If you think someone is choking, I think you first encourage them to cough it out. If it is clear they can't or it doesn't work, the next step is back blows. After 5 of those, then you would give abdominal thrusts (Heimlich). Whether he knew it or not, he basically did the right thing if QT couldn't forcibly cough it out.

Not sure if it's an EU vs US thing, or I'm just outdated, but in the first aid training I took we were explicitly told that you're supposed to attempt hitting someone at near the top of the back several times before trying the Heimlich manouvre since the Heimlich isn't a "safe" thing to do and can cause damage if done improperly.

In Australia the Heimlich has never been recommended due to the potential complications and it not being proven to be any more effective than back blows or chest thrusts. Apparently there was quite the campaign promoting it in the US so much so that it was the only thing taught in American First Aid for about 20 years. I'm guessing that is why so many Americans seem unaware of back blows etc. Even in the US the Heimlich is only recommended as a last resort these days.

Since it was suggested otherwise, I want to make it really clear that hitting someone on the back when they are choking is absolutely correct and is what is taught in modern first aid courses. The full process is to first get the person to try to cough, if that fails you attempt 5 back blows (hitting them between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand) each time checking if it worked. After this the recommendation varies I think America still recommends the Heimlich after this, but in other countries chest thrusts are recommended which are a bit different. In some countries (e.g. Australia) the Heimlich is not recommended at all, and has never been, as it can cause various complications some of which are life-threatening and hasn't been shown to be any more effective than back blows and chest thrusts.

When i got CPR training we were taught to start with giving firm slaps/ smacks on the back when you think someone is choking (3 to 5) if that doesn’t get the item dislodged THEN that is when you’re supposed to do the Heimlich maneuver. It’s because if done right the heimlich will be extremely uncomfortable on the diaphragm, could bruise the lower ribs as well. Sooooo if you can avoid causing more pain and discomfort to the person by just smacking their back (hard) then that’s the first step.

It's also important to note that American fascination with inventors is directly related to our country's history with patent law It's why inventors of the 19th Century are also renown for having "invented" a shit ton of things per person, and why we hyper emphasize something like a Telephone attributed to Bell as a monolithic device that exists as something beyond the sum of it's parts (like, all those components required for the phone to exist as a device are all irrelevant and forgotten, but the Phone and all later incarnations of it are attributed to Bell, regardless of how obsolete his model became, like the forgotten about components). Notice we only do this with inventors and scientific innovators of a particular era in history. We don't regard Pythagoras for his worldview and philosophy of life, but we remember his Pythagorean Theorem for math class and SATs, even though the theorem itself is part of a wholistic cosmological philosophy. Like, nowhere else in the world does a society fixate on inventors like this (maybe Euro countries like France, Germany, UK, but that's a MAYBE)

So here is a misunderstanding about burning man. You are going in with the knowledge you are going to be stranded in the desert for the duration with the cloesest amenities hours away. You bring supplies for that often excess supples. Now because of the nature of the event you will have leaches that broght basically nothing but the shirt on their back and that is understood and generally the way that is dealt with is the soup kitchen. Some of these initial sales go to the soup kitchen which brings a bunch of food (soup sandwitches water) for the low prepared and leaches. There is also a astonishingly well equiped medical tent. (As in, you can get an xray well equiped) The only real danger here was the portipotty situation. Which if you are a reasonably resourceful person isn't even that hard to operate around if you have a 5 gallon bucket in your truck with a lid.(something many people bring every year because portipotties suck. Mind you thay only solves the issue for those people but the actually prepared were never in any more damger than they otherwise would have been.)

I was invited to come with a family to a Burning Man adjacent event, though it was significantly smaller (plus TikTok didn't exist yet). I think it being a bunch of rich people roleplaying poverty is fairly accurate. I only had a tent, but it was mostly a bunch of people trailer camping and just "having an experience" with big exhibits, stages, and whatnot. I don't regret going, per se, but I can't really see any real "message" or collective sentiment about much of anything. I'm also a straight-edge shutin, though, so I'm pretty sure a lot of the people there were having more fun than me.
