 and after the breakup, he made sure everybody knew that they had split. These comments reportedly really upset Aniston. In 2009, Mayer “jokingly” threatened to “forcefully sodomize” an interviewer’s editor. Vulture’s Christianna Ablahad intreviewed John Mayer. Ablahad said that President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to him prematurely, John stated, “I love you, you’re beautiful, but shut your fucking mouth….You're not building a journalistic career. You're making yourself look like a moron and you're not a moron.” He finished off the interview claiming that he would “forcefully sodomize” the editor. In 2010, he made several misogynistic comments in a Rolling Stone interview, claiming that he was looking to date a women with a “beautiful vagina”. Also in 2010, he had an interview with Playboy, calling ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson “sexual napalm” He even casually dropped the n-slur AND f slur in the interview. Oh and he compared his dick to white supremacist David Duke. John Mayer and Taylor Swift dated briefly in 2009. Taylor’s song “Dear John”, is reported to be about Mayer, Mayer then slammed Taylor Swift, calling the song “cheap songwriting.” I personally find this ironic because he has a song literally titled “Why You No Love Me” that was published in 2021. The relationship between Swift and Mayer was highly publicized as she was only 19 and he was 31-32. In 2018, he implied that he would never refer to himself as a feminist, "My take is less about feminism and more about the issue of nomenclature, specifically how reductiveness of language can turn people off from noble and vital causes," he wrote. That’s not everything he’s done but I think it’s enough to where you can see my point. To recap, John Mayer is a scumbag and many people, including myself dislike him, and for good reason.

Last time I went to GC I wanted to try the Pro II tele deluxe and the kingfish tele deluxe. Kingfish was in the top of the wall so I had help to get it down. After 20 minutes of trying to play it the security tag went off 3 times. They either came over and took the guitar behind the register to reset it or I had to wait in line while it was beeping. They had the pro II in the back for whatever reason so I switched to that after someone got it for me. Same issue with the security tag going off. The same guy has now messed with the tags 5 separate times. Instead of just taking it off and letting me try out the guitars, he just took the pro II back into the back of the store leaving me empty handed and then they got really busy and no one else was available to help me.

My daughter has a syndrome that makes her have muscle weakness and finger issues so I put 8s on her Tele. WHEEEE!!! Is that fun! I find that playing 8s makes my playing better when I'm back my usual 9s. I love Tyler's video of him trying 7s and 8s.
@DamienBonoАй бұрын
Yeah, playing is easier with lighter strings, I am not a great guitarist, so I need all the help I can get. When I was younger, and playing often, I used to run 10's minimum, But I realised later some of the reason that I preferred them was simply my failing to setup the guitar correctly. I am older and play much less often now, once I got better at setting up guitars the benefits of my improved playing with lighter strings wins hands down. I generally aim for a specific range in tension, I prefer 8 - 9's depending on scale length, and tuning. I usually bump up to 9's minimum for the shorter scale length guitars (like the Les Paul) or for the guitars that I tune down 1/2 a step (Would go 10's on a short scale length, tuned down guitar). Also I much prefer the hybrids on some guitars with fatter bass strings, as they get a bit thin in the standard sets. I find it much easier to get intonation correct with hybrids, they provide a nice balance when trying to use thin sets, and retain enough tension to help keep action lower. First thing I did when I got my PRS CE was put on 9's but struggled to get intonation right on the low E, it can really get close to the adjustment limit and end up battling with bridge float angle. I now use hybrids for many of my guitars to make life easier, although I find standard 8's work well on the Ibanez super strats. Funniliy enough I often stick with 9's on the Strats, I have slightly less desire to drop to 8's, but it's borderline for me. Personally I would not even consider these John Mayer strings, I would size them to your needs. One last bonus tip, I had one Ibanez guitar that would feedback badly with any distortion (when all other guitars were fine - even after backing off the volume knob didn't help much) I tried lowering the pickups etc.. I assumed I had an issue with one the pickups going microphonic (But happened on all of them?), so I avoided playing it quite a bit, finally, simply replacing the strings (and running through a full setup, as you do) solved the problem, which was a nice surprise.

Great video. For the ears the heavier gauge strings do add loads of tone to the sound, but only if they are comfortable in your strong hands, so when you man-handle the strings a bit it only adds to the killer tone. Case in point, SRV. Then there is light gauge for the rest of us mere mortals. And, we have amps and pedals. So its really whats comfortable for you is the right gauge.

I found the tone difference during Neon very much noticeable.. But I wouldn't say I personally prefer the Silvers. During the Neon comparison, the Silvers' sound is more clearly articulated, almost as hearing multiple voices rather than a totality, which I personally don't like. During the distorted test, I do really like them, which makes me think that, without a direct comparison, the difference in clean might not be as noticeable as I first thought. Would love to see more direct comparisons (also distorted, strumming chords etc) :)

I struggled to pick out any tonal difference between the two string packs although the picking sounded more consistent and even across the strings with the Mayer set which could be caused just by the difference in the perceived 'comfort' of playing with them giving you more confidence while playing the song.

