Why not? A swear word never harmed anybody. I find myself swearing way more than I normally do when I'm on the ice, but it's not like there's some pervasive culture about it. Torts (who I don't like, but don't mind here) is just trying to get the boys to get their head's out of their ass, and the swearing adds an impact to it to try to jolt them back to life. What do you hear after? They start clapping, and someone says "Cmon boys, cmon boys!" They got pumped up and ready to get back into the game, so it clearly had the effect he intended. Hell, I had a coach in fucking Bantam Rostered Select who would give more brutal talks than this and swear more, and yet none of us were little bitches about it. He was kind of a dick, but he would only do it when we deserved it (not taking the game seriously, doing individual shit, taking dumb retaliation penalties, etc...) In the heat of the moment during an intense competition, people are going to use more coarse language. I think it's kind of ridiculous to act like there's anything wrong with it.

jetshockey5 Say what you want about him, but he's a cup winner in Tampa, and he helped build NYR into what they are today. He's a good coach. Should have never coached the Nucks. That team is done. The window is rapidly closing. They'll be the next shitty Canadian team. I actually expect the Oilers to surpass them this year, if McDavid is as advertised. Torts should have taken the job with Dallas when it was offered. That's a team that's more fitting to his style. He does better with younger teams.

Vancouver is as soft a team as there is (STUPID mistake dealing Kesler--one of the few guys with sand) and they'll be bottom-feeders very soon. Torts is a terrific coach. +Chrismotionless 1234 Yeah because Jeff Blashill is really doing that much better right now? Just saying,....But honestly, more of it is Holland's fault. The Wings could miss the playoffs in his first season as coach since like 1992? And if they make it, they could be one and done anyways.....John Tortorella is coaching in a very difficult situation after a disastrous 0-7 start and the Jackets have been 1-2 games under .500 since he took over as coach. ......There was a time when the Red Wings used to be able to wipe the floor with the Sabres and Blue Jackets, and that come and gone.....now the Sabres will be wiping the floor with Detroit for years to come especially when Datsyuk and Kronwall retire within two years and their buffoon GM Ken Holland does nothing and signs another Stephen Weiss and makes another blockbuster trade for Kyle Quincey...Holland needs to be fired for the better of that team, he has done nothing to help their declining situation in Detroit. All he has done is sit on winger prospects, that he couldhave moved for the defenseman he needs and sign band-aids in the offseason. As a Sabre fan, Good luck to Columbus next season with Torts,..... the team he has there is a lot tougher and fits what he will want to do better than when he was in Vancouver, where it was a disaster and not a match.

He'd be perfect for your favorite team. The Flyers have always found a way to stick it to the Rangers (by far and away my favorite team in all of sports for 25 years). You eliminated us in 1974 because not only did you have skilled players and guys who can fight, but Snider's team epitomized what N. American hockey has always been about since the days of Eddie Shore. He learned that from the beat downs the Flyers took from the Blues before the Broad Street Bullies became the Broad Street Bullies. The Flyers wore out the Rangers physically. Enforcers like Dave Shultz and Gary Dornhoefer made other teams scared to the point where they didn't even have to use their fists all the time. The threat of using them would do. Teams like the Rangers feared them under Emile Francis. You guys won another Cup in 1975 before 2 teams lead by better coaches than Francis (Bowman and Arbour) realized it wouldn't simply take good goal tending and finess (as Francis believed would wear teams out and win a Cup) to dethrown the Broad Street Bullies. It took a combination of skill, size, physical play, and guys who weren't afraid of Shultz and Dornhoefer. That's why the Rangers (despite having hall of fame players at each position) never won a Cup in the 70's or 80's for that matter. Players like Larry "big bird" Robinson, Dough Risebrough, Bob Nystrom, and Clarke Gillies were not afraid of Shultz and Dornhoefer and the Flyers knew it (as do you probably). My NY Rangers never caught on to this concept until 94'. As far as fighting goes it's not only about using your fists, it's the threat of using them if the opponent wants to intimidate and scare your team's most skilled players.

I agree. Mike Keenan was harsh on players in a similar manner but was run out of the league. Just look at Chris Pronger's transformation in St. Louis. All due to Iron Mike. I like this speech. Torts didn't make an example of one player to scapegoat or one particular play that could be attributed to a defensive pairing. He just sounded a call to step up and get back in the game, but with more expletives. He's not out there having a good kid rate players or what Babcock was doing...he's just asking more from his players.

So this is what Johnny the Tortoise is like? This dude would make the Leafs a reality show, definitely a good pick if Carlyle ever gets fired. Honestly, someone needs to serve as a tough and strict discipline officer in their organization, I would personally love to hear of this guy screaming down the locker room in the ACC over some of their ugly games. Honestly, some of us don't like having strict teachers, but then you realize that they take your success seriously and you start to listen, then they start praising you for working hard and point you out as a good example. I mean really, it's nearly been 50 damn years for the Leafs, enough is enough, it's time to rebuild this team, even if it means having Torts take the bench.

@bobtwichew31035 жыл бұрын
I definitely think it works for a while. Especially when the team is winning. It has to wear on you after a while. I couldn't take that every night.
@jeffreyval96655 жыл бұрын
@@bobtwichew3103 yeah kind of what i said. I dont know how old u are but if u remember Mike Keenan he was the same way and coaches like these are really great for a few years then players and management get sick of them then they go to another team. Coaches like this get results but they are constantly going to different teams. Peter Lavulette ( killed the spelling of that ) is also kind of like that.
@bobtwichew31035 жыл бұрын
Oh I'm old enough. I remember Keenan coaching the Flyers before he coached The Blueshirts to the Cup and the bolt to St. Louis. Did you ever see Mike Keenan and Jeff Golillie in the same place?
@mondoseguendo61133 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if that’s a good comparison. Keenan’s way was to get the players angry at him as a form of motivation; Torts’ approach is more tough, but fair. Even though Torts was yelling he wasn’t demeaning his guys or belittling them. He was just being very matter of fact with them.

It can be quite tough on the team to play under him, but I think this is one style of coaching and it's completely valid: getting the best out of your team by never being satisfied with what you have. This is how you keep players going even when they are tired and hurt and just want to rest.

+Zack K Seth Jones-Murray and Werenski will be a very good blue line for years to come, all young and all will fit what Torts will wanna do. And up front they have some good forwards I really like, Jenner, Atkinson, Wennberg, Saad, Dubinsky, and even Hartnell can still go at his age. They got some really good prospects in Milano, and Bjorkstrand which hopefully they can contribute in a couple years. All they need is that elite Jack Eichel type franchise centerman which hopefully they can get in the draft if they win the lottery.

Or the GM's trades at the deadline did, it looked for quite a while that Columbus wouldn't even make the playoffs.

@@C3lloman Weren't they in like 3rd or 4th in their conference on January 2019? They were definitely a team that was inside the bubble throughtout the year so I don't know what you're referring to by them not making it. Maybe popular perception at the beginning of the year would have been that they wouldn't make it. The Columbus GM went all in by acquiring Duchene and Dzingel because they were considered a playoff team at that time.

A lot of coaches are that way nowadays. If you want to coach a team, you have to be tough on your players and get them to listen to you. The main thing you need is a good game plan. Tortorella always had a great game plan and if something went wrong, he would do whatever it took to fix it.

I love these kind of speeches. Yes, Torts is yelling and berating, but only because he’s trying to bring out the best in his players and that he’s communicating he believes in them. These kind of speeches can turn the tide. I wish my employer would get pissed like this, because I would like to think to take it as a sign they actually fucking care in a constructive manner, like Torts here.
