humiliating the captain publicly wouldn't go over well with players on any team. torts eventually wears out his welcome, because he's exhausting. As for his record: His career win-loss record is only .548 He had one great season and cup, but that is an exception. his desire to win is overtly on display, but his career results are a bit over mediocre.

Staal is playing relatively small minutes for a Dman also so that backs up my statement of him being in the team for the leadership.

From everything I've heard Torts constantly updates his players with where they stand in his mind and how they need to play and if they don't adjust he takes action so I don't have a problem with Torts at all I think he's a fantastic coach for a rebuilding team to instill some good qualities and work ethics for when the next coach comes in after Torts 2-4 years as HC

The thing is that's any coach. The same thing happens to nice guys. Players want him to be tougher. I think it's more human nature apart from being good cop bad cop.. even dynasties has issues with coaches.. Brady/Bellichek etc.. I think winning covers up most things though. And torts has an absolutely insane record. Jon Cooper/Brind'Amour as well and they are notorious for ice time as well (especially cooper). This stems back to Norfolk (where I live)

brilliant - except it defies any validity . if you look at Tortarella - he does get a lot out of players - if you look at the teams at the end - it is nuclear winter - he rides all the talented ones for all they have and by the end it is worse than a tire fire - that has happened everywhere he has been - so the idea of rebuilding is insane with him

Tortorella is the coach. He's only doing what is best for the team. Sean Couturier is sour grapes. If Couturier was playing well, do you think Torts would scratch him? If anything, Torts has been consistent throughout his career. Why are we taking Couturier's agents word over Torts? Look at the NYR, it took an injury for Trouba to get scratched to prove what everyone has known all along, Trouba is more of a liability than an asset.

However, it is certainly understandable how he can wear on players and his one size fits all does not take into account different personalities. However, you know what your getting in this coach. I agree with you to an extent. As a Ranger fan, I've dealt with Tort's shenanigans and it's exactly what you said. He usually makes the right moves, but the lack of communication is an issue! Dubs was with the Rangers when Torts was the coach and he knows. When there is a lack of communication there is a lack of trust. Plain and simple. And when your players don't trust you, you lose the locker room and you start losing games. Torts is known as a hard coach, but sometimes you gotta show some love and you always need to communicate,

Sean Couturier is no Daniel or Henrik Sedin, the twins did everything that John Tortorella asked of them, not once did they get bench for a full game. Many Philadelphia Flyers fans have detested John Tortorella since he was hired a couple of years ago. They accused him of favouring veteran players, and they all thought that Torts would rather put an aged vet in the lineup while benching the prospects. That has not been the truth at all. In fact, most of the team is very young, and it's the young players who've been doing quite well throughout this season. The older players , such as Staal-Atkinson-and Couturier have spent some time sitting in the players suite at the games rather than waste shifts on the ice. Flyers fans have a tendency to view their beloved, nicknamed players through orange tinted glasses, and they view them all as stars in the league. Sean Couturier, who was recently elevated to the title of captain on the team by John Tortorella, is now spending time on the bench. Even though the Flyers are very close to being eliminated from the wild card, Torts is sitting the captain because he has been more than a skate slow within recent action, he has not scored a goal in a very long time, and his contribution has been lacking. Couturier denies any knowledge why he's being benched but the records don't lie. Torts has said since being hired by the Flyers that if a player is not contributing to the team, he will be benched. Torts has also said that he doesn't care how much the player is being paid, nor does he care whether the benched player is a fan favourite or not. The response from the Flyers fans about the Couturier benching has been typical, the fans are all ready to fire Tortorella, and they're dead wrong as usual. I love that Couturier is being benched, back when the former captain of the team was not contributing to the team he should have been benched, yes that's right I'm referring to Giroux. The Flyers fans fall in love with these guys, but Torts is like Scrooge when it comes to whether you're contributing or not. I'd rather have a Scrooge as a coach, rather than a coach that's going to be too soft. Couturier needs to get a case of tissues and stop whining about whether he's on the active roster. He should work his ass off in practice, end his whining and show that he's ready to lead rather than whimper. The offseason trades should include players like Atkinson and Couturier.

Seems like Torts is great at taking an underachieving team and turning them around. Possibly the best ever at doing that. But he seems to also have a hard time keeping the locker room behind him, long term. It also seems some players just can't deal with his style. Obviously a player that just doesn't put in the work doesn't deserve the ice time, but a great coach can motivate more players than Torts seems to be able to, or want to. IMO, a GREAT coach can work with different personalities differently. That being said, I don't follow the Flyers, so I'm not at all familiar with Couturier's recent play. It's entirely possible he deserved to sit to get the message.

