I can’t agree more, not only did she realise firsthand that she was being fed misinformation, but before taking action sheet, crowd, sourced her With scepticism And with that scepticism, she won’t even deeper, looking for information, unbiased, organised it And most importantly, she brought it to one of the largest audiences on KZbin, knowing that she could easily be made fun of Butt, like a teacher, she is, she knew that truth, incredibly important Before I get a touch grass comment, the concept of changing peoples minds, but the inability to change it back, the idea of taking a good intention person and turning them to a radical racist is incredibly terrifying and I know exactly what she means when she says that There’s a good percentage that some people watching this video will be served and Adè that will be a part of that pipeline

I was really concerned when Maya mentioned the birth control algorithm business initially because of how I've been made aware of the right wing extremist pipeline. The fact that she was able to notice it without external influence and learn as much about it in a few hours is impressive and inspiring. It took me years, and I wasn't even particularly radicalized. I still regularly have to correct and account for some of my preconceived notions in day-to-day life that come about because of it.
@DreamskyDance Жыл бұрын
I mean depends on the type of person i guess. I engage with various extreme content just to see what the loonies ( on the right and left respectfully ) have to say and never have fallen into radicalization pipeline. Maybe because i am not from US but from EU and my country had a colorful history in last 30 years and have been there to see it, so any public or media person or politician saying something i can deconstruct it and see the rhetoric and the core principles behind the rhetoric. For example, Jordan Peterson has his rhetoric and it is coated in a lot of widely known self-help principles known for decades, but his core principles are to bring about the theocratic and freedom constricted society. Now, you dont recognize this right away because he says some things that can stand on their own and are actually good advice ( this are known slef-help and psychological principles that sound smart and are true, but people are droning about them for decades now ), but slowly you fall into the rabbit hole and it tricks you to accept his core principles without him ever mentioning them explicitly. As i said, i saw many people on the public scene in my developing country doing exact same thing so i know it when i see it. Advice i would give to people so they can spot this more easily is that you have to recognize rhetoric and take it for what it is, learn to differentiate it from regular speech and promoting some ideas someone believes in, learn to deconstruct it. Genuinely watch and engage with content that you do not agree with just so you can learn to spot it, watch some Petersons ( or any of other clowns ) speeches for example and approach to it as a scientist deconstructing a topic of research, like archeologist or a historian would do for their topic of interest. And then you will see that everybody uses the same discourse and rhetoric tricks and methods to push their agenda, and suddenly you can recognize it everywhere. Sorry for wall of text but i hope it helps somebody to train their mind against those kind of stuff...
@__Henry__ Жыл бұрын
@@DreamskyDance This comment is for you too, j-wenning. I agree that rhetorical criticality is a generally reliable way to protect oneself from influence of radicalizing propaganda. (see resource paragraph below) One thing I notice about Maya that you, j-wenning, may not see is her perhaps deep sense of criticality, for examples being atheist, not being afraid of skin-walker stories, disbelief in ghosts, emphasizing she knows little about what she talks about, that things are complex. There is a way to consider and reconsider what one hears and reads so to build a sense of belief that is much less vulnerable to (and less reliant on) outside influence. That way is called critical rationality, and it's a skill that can be developed (without even much difficulty, really). One is left with a more stable world view, generally, though not necessarily absolutely (because very few world views are, imo.) DreamskyDance, interesting analysis of Peterson's rhetoric. I haven't heard it described in this way, and your way makes sense of the sort of "conservative" flavors I pick up of him and I think hear other people mentioning that he has. He supposes this sort of philosophically religiously grounded moral principle that is sort of plainly but not necessarily explicitly expressed. For me, it's hard to spot the priors he works with to reason out his conclusions. And so I'm not sure how to receive or respond to at least some of his conclusions. Sometimes they seem okay, but maybe only as historical reporting? Idk; I know I'm speaking vaguely about his speech as though everything he says is sort of one thing, which of course it's not. Anyway. Resource: I posted a couple links in response to seankaiser2505's comment that offer practical advice for orienting to a critical sense of mind especially for this internet culture many of us we live in. Here they are, again: When critical thinking isn't enough: to beat information overload, we need to learn 'critical ignoring' theconversation.com/when-critical-thinking-isnt-enough-to-beat-information-overload-we-need-to-learn-critical-ignoring-198549 To navigate the dangers of the web, you need critical thinking - but also critical ignoring theconversation.com/to-navigate-the-dangers-of-the-web-you-need-critical-thinking-but-also-critical-ignoring-158617

