I dont think Chris Hansen ruined anything, and he is no more responsible than dozens of other KZbinrs. Hansen at least did all he could, he did contact authorities and he put "victims" in contact with authorities. The problem is, Onision is a jerk and he did some dubious things, but he didnt break the law. He didnt sleep with under age girls. Fangirls tried to weazel their way into Onision's internet famous life then when they fell out of favor they turned on him and played the victim. I think they all deserve each other.

@@tubester4567 He didn't contact the authorities, and he encouraged the victims to contact the authorities through him (like sending him evidence instead of sending it to the authorities). The thing is, Onision did break the law by transporting underage girls across state lines for the purposes of sex, and he admitted to doing that. What bugs me is that this should have been an open-and-shut case. The problem was, and had always been, Chris Hansen's incompetence. He's a good reporter who's great at self-promotion, but he has always been awful at actually bringing the people he reports on to justice. What I find baffling is that at the start of this Onision was a universally-disliked has-been KZbinr who had one big viral hit years ago and is now mostly known for cringy videos and terrible books as he desperately tried to become famous again. Now, people like him more than ever simply because he came out of this situation looking like a very charming and innocent man simply because Chris handled everything so poorly. This is like if Moviebob was in an internet fight with Keanu Reeves where, somehow, Moviebob ends up looking like the good guy at the end while Keanu's reputation is ruined. It takes a special kind of incompetence to lose a PR battle with Onision, of all people.

There is no evidence of Onision "sleeping with underage girls". Even if he started talking with them at 17, thats not a crime. Those girls were all fangirls who pursued him even though he had a bad reputation on the internet and he already had a partner. I dont see those girls as victims at all.

Onision has done a ton of unsavory things, but he's been smart enough to know exactly where the legal line is. He's tiptoed ever so close, but has managed to not cross that line. Again, he's a garbage human being, but it doesn't mean he's prosecutable.

TCAP basically used the fact that some states had a law that allowed someone to be charged even if they hadn't actually groomed a minor as long as they thought that was what they were doing. I don't think that law is on the books in every state, which is why the investigations they did were only focused in a few places.

Chris accuses "drama channels" of clout chasing, while he simultaneously publicizes an investigation that he knows is dead in the water, simply so he can be seen as the hero. What's worse, his videos and methods could all be taken to court as evidence of harassment, and Onision could not only get off scott-free, but also make a ton of money in legal payout, should he choose to take it to court

I understand that this video, and in a large part, most Onision/Chris Hansen videos are focusing on just that. But I do think there should be a bit more light on the police in this situation. It's obvious that there are so many things going on with Onision and the way the police handled it was less than great. That isn't to say everyone else didn't have a part in it all. I think some people forget that Chris Hansen's credentials as a predator catcher have never involved him having to find evidence or to find victims of crimes. With TCAP, he wasn't going out looking for people who had abused children, gathering evidence and testimony, and bringing them to justice. He (along with Perverted Justice) was essentially creating the evidence from scratch. That's not to defend any of the people caught by his investigations; but it is to say that Hansen's ability to do anything more than interview people who got caught by the net is basically untested - until now, when it's been shown to be pretty lacking). Hansen was never having to deal with victims refusing to come forward, or victims who might not actually be victims, or the fuzzy edges of the law regarding grooming. On TCAP they made as sure as they could that there wouldn't be any doubt about whether the crime had been committed (although they weren't always successful), but in real life, things are just a lot messier than that. Even then, judges didn't always agree with their methods, and a fair number of people caught by TCAP weren't convicted as a result. I'm also pretty sure that the law that allowed TCAP to use chatlogs that didn't involve any actual minors only applied in some states. It's pretty easy to assemble a case against someone when you're on the other end of the Internet conversation, purposefully guiding it in that direction because you want to have that evidence. And I think it has presented a misleading sense of how black and white and straightforward any investigation would actually be.

So, I'm so confused. I thought the laptop was never given to the FBI. I thought the laptop was just at Chris' assistants place, and nothing was done with it since he was waiting for directions from Chris. So, the laptop was eventually given to the FBI?

Correct, the laptop was eventually sent to the FBI, but it sat at the assistants house and he even said he was going to copy the hard drive, making it tampering with evidence. So after Sara found out, they sent it back to her and she submitted the laptop to the FBI. I believe this was over 6+ months after she gave the laptop to Hansen.

Totally agree in terms of arrests etc. However there are two other big things to consider. 1, should the law be changed? The internet evolves very quickly and the law is definitely behind the times across the board. 2. Just because it isnt illegal doesnt you mean you cant/shouldnt hate the person. Bullying isnt illegal, but I hate bullies. (Maybe not a great example but you get the point)

The TCP show was always highly sus to me. When you're going after people nobody will defend, you can get away with all kinds of scams. I was actually probably solicited by one of their 'agents' several times over a period of 2 days. I was in a yahoo chat room and several girls messaged me. And while it's not usual to get messages from bots. They were actual people. It always turned out to be minors and when I said I wouldn't be interested, they'd just drop off. I was still 19 or 20 at time. I was not that much older than the girls who were messaging me but I always knew there were plenty of other ladies out there so I passed. I didn't even know this was a show until a few months later and they were doing an episode about a sting in my state. lol

When it comes to people like Chris Hansen they still have not completely realized that the way the news, information gathering & dispersing & the ability to publicly disagree is a VERY different animal than it was when they were in their "heyday". The Onision story is the perfect example of this; Chris Hansen didn't stumble upon this story he took the work of people in the KZbin community & tried to put his name on it. Then he truly believes that the only information that will not only be believed but available will come from him. In his "world" the only ones that may questions his reporting, his stance & the validity of his words would either be from fringe reporters or an exposé that would come out months maybe years later when the public had already moved on. So so so many things about this investigation were just bungled. The mass amounts of call to the police & CPS regarding Onision only made law enforcement see it as a joke but the most harm came directly from Hansen. I hope that every single one of the victims (and yes I 1000% believe these women's stories & allegations) can find peace. And as one survivor to another I would encourage them all to remember that they went from being a "victim" to "victorious" the second they went public and showed that rather poor excuse for human slime that he no longer has control over them. They will succeed / fail, love / hate, win / lose and live with the knowledge that they are stronger than Onision could ever be. They will go on knowing that he has no power because who they are, who they become is not because of this piece of trash & his horrors but in spite of him. Love to the ones to help bring these stories to light with the hope of doing good in this world & love to all the brave survivors out there.