The Flyers may have the least amount of talent in the entire league. There are no personalities to work through. They have to play a team game that is better than the sum of ther parts. If they don't, they 'll lose whether they like the coach or not. Once upon a Time down here in Tampa before the lightning won a cup there was a coach that benched his number one starter Vinny lecavalier. I believe Vinny brought it up in his Hall of Fame speech. No one player is above the team. No safe spaces. I'm with Torts.

The guy missed a year and a half with injury is it really shocking to anyone that he might not have as much stamina as guys used to the routine? He had a hot start and looked like the player of old. And then he cooled way down. The speed of the game is catching up to him. He's not used to playing full season anymore. And honestly with his rather constant injury status he's never been super used to it. This happens to guys coming out of the NCAA and Junior hockey all the time. He's hit a wall. He's still working hard and trying to play through it. Maybe he'll get there. Maybe he won't. I'd think he'll probably be more in proper long term condition next year.

That’s absolutely what it looks like from the stats. I think that he doesn’t have enough in the tank to maintain his level of play. However… However, if that’s the case (and I think it is), what they should be doing is 1.) communicating with the player, and 2.) managing his days off rather than his ice time in games. Just saying to him, “look, I know you’re a player, I know you’ve dedicated to this team, but you don’t have the legs right now to play how you want to play. For the next couple of weeks, you’ll only play in games where you have two days off between games, and you’ll be working to get your conditioning back up to where you need it to be for your game.” Playing him in back-to-back games but with reduced minutes in the games is literally getting the worst of both worlds.

To me it’s always seemed like the star players with mediocre work ethics and a big egos don’t like him. Never heard any player in a ”workhorse” role criticize him. Personally I love how Torts holds his teams together with hard work being in a crucial role in his system. I've watched every game this season ( well, and since he was a rookie ) : the scratch was warranted; his play has noticeably tailed off from the first half of season. He was out of hockey almost 2 years. Like a college or junior player his body has to adjust again to the NHL grind. Doesn't mean he's finished; Bergeron and others similar have played at a high level well into their 30s. He needs a reset. Coots, I love ya, man. It appears yr first test as captain is upon you... It’s deeper than what you are stating. Coots has seen his ice time decline and been in Torts doghouse ever since he was named captain. Torts basically giving the middle finger to mgmt who wanted Coots named captain, not Torts. He deserved to be benched, same as Atkinson. What he's done for this Flyers team is nothing short of outstanding, turning them from a garbage team last year to top 3 in the Metro division this year. A coach isn't supposed to be your friend and make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, he's supposed to get the best out of you. If this scratch makes Couturier reflect on his play and come back into the lineup a better player, then its the right thing to do, no matter what he feels about it.

I'm on the Flyers' side in this. Torts has been telling Coots for weeks that he has to "be better". Coots has responded by continuing to play poorly. Any honest hockey observer would agree, Coots has hit a wall; not surprisingly considering his back injury & not playing for almost 2 yrs. After being forced to watch the franchise crash & burn for the last 15 yrs under Holmgren & Scott, it has been a great pleasure watching this team under Tortorella, who demands effort & accountability. Maybe Coots is having a little trouble playing in that environment, since it's 180⁰ change from what he was used too? And Coots should tell his agent to STFU, 'cause the crap doesn't play well with Phila. sports fans!

His value decreased due to decreased pronunciation so Torts did this to send a message, you are better than this, you can do better and you are expected to do better. I side with Torts! He is a Captain and expected to be a leader and example. Captains are held to a higher standard. It comes with the territory of being a Captain. Torts loves and respects his players. As a parent you love your children, but still correct undesirable behavior, if you don’t, you aren’t doing your job!

I agree one’s status shouldn’t absolutely guarantee a spot in the lineup every night, but you’re forgetting to factor in that when Torts does stuff like this, it’s largely (though not strictly) for personal attention, as with other antics of his. He is a very insecure man. A coach’s approach matters to me. A coach’s character matters to me. Torts is too self-absorbed. As for the win… they also won a lot of games during the season and a half Coots was out of the lineup. Saying that scratching Coots “worked out” is a bit misleading. It’s not as though the lineup change was necessarily THE reason for the win. We can't retroactively can’t go back in time and KNOW that they wouldn’t have played as well with him in the game.

He pissed off Coots and probably the rest of the team. Coots is highly respected in that room and that seemed like a bit of an f you game. Definitely worked in the short term, but if Torts loses the respect of those guys, all the work and improvement doesn’t really matter. Hopefully we see Coots back against Caroline.
