I run my wiim mini as a Alexa shared speaker combo with my Echo Show. I'm limited to HD (CD) quality doing this because that is the max quality of the Echo Show BUT.. i get a great visual showing music playing and the lyrics (when available) from the show on a small device on my shelf. Note - you need to set up a Alexa group that includes both the WIIM Mini and the Echo Show to make this work. For someone that doesn't want a TV in my living room but wants a bit of cover art to display with music, this is a great setup. Thanks to John for turning me on to the WIIM Mini earlier this year. I love mine.

A quick late note on the TV optical delay. I've tried TV } optical } WiiM pro } coaxial } amp with no delay on a crappy techwood TV, no latency correction. (Maybe a recent update corrected the problem for anyone who is still curious)

The level of software support and level of streaming source compatibility is quite impressive. My most negative experience with Chinese audio products has primarily been poor software quality and lack of updates to fix bugs or implement new features. For most consumers the usability factor often outweighs considerations for sound quality especially when it comes at a higher cost.

Gave this a shot as a streamer only in my mid tier system (around $2k-$3k per component) against an original Orchard Audio PecanPi, Allo Signature Raspberry Pi with Allo Shanti power supply, and an original Bluesound Node. With its stock wall wort the Wiim Pro came in 4th sounding more constrained and congested than the others and I wouldn't recommend it for any level system other than very low end non-critical listening systems. However, add the Allo Shanti power supply and it vaults right to the top equaling the Allo Signature with Shanti. For around $350 it's definitely a value keeper in that configuration.

Thanks for the follow up, John. I put together two small systems for my niece and nephew utilizing a Wiim Mini as the streamer into a Schitt Modi+ DAC. I tested one of the systems beforehand and was very impressed. I have 4 Bluesound Nodes (various vintages) in the house and a Roon Nucleus/Linn Selekt for my main system, but will also be building a small headphone system around a Wiim Mini. I’m not sure the Wiim Pro adds much for me. Happy Holidays and keep up the good work.

A few comments on latency. There is an option in settings to sync audio. When you click on it, there is an option to autosync or do it manually. I only use mine for music, not connected to TV so haven't tested it. It may do the trick.

Regarding the latency problem you experienced using a tv as a source, many tvs have a "lip sync" or delay setting in the audio menu. On another thought, Ive been in the AV business for over 40 years and have an older analog based Linn system. I tried a Node and was not happy with the OS. I'm intrigued by the WIIM pro. I am currently not streaming and am thinking of using one of these, based on your review. While at some point I will need a "real" DAC, I'm currently not interested in spending a lot, as I've been disappointed by the sound quality of most so called "Hi Res" music. On the iPhone KZbin app you have to click ‘more’ two times to get to the full description with links. The video itself and ‘comments’ are the most prominent things, so that’s what I generally look at. If I wanted more detail I guess I would look for the longer description.

🌶Many TVs have an adjustable setting to re-synch audio and video to compensate for this kind of scenario, presumably by adding a slight delay to the video. Check your TV settings and see if you have a slider for this, and adjust it while watching someone speak.

with regards to the lip sync issue, I have a Wiim Mini and if you go into device settings there is an option to 'Sound sync' which you can manually or auto adjust your speakers timing. I haven't tried this as I don't use it as a DAC for my TV but it might fix the issue

OMG, the Wiim Pro is brilliant. Thank You John for doing this review! The app is strangely similar to the blueOS ver which makes it superbly easy to use. For the first time, streaming music actually sounds great. Even the blueOS NAD C700 does not sound as good as my current streaming set-up: Wiim Pro > Chord M Scaler > Chord Quetest > Willstenton R amp.

I appreciate your feedback because it's very hard to test or gain sample equipment due to the direct sale nature many companies are taking. If there is a great product that is currently being produced and sold it should be considered for products available for the year.