my biggest tip if youre on social media and someone tells you something thats scary about the world, talk to a real person about it, dont go on another social media because all it does is spiral you thanks to the algorithm
@user-th1pv6ks5o Жыл бұрын
Honestly fact check it, if your only by people who also believe in that, talking to a "real person" won't do anything. DEFINITELY DEFINITELY don't continue to go on social media about it, but look up a study, or more importantly a systemic study (the ones where they look at ALL the data and come to a conclusion about stuff) and look at how they conducted the study, and even look up the systems and processes on why the decisions get made the way they do. I recently had to do this with weather or not Sex ed is good, and came to a article to the white house against it, that only had sex ed and trans issued, only had a couple of studies on sex ed, not even trans people, on the site, and took me to a cult looking thing with S.M.I.L.E. as like the system they were proposing, then when I tried to click on a study it didn't work. You would think if it was a legitimate site, they would update their links to not use Adobe flash. Even video game sites like New grounds, and Cool math games updated when flash left and a supposedly "real" program with "real" studies backing their claim didn't???

I am pretty leftist and i've seen him giving statements and demonizing stuff that are not "right wing pipeline" stuff, just look that way from his vantage point. ...oh, and i am not from US but EU, so my political definitions vary because i had different experiences and am in different environment. For example, free health care is not something connected to socialism but something that is normal to have in a country. But on the other hand, unions are bloated and corrupt organizations that help themselves and give bare minimum to the worker, id rather have government regulate companies more for the benefit of worker so the unions are abolished and dont exist because they are a dead weight and remnant from real socialism which is pretty bad, a lot worse than capitalism ( i have personal experience and tons of experiences of others to back that claim up.. ).

this is so interesting, i live in the UK so haven’t been exposed to this. i wonder why that is? like, a kinda chicken-or-egg situation? i have to imagine that women are getting this sort of thing in certain areas because other women in those areas are getting them, but i just wonder how many women in those demographics are actively seeking out that content vs just getting served it
@sarraphinasorrow Жыл бұрын
@@saoirsetoad in my personal opinion, it’s being served to women in America more because our birth rate is in decline. Birthing a child is expensive, your baby is born into debt basically from day one. Even with good insurance. And then there’s no support for mothers or children besides some food assistance and that’s only if you are at a very low yearly income. Jobs don’t like to give maternity level. Mental health care for new mothers is lacking. Women in America, black women even more so, have a higher fatality rate during birth than you’d think. And now we have no right to abortion. So they terrorize you off birth control, then they start selling you an ideal that isn’t very obtainable for most of us. Its…very dark sided. A lot of these women are religious and it’s a big thing in the church to make a new generation of tithers basically. It’s a really long conversation. But it mostly boils down to propaganda for capitalism. Need new human capital to replace the dying off human capital.

Maya did a great job explaining something that she said she only researched briefly. One of my close friends parents are QAnon, and came from a very heavy wellness+spiritual background. Full belief that trump is going to save everyone, which is so weird when they're not even American. Born and raised in Australia... The hard part about social media propaganda and misinformation, is that outrageous (and often false) stories spread so far so quickly, but any correction struggles to make it to a small fraction of people. We really havent been taught how to deal with having so much information at our fingertips, and how to filter out the bullshit.

