Fans sometimes refer to this performance as "the miracle at Sonisphere". It was undoubtedly one of the most important shows of the career and the one that really showed that they were more than a one-hit, flash in the pan gimmick band. Babymetal took on the notoriously hostile UK festival crowd and won them over in only 30 minutes.

_Kitsune tobe!_ 🦊🤘🙅♂️ This was the moment 60K UK souls felt in love with this Japanese group, they called it the miracle of Sonisphere, after this UK become the 2nd home for them. There's no unknown reason, in fact, Gimme Chocolate!! started to become viral all over the internet and there was a fans campaign to push BM for this festival, after that it was no brainer they switched the small stage for a main stage. The story is long so I'm pretty sure you'll get the full story. Thanks for sharing this amazing performance in this year being the 10th anniversary of this special festival. See you next time John!🦊🤘🔥

If you watch the entire Sonisphere set (as this was the final song), the transformation is even more start. The people go from incredulous, to "ok this is actually good" to fully invested around the time they play Megitsune, to absolute into every bit of it by the end of IDZ. You can see (and they have mentioned this in interviews) how with each song, the core of people cheering and raising their hands, getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger, until as you saw, by the end... every person in sight has their hands up, even the ones in the back. The Sonisphere Miracle. 10 years ago in just a few months.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 The phrase "Dame Zettai (= No absolutely)" is originated from police campaign against illegal drugs which had started in 1960s. So this song implies that "Ijime (= bullying)" is considered as harmful and addictive as illegal drugs. We have to continue our efforts at home and in school (and in any society or organization or group in the world) to eliminate it. In this video, I love to see the excited crowd gradually turn into enthusiastic audience. When three girls started to speak some words in the interlude, loud cheers quickly subsided and the audience even tried to listen to what they were saying although the people could not understand our language. I am emotionally moved whenever I see that scene. People in the crowd became happy, so did Kami band, and I am sure that the three girls fell asleep very happily that night after the biggest event in their life in foreign county. This song was revived in January 2020 and BABYMETAL have performed many times since then with Su-Metal's matured voice and encouraging moves by Moa and Momoko. It was probably their message to the current world.

Great reaction. 🦊As Jake Muller said, it was 'Gimme Chocolate' going viral coupled with a fan campaign "BABYMETAL for Sonisphere" then the fact their concert in London scheduled for a couple of days after this sold out so fast that it was moved to a bigger venue (and that sold out fast as well) that led to them being moved to the main stage from the original small side stage or tent. They did have a couple of months notice of the move, so not very long but also not last minute. From back stage they couldn't see the crowd and were worried what they should do if nobody had come to see them ... and when they did walk out they were surprised to see so many people. Su said in an interview that they saw a sea of puzzled looking faces and thought to herself "This will be fun. Let's knock it out of the park." She seems fearless. She has also said how, as their set went along, what had been just the front few rows jumping and singing along with them seemed to spread like a wave from the front to the back as more and more of the crowd got into it.

Great reaction as always, thanks! This is one of their most important moments in their career. They have talked about it later even describing how was the hole thing and the reaction of that crowd. A type of crowd that tends to be quite hostile towards "novelties" and acts that don't match their expectations (I've seen bands booed and having to dodge thrown bottles, literally). I'm so glad you noticed that moment when Mikio realized they had already won. Suzuka also had her moment of realization a few seconds before. And this is important because they were very aware of the importance of the moment and that it could be very good or very bad for them. Fortunately it was incredibly good and you can tell by Su's expressions during the outro. A member of the organization of the festival said in an interview that it was the largest crowd ever seen at that time slot, around 12pm. They walked off the stage while the crowd was chanting "we want more!" (of course they wanted more!). They also sold more merch than any other band that weekend (including Iron Maiden, Metallica, Anthrax, Dream Theater, Slayer...). This is what I call an epic win. 🤘🦊

The happy guitarist that got a lot of screen time here was Mikio Fujioka. He was using a ESP E-II Horizon 7 during this time. In 2016, he got his own ESP signature version (ESP Snapper Burgundy Mist in 6 and 7 string models). He died January 5th 2018 from injuries from a fall off a star gazing tower a week before. Kami member Takayoshi Ohmura (who has multiple of his own signature guitars) uses Mikio's guitar at Babymetal shows and at his other projects.

