MAN! That Stand By Me part struck me SO HARD! I wasn't ready! I didn't even know it was coming but it resonated so much with my heart and how I NEED God so much everyday! There is so much CRAP in this life to deal with, it get's so tiring, but God is my safe place and my defense who is always there! It's easy to forget on a day to day basis just how much I need him with the busyness and demands of life, and all of a sudden you're out in the middle of the ocean in what appears to be a sinking ship. Then in your panic you are reminded of who stands right beside you on that ship, keeping it afloat with his mere presence. The words Stand By Me may have been co-opted by a pop song, but they resonate the heart of God and the cry of His creation that needs him, even when they don't acknowledge Him. This was genius. This was true worship.

Same, it made me tear up knowing God's love and amazing grace that just wouldn't let go. He is so faithful. Didn't know I would find "Stand By Me" to describe my relationship with God.

I think that people that don't like the Stand By Me part are just confused about what worship is. God is and does everything good in this world, including good music, so when an artist (Christian or not) makes a good song, he's unknowingly giving glory to God because he's the one who put that creativity in us. So to see something like Stand By Me be brought into a worship setting is awesome.

as a music lover, i get that songs can be open to interpretation. a "secular" song can be interpreted through a christian world view. some may even be redeemable. however, as a worship leader i would be careful and prayerful with this. although we can make our own interpretation of the song by changing, removing, or adding to the lyrics (in this case, changing "oh darling, darling stand by me" to simply "won't you, won't you...) we cannot dismiss the original intention, audience, and meaning of a secular song that we want to "christianize". I don't have a problem with this, but thought and prayer is needed in many, if not all things, which include using a well known secular songs in worship. otherwise someone could be singing Christianized versions of backstreet boys and matchbox 20 incorporated in their worship sets. John did well with this song medley. it fits the theme of God not letting us go and Him chasing after the lost. I was curious about how they were going to deal with it lyrically where it goes " oh darling, darling stand by me."

It's also important to note that John Mark isn't exactly a worship leader... Sure he writes songs about Jesus that can drive people to worship by the stirring of Spirit-driven songs. However, I'm not sure his role is designated as a corporate worship leader; he's more of a Christian singer-songwriter.