Maya opened me to a completely new perspective. Until now i was pretty confident that the conservative pipeline to radicalization was pretty much only targetting men, at least in the means of tiktok and yt shorts, with the likes of tate, "alpha males", "owning libs" and other figures. Even I fall victim of one of those clips randomly after a couple scrolls, and i dont subscribe to any of the sort. I even thought that viral conservative female figures were mainly targeting men, like your typical "pick me" girl. I was completely unaware that there was a similar push in women's tiktoks trying to pull them in to the rabbit hole too, using the "traditional" feminine way of life to counter feminism.. It seems everyone can fall prey of this. Ladies gotta be on the lookout too.

I have thought also about if I can kindof prevent conspiracy type rabbit holes as well, and I’ve come up with the fact that I feel like one of the best things to do is to send those people the media that YOU consume. To some degree I have parents that are in the target demographic for these things. My dad will see some very weird dieting misinformation, like “eating cucumbers is bad for men’s testosterone!”, or that most veggies are bad for you because if lectin or something, so you shouldn’t eat vegetables. Since his generation didn’t have access to good nutritional education, these are sometimes the first “sciencey sounding” commentaries on nutrition, and so it’s very easy to fall in. So send stuff to your parents. Articles. Preemptively show them the correct information, and educate them in media literacy, criticality, profit motives of grifting and shit, and teach them correct information, to the best of your ability.

They are made to pull you in once you glance at it so its very hard to leave them if you keep opening them even once in a while. You just have to go cold turkey and log out of everything. I actually work sometimes with instagram so I have to minimize my interactions with it and just consider it a part of my job. I don't get paid to keep scrolling so if I'm done I HAVE to log out. Right now I'm pretty addicted to youtube but I don't feel that bad about it, if you are really critical of who you follow and manually hide videos in your main page that you know are low quality crap or obviously have an agenda (about anything), you can effectively keep the algorithm in check. Just keep it about your tastes and hobbies. Shorts are more problematic but still doable.

Honestly I feel like I’ve even gone further than what Hasan has covered, I’m incredibly interested by this type of stuff but it’s definitely given me brain worms.

This episode is very controversial in the sense that they are tackling a topic that is massive and can't be solved in a day, but I think its good to call it out when you see it cause there are absolutely other people seeing the same kind of stuff on the internet and don't know what to think about it.

Good episode, but I can tell QT really wasn't feeling herself. Dissociation sucks, but just know if you need to not do an episode because you're feeling horrible (or rather nothing) then that's fine. Your health and wellness comes first. I hope you get some breakthroughs soon QT, keep fighting!

OH MY GOD. The radicalization of everything on social media (especially Instagram) is so true. Not even just politics, everything. Awwww, you like dogs? Here’s a cute dog page. Aww, you like that dog page? Here’s a dog getting rescued. Awwww, you like that dog getting rescued? Here’s a big dog rescue. Awww you like that dog rescue? Here’s a video of a dog getting eaten by a crocodile as everyone screams bloody murder and sobs. Enjoy!!! (This actually happened to me)

Regarding the 10k steps thing, I find the only thing that makes it easy for me to get to that goal is going to a theme park I went to the preview night for Halloween Horror Nights and ended up at around 11k steps but I definitely do not walk that much a day

Hormonal birth control is a super strong medication, and has to be in order to affect fertility. That is a stubborn process running in our bodies that is linked to every other hormone system in the body, and even temporarily disrupting it is not easy. BUT! We have non-hormonal birth control in the form of copper IUDs, and there are a wide variety of hormonal birth control options with different balances, that may affect you very differently!

Maya's deep dive was really really interesting. She is also presenting it and explained it very well. Personally i noticed that too, in my country especially during covid, alternative and healthy lifestyle people were protesting the covid measures together with far right neo-nazis. Ultimately both parroting international version of qanon ( yuuup, it has gone outside US with slight adjustments...). it was really jarring to see supposedly very left alternative and health and joga and such crowd going full circle and meeting with the far right in ideas. Also, it seems to me that it isnt much talked in general about this particular pipeline Maya was talking about. Please Maya continue to do deep dives into various interesting topics, it is interesting to listen to and you present it well.