In this classic IDZ performance you get a bit of everything: Kami Band shredding, Su power vocals, Su's hyper extended elbow, Moa and Yui backing vocals, dancing, and a Yui tutu malfunction. The title takes an iconic Japanese anti-drugs slogan "Mayaku, Dame, Zettai" (Absolutely no drugs) and uses it against bullying substituting Ijime (bullying or abuse) for Mayaku (drugs). In the two years before this concert BM had worked hard to transform themselves from an idol group, just singing and dancing to backing tracks, into a metal band capable of performing live in concert. The Kami Band had been formed and integrated into the performances and they had played several Japanese festivals and done the Legend concerts in preparation for touring. After that BM were getting good buzz and they were invited to perform at Sonisphere, a big UK metal festival at Knebworth, as part of their first European tour. They were nervous because the UK crowd was notoriously tough and weren't expecting such a large crowd, but by the end of their 30 min set they had won them over completely. IDZ was their finale. It's the moment that critics and the international audience realized that BM were a legitimate headlining band and not just a gimmick. It was also a complete vindication of Koba's vision and everyone's hard work and I think you can see that in Su's smile at the end.

I checked it again, while Babymetal had performed in 2013 many times with the Kami band, Babymetal was still performing in at the start of 2014 without Kami band as well, with Babybones. The last time was at Music Station in feb. 2014, which was their first Music Station performance, they performed with both Kami band and Babybones, I assume backing track as well. As often happened at TV shows. Su-metal in the interview said: fusion of idol and metal. Yes, they were very much hardening their live capability, but hadn't fully transitioned yet even in early 2014 before the release of the first album. I wonder what would have happened if Gimme Choco MV hadn't gone viral, they wouldn't have been able to perform at Sonisphere, they would probably still had performed at the Budokan shows in 2014 and would still have transitioned to Kami band only, but who knows how much international success they would have had ?

When you think of it, Babymetal in general, and in this instance in particular, are the ultimate fish out of water story. Young Japanese girls rarely get out of a very small comfort zone back home, and grow up with fluffy J-, K-, etc pop genres. The girls of Babymetal themselves said they'd never heard of heavy metal music before Koba introduced them to it. So they are thrust into this world of thunderous guitars and sometimes scary themes, and somehow adapt and come to actually enjoy the ride. But here, they were relatively new to international stages, and found themselves in front of one of the toughest metal audiences out there. The Brits don't accept you easily. But like a stereotypical rock movie, these unlikely heroes managed to tame the Sonisphere crowd in the end. You can see just before they walk offstage, Queen Su scans the audience as if surveying her newly conquered subjects, almost Game of Thrones-esque.

autohmae sumarises the back story perfectly. The idea they were booked for a smaller stage I am afraid is a myth - the concert organiser corrected that in an interview some years later. He had booked them for that stage because he had heard of them and thought they would be interesting. Saying that this was their first large non asian audience (who are generally nice). UK metal fans will tell you if they do not like you - those plastic bottles they will through won't have water in shall we say. That is 50K of metal fans who most had never heard of them. It was a risk for BM - but damn they pulled it off big time. And the UK became their second home. On a side note that was back when Moa/Yui had no idea how to not perform at max speed for a whole show - when they run they are sprinting their best.

