Avatar is an "Epic Romantic Adventure", and there used to be a lot of them, it was a legitimate genre before our modern era. Captain America 1 I think is a great film that really excels at that kind of narrative and is also the kind of movie making that gets MCU lovers to yawn, they don't like romantic adventures and think that we shouldn't either.

Star Wars, the Top Gun sequel, and most money-printing comic book films also contain very basic stories full of well-worn tropes. It doesn't matter if it is well executed. "I've seen this story before..." is criticism without merit. Literally any story you've read, watched, or played through has been before countless times.

I think 2 billion today is stretching it. Honestly don’t understand the skeptical people though. The first one really delivered. Also, any movie we see today is based on something that has happened or a movie we haven’t seen. To pretend our ideas are “original and nobody ever thought of it” is really kinda silly. And if we happen to come by something like that it’s extremely rare.

Saw it yesterday. Very good movie. I can see why people feel it tops the first Avatar. I still love the journey of BPWF but AV2 had a final battle scene I wish BPWF had. It's a crazy experience seeing this slow to mellow pace story and world building and then boom 3rd act just went full steam ahead. No spoiler but it was like James Cameron made a sequel to Avatar and Titanic all in one film🤣. Good family film without coming off as one. Go see it but use the bathroom first!

the thing that studios need to understand is that people no longer want to go to the theatre to watch a movie they could easily see for fraction of the price from the comfort of their homes. If you want people to come to the theatre then you need to release movies that are viewed as an experience. The movies need to be a visual spectacle AND have a good story that appeals to everyone. I think James Cameron understands this very well and thats what makes him so great

Just because a movie is the same as the first doesn't mean it's bad. Look at Top Gun: Maverick, a movie that is the same as the first but did it better. That's what I expect from Avatar 2. Come on, James Cameron knows how to make sequels better than the first. You saw that with Aliens (which I just rewatched yesterday) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

This notation that a 3+ hour run time is a hinderance to box office is malarkey. Titanic was the highest grossing film until Avatar, (over 3 hours), Endgame over 3 hours, The Batman close to 3 hours made a pretty good penny this year. Is the movie great? Is it an event? Can you make it feel epic? That’s what matters not a run time

I re-watched the first film the other day and it's still absolutely fantastic. The biggest criticism people have of it is, "It's just Dances with Wolves in Space!" Well, okay, so it's a riff on a movie that won 'Best Picture'. So, what's the problem? Star Wars did the exact same thing in that it took a down to earth Kurasawa movie and shoved it in space.

I work at a movie theater. Don't be surprised if the box office numbers are higher than expected. Disney is almost entirely showing it on premium or 3d formats. We aren't allowed to show it in standard format. You will struggle to see this movie for less than $15. It doesn't have to get even close to the same audience count as avatar, it will make bank anyway.

@charoleawood

Yes, I agree. Avatar borrows from a lot of things, not just Fern Gully but also Dune. Dune itself is heavily inspired by (if we wanted to be snarky we'd say "derivative of") Lawrence of Arabia. We also have have Last of the Mohicans published by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826. As for Pocahontas, the tall tale --- to say nothing of the real story of the woman herself --- has been around in American pop culture for centuries. If the MCU gets to mine characters and tell the same superhero stories over and over again (collect the "infinity stones" to beat the big red badguy? That's "good" storytelling?) because those heroes were penned by Stan Lee half a century ago then it should also be ok to dip into the well of epic romantic adventures. There were also a LOT of movies about jungle adventures in the 80s and 90s and represent their own subgenre, one that had disappeared by 2009. There were several Jungle Books and Tarzans, there was Mosquito Coast, The Medicine Man, The Emerald Forrest, Gorillas in the Mist, Rambo, Congo, George of the Jungle, etc etc etc. There was a larger concern about the destruction of rainforest habitat back then but now we don't seem to really care, it's like people think that it's already gone and we'd rather have grazing space for our mcdonalds cattle so we can have a bite to eat on our way to yet another superhero flick. Anyway, Fern Gully was already drawing from all of these inspirations, inspirations Cameron would have had without the existence of Fern Gully. I only wish people would be familiar with the damn source material rather than to mindlessly go, "Nuyh, it's just Fern Gully." As for Dances With Wolves, everybody should just watch it because it's superb. I still like Avatar more.