I’ve gone through plenty of strings over the years. When I first started playing guitar, the Ernie Ball Cobalts were the hot thing. They’re pretty cool, definitely different feeling. Once I started getting a lot better at guitar the M-Steels had come out and I loved the tone of those, but I had the issue of always breaking or popping them. Enter D’Addario NYXL. They were awesome, not quite the tone I had with M-Steel but they were WAY more durable. Eventually Ernie Ball came out with the Paradigms and I haven’t looked back. They are so durable and sound so good. You can throw anything at those and they’ll take it. I prefer: Skinny Top Heavy Bottom for shorter scales Regular Slinkys for 25.5” and Beefy Slinkys for D Standard / Drop C
@slide8570Ай бұрын
I"ll give you a quick tip...if you are breaking strings focus on the saddles. I'm currently using Ernie Ball strings..used to use D'Addario because my friends dad worked for Sylvania at the time and they drew the wire for D'Addario, and my buddies dad would supply us with T shirts and strings..fun memories, but, I digress, back to the saddles. Get some Graphtech string saver saddles. Those will certainly extend the life of your strings. In my mind, it's always friction that causes string breakage, and years ago I wrote to the CEO of Fender guitars about the mods I made to my guitar, compound radius, beveling the bridge plate where the strings pass through...etc. But I found that the Graphtech string saddles, I put those on, and no more broken strings, even with 9/64" up pull on the old whammy! They don't effect the sound..they just work because they remove the friction of steel on steel saddles! Might set you back 40 bucks if you are playing a strat style guitar..but worth the investment. I only play 8 to 38 gauge strings on my strat styles, and 11's on my slide guitars. Graphtech saddles..try em out!

Not quite true. But partly in some cases. I worked for a musical instrument distributor for many years and during my time I was given tours round both the Rotosound factory in Kent in England and also the Jim Dunlop one in Benicia, California. They're VERY different strings too. I quite liked the "smoother" Rotosounds but the Dunlops always felt "sharp" on my finger tips to me. I also found the Dunlops life span very short too compared to other brands. However, it is true a lot of products are sourced from the same manufacturing plants. Many guitars, especially entry level, of fierce rival companies are made in the exact same factories in the Far East as each other. As are the strings they come as standard with.

That's so funny I was in Nashville this weekend recording at Blackbird Studios. I hung out at Carter's, and Gruhns for quite a while. Would have been cool to meet you and bullshit about guitar! Great City of music! Shout-out to Carter's Vintage Guitars and to Gruhns Guitars (who actually make their own custom guitars) they are both must-sees when in Nashville!

Oh and I totally forgot to mention I purchased a set of John Mayer strings yesterday haha!!!

I've always played EB Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom's. I think they sound amazing, but they feel amazing a half step down. Those piano strings on the low E and A strings are tough to work in standard tuning.

I like my D'Adarrio XS 10-46

Really great playing here.

I put the 7's on my Sterling and they don't sound different that any other gauge. They ARE a pleasure to play on. Just can't get too nuts with the low tunings.
@kristopherk5454Ай бұрын
Too nuts? With 7’s I don’t know how you can even do 1/2 step down.

Ah! The good old days when I had a local guitar shop. Now it’s 25 miles to the nearest, and I’ve no idea after that.

Personally, I love D'Addario 9.5's on my Strat - They always feel silky smooth

9.5s are a great set. I got them on my Les paul
@speedfreakjive8843Ай бұрын
@@arsenalfanrichi Don't know what it is, but 9.5s are the magic gauge on Les Pauls.

I don’t know if it’s the strings, but that is some killer tone.

Listening through a stereo system, I liked the regulars more. The mayer slinkies sound really phat, which is an amazing tone actually but not what I’d be looking for when playing a single coil Strat.

So I was forced to call Guitar Center Nashville today! Thanks bud haha 😂

10.5’s have been around. David Gilmore has a signature GHS set that are gauged that way but not with the lighter bottoms. Also, Jimi didn’t play those gauges but he did favor really light wound strings with standard gauge plains. D’Addario makes 10.5 sets, and DR strings, too. Mayor has played regular Slinky 10’s but I read once that like so many players, when he is touring he builds strength playing every night for two hours and ends up going with 11’s as his fingers beef up, to get the same feel he had with 10’s with weaker fingers. Maybe he split the difference? I would bet he has 11’s on the shorter scale PRS guitars he plays with Dead & Co., and on any Gibsons he occasionally plays.

Jimi played 8s mostly, if memory serves me right, Which is debatable as I'm over 50 and have a teenage daughter and that's almost never good for brain.

My only complaint……stopping that jam at the end too soon! I was in the groove, right there. Great vid.
@1683cliftonАй бұрын
What a damn fine pickers riff to jam too. And as always I was entertained

The key to selling a five dollar set of strings for ten, is having John Mayer's name on them. The scale and tuning your playing them in, will probably make more difference than the gauge. I'm thinking they'd actually work better on 24.5 or .594 scale PRS models. Maybe 25" inch scale too. But not so much on 25.5" scale guitars, where 9.5 gauge sets would be the way to go. I'm I wrong? Peace!