Regarding being bit-perfect... it simply depends what someone means by being bit-perfect. If it's about no source resampling up to the resolution set on the digital output then yes, both are bit-perfect. If it's about being able to transfer decoded source stream to the DAC without any data alteration / corruption / being bit-2-bit equal to the source, answer is - rather not, possibly yes, depends on DAC possibilities.

I think part of the issue with the description box is KZbin's implementation of it. It's tiny and difficult to locate between all the ads and other buttons available. The other issue is that some people are just lazy and need to be told repetitively.

When I got my Pro yesterday, there was no detectable latency from SPDIF in to coax out. Today I noticed quite severe latency (I estimate about 500ms). I don't know what I did between yesterday and today to cause that to happen, but I did notice that using the app to switch from SPDIF in to Line In and then immediately back to SPDIF in solved the problem.

I reported this latency issue to Wiim support and they replied that it would be fixed in the next firmware release. And sure enough, since the Jan 4 4.8.503558 release, I have not noticed the issue. The release notes for that release say "Improvement - Reduce the Line-in/SPIDF-in latency to 20+ ms to improve A/V sync for TV audio". That doesn't sound exactly like the intermittent issue I was having, but close enough.

Got my mini early from France, I'll definitely get the Pro to replace my Arylic streamer, Chromecast, Burr Brown DAC, Alexacast and toslink I/O- what a deal. Plus about a $100 less than upgrading to a new Arylic with a low-end ESS chip.

Naim Audio Connection - Thank you for this very interesting review. I'm relatively new to streaming and have been researching the addition of a streamer into my Chord Desktop DAC, Naim 52 preamp, Supercap and 135 mono blocks. Historically it was crucial to pay attention to every component in a system. Im sure this is still the case but was curious if the internal DAC won't be used in the streamer, how crucial then is it to go mid price point for a streamer to offer compatibility with the current amplification DAC set up. or in this case go for a budget streamer as a front end control component with the focus quality wise on the DAC amps, speakers, cables etc. Thank you John for a very informative and professional site / channel.

On the remote, originally it was confusing as to if the remote would come with the WiiM Pro. On the WiiM website, forums, they clarify "the remote will be released in late Dec as the separate listing. We'll have two SKUs for Pro (with or without remote)." Hopefully, for us early adopters that purchased the pro now, there won't be a cost penalty to purchase the remote when released. On latency, if you are watching KZbin on a fireCube using the WiiM Pro for sound, I will check when my WiiM Pro arrives, I think you can adjust to sync sound and video on the FireCube.

To answer John's comment about link boxes, it very much depends on what platform you view the video from.. if for example your using KZbin app on something like a fireTV device.on your smart TV - it's not really possible to find the "linked comments" - on a laptop it's easy.

Or RokuTVs or AppleTV, etc. KZbin’s interface for TVs suck, although if you watch on a TV and connect with a tablet, it does give you the option to sync the two, allowing for seeing the collateral content. I wish KZbin would allow for a Pinning of a video that is watched on a television platform, for content purposes. Sorta like saving a video, but instead, saving the collateral content. Almost like a reading list, if that makes sense?

Which brings up an idea. What if you flashed a qr code at the beginning or ending, or when you mention collateral content. That qr code could link back to the video, or to a web page that has all of the content. It is a bit of a workaround, but would allow and also prompt people to view the content alongside of your primary video content. Again, just an idea. I recognize the extra effort to do what I am talking about and maybe that is more trouble than it is worth. Just wanted to throw out the idea, though.

i purchased the Pro last week, i saw somewhere that it would decode DSD, up to 512, it doesn't, i don`t know if this is something they changed before production.. another reason was that i wanted the casting facility, so i could stream KZbin audio whilst watching a video, however, whatever i try in sync settings, the lip sync is miles out. also, the voice commands on the remote doesn't seem to work, after pressing the button and saying a command, the LED on the main unit just flashes red. other than that, i am quite pleased with the little thing!