Yep. Movies are not what they're about, they're how they're about it. If the end all be all of judging movies is plot originality, you're not going to like most movies. I do think it's a shallow look at things, and there's a lot more to movie making than overall plot details or a few tropes used in a movie. There's cinematography, dialogue, editing, pacing, music, visuals , action scenes, acting, themes, imagery, symbolism, values,etc... Nearly none of those aforementioned things are dependent on the overall plot synopsis.

Avatar may be a "simple" plot, however there are many deeper themes that people perhaps acknowledge on a deep level but aren't aware. Yes, James Cameron absolutely is great at "romantic" movies as Robert says. His movies do inspire a sense of awe and wonder, something that transports you to a different life you wish you could have or at least experience. This is something pretty rare in most movies these days. It's child like imagination, the Reading Rainbow theme song, the Eyewitness theme song. I don't think it's a coincidence shots of Pandora often feel like a well made nature documentary such as Planet Earth (Planet Pandora).

Its the future alright. Does it mean its a better experience? Depends on the movie. The majority of cgi-dependent movies are turds. With the legendary Jurassic Parks and Avatars in-between. My opinion personally, it SUCKS. I want my practical action set pieces of the golden age of 80's-90's. Screw CGI (and the overwhelming reliance of it).

The story of the first movie wasn't all that compelling, but it didn't need to be. The movie succeeded on spectacle and transporting the audience to another planet for two hours or so, which is no small feat. Story is rarely a major selling point for major blockbluster films. The Top Gun sequel is a recent example and the first Star Wars film is a famous example from the past. Arguably the great majority of money-printing comic book films also fall under the category of films with very basic stories and well-worn tropes that succeed because they transported the audience to another universe for a couple hours and wowed them with well executed spectacle. Films like the Dark Knight or the Joker that also had great or thought-provoking stories are very much an exception. If Avatar 2 has a story that wows it's audience too - great, but the depth of the story won't determine whether or not the film is a hit. It's just not a necessary component for this kind of film.

Amused me seeing people who rave about Maverick repeat the avatar-hate-meme about the story being basic. Maverick story is dumb as f. Absurdly unrealistic about every aspect of the Air Force and almost a beat for beat remake of the first + star wars trench run. But it is a f-ing great ride. I'd say the original Avatar, seen in good 3d theaters, was better than Maverick in story and experience. Great to hear this one at least matches it.

Actually James Cameron was on set for just about the entire shoot of "Piranha Part 2: The Spawning". Paull Goldin has already confirmed this & he should know since the actor was in the entire movie as apposed to just a few scenes. He said James, Lance, Tricia, were all great to work with & James handled things very professionally despite being fired ( twice ) & re-hired. Anyway I'm very excited for "Avatar: The Way Of Water". It will be a huge hit unless we end up with another health crisis in the weeks ahead. Nice & enthusiastic discussion.

True Lies is one of the few remakes that turned out better than the original, called "La Totale" by Claude Zidi. Arnold Schwarzenegger taking over the role orignally camped by Thierry Lhermiite and Jamie Lee Curtis completely overshadowing Miou Miou in the role of the wife turned fake spy turned hostage turned actual agent gave a truly epic feel to the movie, something that La Totale lacked (although one scene is almost completely identical as it is iconic: the dropped uzi that keeps on firing better than any Stormtrooper). True Lies stars are used to action flicks. Claude Zidi's cast, part of the La Troupe Du Splendide actor collective, are more used to comedy than action, and it showed. Great movies, both of them, done in two completely different scopes

The thing about the first Avatar and why it made so much money was the buzz around the 3D. It kicked off the next generation of 3D movies and the ticket prices were a lot higher as well. Because yeah, the movie itself didn't reinvent the genre and it's essentially just a CGI film which was done before. It was all about the 3D element. I mean, in China alone it made 400 million. In Australia it did around 100 million. These are numbers which were unheard of then and even today for these kinds of countries. But I saw the first one in the cinema and the buzz at the time was the IMAX 3D was something which needed to be seen in a cinema. And as you have said, the only way you hit 1, 2 or 3 billion is from repeat viewings. People were going back 2, 3, 5 times to see it. Fast forward to 2022 and the 3D era is now well and truly dead as is the excitment for it. We've had 10+ years of a comic book cinematic universe in the MCU which has taken over all the buzz. So I don't know how well this second movie will do despite how good it is.

