I spoke with one for almost an hour when Mountain Lion we're starting to be reported in New York. It had been over 100 years since they had been seen, and he had heard all the reports. ENCON is a real resource to anyone who loves spending time in the Wild, and they are always generous about sharing their expertise and knowledge!

I live in a quiet town in San Diego CA & me & my friends used to fish at this creek deep in the canyons. One day we went there to fish & we ran into 5-6 gangbangers. They appeared to be using our fishing hole as an encampment. All were tattooed from head to toe, one was bathing naked in the creek, one was sleeping & the others were just milling around. When they saw us, they all stood up & glared at us. And the worst part is, ALL OF THEM BRANDISHED GUNS AT US. One had a hunting rifle & the other had handguns. We were only like 16 at the time so we ran off because we were scared shitless. We later got word that the police took them all away in handcuffs because they harassed another group of kids & they called the cops. Turns out they all were wanted in LA county & they were hiding out from the cops.

When I was a kid, we lived near a expansive forest that had some abandoned mining facilities and mines. There was a group of drug addicts that frequently camped out in them because the area was inaccessible except by foot, dirt bike, or horse. This group had a dirt bike that was really too small for an adult, but sometimes they would show up at a gas station with one driving and the other carrying their groceries. At different times some of them had odd jobs, but I guess they mostly got money by stealing from people that lived nearby. One night my parents had left for about an hour and the dog started barking. I knew that it might be one of the druggies foraging so I chained the dog behind the house, grabbed a shotgun and a spotlight, and sneaked over toward one of our outbuildings. After a few minutes, I heard someone rummaging through a toolbox and then saw a flashlight turn on and back off quickly. I set the spotlight down facing them, flipped it on, and pointed the shotgun at the burglar. His eyes were so big that I could have given him a retinal exam. He dropped everything, including a bag with the tools he'd already swiped and his flashlight. He started running toward the side door and tripped on the axle for a tractor attachment. He got up and was furiously limping toward the door. I grabbed the spotlight and took off after him. He went out the door and toward the treeline, still limping like crazy. Just as he got to the treeline, I shot the shotgun up into the air and he launched right into a pile of wild blackberry vines (which have large thorns) and then disappeared. That guy must have been a mess limping and cut to pieces by blackberry thorns. I kinda felt sorry for him. I'm sure he got medicated after returning though.