@Darko Audio, regarding the description box issue, I have been working in IT for the last 10 years in several roles on almost all levels. Now, no matter where you are, you can document as much as you want. Still you will get questions into support which have been answered a dozen of times before and documented in a dozen of places. I have learned that people are lazy and want to be spoon-fed information and have increasingly worse and worse short term memory. I guess this is also why this platform is transforming to a short 10 second clip TikTok like streaming service. No need to remember things, I'll just watch 10 second YT video

Hey John, great video with good remarks towards us watchers/subscribers. Now, I’ve only “discovered you” this year, so I haven’t watched all of you videos since you’ve started (and I can imagine very well that I’m not the only one). I’m mentioning this because with regards to the “what fits as a “something of a year whatnot”, perhaps an explanation on your reviewing process could help with why you review the products you do. Obviously, you can’t review everything, and seeing as you need to take things more slowly you really shouldn’t, but perhaps sharing why the Wiim products were reviewed but “random other 2022 product” didn’t? Also, as to pointing us to the description box, two points: I think more and more of us are watching KZbin on their TVs directly. There, the description box is nearly impossible to access, let alone read. That could explain why we don’t read it. And secondly, we (as simple human users of an interface) need a reason to perform an action, such as open up the description box. Although, yes, you do mention “more info in box below”, our simple monkey brains don’t automatically assume that ALL info of what is on screen (or beyond) will be in the description. When reviewing the Wiim, for example, I can assume most of us are expecting something like a link to Wiim product info or perhaps some specs in the description box, not information on a door stopper. Working in product management, we have to assume that our users think simpler than we initially expect them too, and often have to make things overtly obvious and we explicit before they understand. Just my thoughts though. Love the channel, great reviews, explanations and everything. Keep up the good work 👏👏👏👏

I have both. There were several reviewers pointed out the optical output from mini is not as good as pro or pro plus even with an external DAC. Pro can do KZbin music through built in chromcast is a plus for me.

Surely since the price to weight ratio of this box is less than oxygen free silver, it cannot possibly convey the transient micro details and what have your! We should at least upgrade its power cable or something! Would a precious metal oil-filled bypass capacitor do the trick? 😁

It seems all but clear that DAC function on WIIM Streamers is subpar. I want to leverage Tidal Connect in WiiM Pro but I'm wondering what budget DAC should I pair it to. I've got 2 options (1. Loxjie D30; 2. Topping E50). I've read good things from those 2 and the price point is no my target budget. The thing is. Would both DACs serve for the same purpose, that is, Stream Tidal to WiiM then unfold and render on the DAC of choice? Or do I need to setup Wiim to at least Decode and output through Coax/Optical and then Render on the DAC of choice? Also, I'm not sure if E50 decodes from Coax/Optical, seems only does it on USB Input (WiiM do not have USB Output though). Loxjie D30 is supposed to Decode from Coax/Optical/USB Appreciate your comments!

John there is no more help you can give to help people find the description box. Well other than put the word description box on your forehead. Joking aside. I really like how you do the ad break. Maybe before you end the episodes you can do something similar put up a full image of what is in the description box and call it a description box break. ?? Just some ideas. Keep up the great work. Has anyone had success with using the analog or spidff inputs on the Pro? On the spdif input from my tv I get random distortion, and using the analog in from the tape out of my stereo I'm getting a sort of rapid low frequency feedback. I'd like to try this scenario to "broadcast" when I play my turntable and listen to it where I have the Wiim Mini at another location.

Maybe I mist something… but if there is a coax out… is it the best way to use Apple Music from iPad (or phone) and have the 24/192 send to my better DAC?

As an LS50w user (1st gen) would the WiiM Pro have any discernible advantage over the WiiM Mini streaming via spdif directly to the Kefs using Tidal?

Looking through the comments and it seems a video like this encourages more direct technical questions. Kinda boring comments if I’m being honest. I like good technical questions for common use scenarios, but odd ball usages or already answered topics with a finer detail question=boooring. The chili point though is a very important detail. Not a small issue for using with a tv.