Bad 3D is dead. Good 3D is not. Avatar (2009) is about the only example of actual good 3D. If this movie's visuals were 90% as good, it would still blow away every movie released in the last decade in visuals. However, while the visuals were very cool and were definitely the main topic, people didn't just see it for the visuals, it was a decent story and had good action too. A movie can't be good in only one category to have legs as a rule. Avatar might not be ground-breaking in every field but it is still a very good sci-fi movie, a good action movie and has decent acting. Writing - could be better, could be worse. Score - good/great. Sound design/cinematography - also good/great. Most of the movie is great in fact. The weakest elements were the acting (sorry Sam Worthington!) and writing (unobtainium, that could be better...). The originality wasn't intended so that's not a criticism.
@CJTranceAddiction
@CJTranceAddiction Жыл бұрын
No, in China (at a time where there were like 90% less screens than what they have now, today) it made $200 million. Fast 5 made over $400 million there. And I've been saying this for years now. Avatar 2 WILL indeed make 3 billion whether it gets help from North America or not. If a film like Fast 5 grosses over $400 million in modern era china than Avatar 2 will make $1 billion in china alone hence why I strongly believe this has a shot at 3 billion. This is the kind of film buddhists and spiritual dwellers go crazy over. I'm one of them. This is just one of those universal films that everyone will go see, liking it or hating it. My mother despised the first one and saw it in the theaters. She just thinks the blue people are ugly and doesn't understand how people relate to them. Well guess what? She still wants to go see the second one in the theater in 3D as she thinks the world is spectacular.

I totally agree about the missing romance thing! That is the nr 1 reason why SW has not been working the last decade (there are numerous more reasons than that, mind you). But Reylo is not romance, that is something disturbing & at best nothing you care about, had no build-up. The Mandalorian still works because it is about a father & a son, & that is honestly the only romance, or deep emotional bond, I can think of that Disney SW has produced. We all love Grogu because he's cute & adorable & all that but what truly makes him work is the love & bond he shares with his foster-dad Din, they both look after each other. What made the original SW OT work? The magic trio & their friends. Breaking that up was the absolute biggest mistake in movie history! Cameron understands this. He's not breaking up the Sully family, they have expanded hugely & the more TV spots & trailers we get we see the love & respect between a husband & his wife & their kids. I have my ticket since weeks back! Bring on the romance, I say! I have not gotten anything properly in a decade. And I am starving. I wanna cry my eyes out! And the TV spots & trailers already manage to do that.

Star wars Prequels also have romanticism and a lot of heart. I know people criticise them and i am aware of their flaws but i genuinely feel a child like wonder while watching them. And i think specially Phantom Menace is overlooked the most - if you see Anakin’ s perspective its quite good, for example the scene where ANakin leaves his mother is very emotional, especially if you see it from a child’s perspective
@Imylover
@Imylover Жыл бұрын
@@starwarsfan9575 Totally agree! The SW Prequels never get the full recognition they deserve. Sure, they are flawed & could have been made better. But they for sure have the romance of what story telling & cinema is & was always meant to be. Complete escapism, transporting us elsewhere, making us feel all sorts of things. Romance on film is not just about boy meets girl & they fall in love, no. It is the very romantic idea, perspective, of what a story should be & can be. Something more than what our everyday lives in our real world is. Romance is all about dreaming & hoping for what could be, more & better, happier. The Prequels is a tragedy but is such a vital part of what is SW. My fav of them is actually AOTC, the one no one likes.