This was the last song in the set, they performed 5 songs, this was their first foreign metal/rock/music festival. Culture and customs were different for festivals in the west than in Japan for example and because of the language barrier their were misunderstandings and because they felt a time pressure they had the Kami band had do the soundcheck themselves, they showed off their skills a bit (like the Kami band intro they often do) and it helped get the crowd hyped. But the festival said: if the musicians are on stage, that time will be deducted from the performance, so they quickly started the performance. This was in July 2014. The 2013 and 2014 years were whirlwind years. Just like for example 2016. They are doing all this while still in school, with good grades (if they don't get good grades they will not be allowed to work supposedly a policy set by the company and at least 1 of their parents). They hadn't performed much outside of Japan they did some anime conventions in Asia, but more importantly, they had performed a many times with the Kami band the year before touring around Japan their own shows and doing festivals. Including their mini tour Babymetal Death Match May Revolution. Before that Kami band had only performed a few closing songs at Babymetal own shows in 2012. They had actually started the year 2013 still performing without the Kami band, but with a backing track and with the 'Babybones'. 2013. including performing with the Kami band at Loud Park a metal festival in Japan. The end of 2013 was Legend 1997 on the 21th and on the 28th they had their first solo show outside of Japan, but without the Kami band again. And in January an other 2 performances without the Kami band. And in February their first performance at the most important music TV show in Japan: Music Station, 1 song, IDZ again, oddly enough with both the Kami band and Babybones and backing track for TV (as still is far to common at TV shows, especially Japan). And the release of the Gimme Choco MV from Legend 1997 was also in February. The international releases of the same album in Europe was in May. Then the 2 shows at Budokan Red Night and Black Night in 2014 in March after they released their first album in Japan and after the last song at Budokan they announced their world tour. An international release for the US of the album was in June. And this Sonisphere performance was the 3rd show of that world tour. The first 2 shows were also birthday shows, but much smaller than Legend 1997. Yuimetal had her birthday a few weeks before, celebrated it at Legend Y in Paris, France and few days later Legend M in Germany was Moametal's birthday on the day of her birthday and that same day they flew to the UK, Moametal was very happy about this, because of the timezones her birthday was 25 hours instead of the regular 24. Yep, they were still kids. 🙂 That was 4th of July. And then this Sonisphere performance on the 5th, literally the next day. Followed closely by their own show in at The Fourm on the 7th. The setlist was: (intro video) BABYMETAL DEATH Gimme Choco Catch Me If You Can, with the Kami band intro Megitsune (small pause with an other intro video) Ijime,Dame,Zettai

Glad to see you've got around to this classic and iconic performance. A few years ago, I put their whole concert at this gig together, from multiple fancams and this MV and others, in chronological order, as I was amazed it hadn't been done before. I also added a 2021 interview with Su where she says this was one of her most memorable and important appearance as she knew that, by the crowd reaction, Babymetal had been accepted outside of Japan. There's also a photo of them just before they went on stage, peeking out at the 60,000 crowd nervously. It's on my YT channel if you ever feel the need to see the whole 35 minute gig! Amuse were OK with it, so I reckon the Fox God must have been pleased and averted their eyes from it!

The story goes that there were rumours some of the fans were planning to throw stuff at them but those turned out to be unfounded as honestly most of that 65 thousand crowd (nobody ever asks the 10000 Satan slaves if they have tickets)had never heard of them and all around the question was being asked "who the F*** are Babymetal". They were meant to be on the side stage however 24 hours previously gimme chocolate had gone viral so the producers not really knowing what they were doing switched them to the main stage in front of the entire UK metalhead mob there to see Maiden. Yui took a peek out from behind the curtain and ran back to Moa saying we are F`d and have you seen them and terrified the 3 girls prepared to meet probably the ugliest crowd they will ever meet,30 minutes later well they had gone and won over that crazy crowd and you could not get the Babymetal album in the UK for weeks after as they sold out quick. Another rumour is the Su slaves as they now call themselves lol threatened to smash up London if the London gig was not moved to a much larger venue as they felt the small venue was an insult to the Metal Goddess lol 🦊 What a crazy day that was,.one i will never forget here were these 3 cute Japanese girls making Slayer look tame lol
