Not enough said about the obligation of the QB, and even the play caller/designer, to try to the keep the WR as 'safe' as possible in a fundamentally unsafe activity. And if the NFL is seriously trying to mitigate dangerous contact on WR making a play on the ball, either change the way that the game works or explain in detail how players should be coached to make hits and tackles. To respond to @mcshitums9362 's question, I think it is the NFLs responsibility to instruct coaches on how to coach players, which will trickle down to an understanding by fans, on just what the right thing he should have done as a defender in that situation. This is all part of the myriad reason the NFLs 'product' is becoming an unwatchable joke. But, that's another convo, thanks for letting me vent!!

Rule 12, Section 2, Article 9,Subsection a, Subsubsection 2. "A receiver attempting to catch a pass who has not had time to clearly become a runner. If the player is capable of avoiding or warding off the impending contact of an opponent, he is no longer a defenseless player" defines the receiver as defenseless. Subsection b. Subsubsection 3. "illegally launching into a defenseless opponent. It is an illegal launch if a player (i) leaves both feet prior to contact to spring forward and upward into his opponent, and (ii) uses any part of his helmet to initiate forcible contact against any part of his opponent’s body. (This does not apply to contact against a runner, unless the runner is still considered to be a defenseless player, as defined in Article 7.)" I don't think both of his feet left the ground, but he absolutely hit a receiver attempting to catch a pass who has not had time to become a runner by launching himself forward and upwards into the defenseless player while using his helmet to initiate forcible contact against the chest of the receiver. It was a dangerous hit that just barely missed being helmet to helmet. It absolutely makes sense to try to get that sort of human missile attempt out of the NFL given what we know about concussions now. I still think it's a bad call, but much MUCH worse calls/non-calls happen every game.
@michaelhaddock86365 күн бұрын
Upvoted firstly because it is always great to see someone actually cite the rule in question. I don't know a lot about American Football so this is helpful. I was aware that there had been some rule changes recently to try and stop tacklers leading with the helmet, but didn't know the precise rule in this circumstance. It also shows up how few people (players, coaches and commentators) actually know the facts behind what they are complaining about. To me it seems like this was exactly the sort of hit that the rule was intended to penalise.

Hyper rich people are telling stories these days, the competitive aspect of sports is at risk. At the same time, the ability to gamble and generate income has gone up significantly. They are just making a product now instead of a sport. Boxing being one of the most extreme examples currently. YOY% targets are easier to hit when you can influence outcomes. When there is money of this degree at stake, people will kill/lie/cheat/steal/do literally anything for it. Lying to their television audience is not really a big ask.

Even as a Vikings fan, that shouldn’t have been a penalty. I’m not sure what the guy was supposed to do, Darnold led Addison right into him and he was just standing there.

As a Vikings fan, I’m glad a penalty call went our way… especially after the other week where the refs didn’t call face mask on QB for a safety.

Good point, James. I guess most of football is "unnecessary roughness"

They also stopped the vikings on 4th and 1 earlier in the same drive but they called offsides when no one jumped

In the year 2024, we have to question if a hit during a live play is necessary.

Horns bring out a subtle more "Fred Flintstone" look while explaining to the constable on the car ride home you're not coming home from the lodge and then say "Don't believe me, just ask Wilma".

As an actual Vikings fan, I'm happy to look the other way on this call considering how many times Darnold's facemask has been ripped off without any calls

0:36 he has a right to give himself credit cuz he made got pressure on him and even when he had hands on the ball he broke it up so he couldnt survive the ground

That ref’s name is Cletus. That’s the most interesting part of the story to me.

I'm so sick of these bs personal foul penalties for making a tackle

IT does make me wonder why they don't have penalty touchdowns like they have penalty tries in rugby for something like that.

I need to know what Kalen Deboer said to the officials when Alabama got that touchdown called back against Oklahoma

It's a hit on a defenseless receiver.

It is illegal to launch into an opponent who is in a defenseless posture, and currently the definition of a launch is when a player “leaves both feet prior to contact to spring forward and upward into his opponent.”
