One man, a Jaydee and a stack of Trace Elliots, can only be the one and only Mark King!
Noticed this video had gone from youtube and Morgan Roussel (of level42.com) kindly sent me a copy to get it back where it belongs where everyone can see it.
Notice Paul Crockford at the end handing Mark his lit cigarette, now tha'ts a manager for you!

That was the time when TRACE ELLIOT made big, beautiful stacks, with 1048 cabs and AH head with UV front lightning. I regret selling my AH250 + 2x 1048 cabs back in the days.

I was also born as a lefty. I bought my first bass right handed not knowing how to play,I started my lessons. My teacher at the time insisted i play right. I truly believe as a now professional player, that this helped in the way the brain is programmed with the right and left side.

True That... I wish he'd go back to the John Diggings Supernatural Series as the Status Bass Guitar though made to the highest quality & specs doesn't give a good enough sound, were as the JD Bass Guitars could give great bass & high mids & trebles... I went to see Level 42 2 years ago when they visit my city as they normally do & though they were absolutely amazing & a great night was had by the fans & the band, I have to say the sound on Marks Status was the worst I've ever heard... You could just about make out his bass lines but it's as if the Mixing Tech guys had put it through Sub Woofers & it was just a terrible thudding din... I'd still go & see them again in a heartbeat as I've followed them since the Early Tapes days & though I still prefer the original line up, his brother on lead guitars & Vocals along with the other musicians still pack a mighty Wall Of Sound & musicianship at the highest level...

@@greatwhite61967 I remember seeing him when he first used the King bass and it sounded pretty good but I did notice years later his bass sound became more sharp and hard sounding, I didn't like it, i agree his Jaydee and Alembic basses sounded the best

The guy standing behind the trace cabs eyes nearly pop out when mark puts his bass down on the stage. I wouldn't do that to my bass. Reminds me of the sun goes down video when he sticks the pangborn in the sand dune. Good solo and good sound this one anyway. The essential studio recording sounds like it's the jd for the fingerstyle and harmonic melodic bit and the status for the rest of the song. I thought he claimed to play all 18 mins in one take
@JBass42
@JBass42 10 жыл бұрын
Your are about right there about The Essential, I must listen to that album 2-3 times a week as its on my mp3 player :) Marks JD must have taken a fair amount of abuse over the years! There's a few pics of it on the official JDguitars website and its certainly weather worn, I'd still like to see MK bring one back on stage. That Pangborn didn't really cut the sound as well when he used it live back in 82, not much bottom end from what I remember, but sounded great on LIL - do you think he used it on Good Bye Ray...?

@DrumSolVanIsle
@DrumSolVanIsle 4 жыл бұрын
J Bass Thanks for that, and I like your work! I’ve met Billy Cobham many times, and it’s known that he is what we call ‘right dominant’, and therefore he writes with his right hand. The study of dominance is called “laterality” and it for example applies to surfing, snowboarding as well obviously to drums set and bass. The point to me is that - Mark King is left dominant YET he invented so many competent strike patterns - with his right hand/ brain-weaker side. Of course, some so called left handlers, have a “true” ambidexterity! And Gary Husband is similar to Cobham, in that he “leads left” sometimes, as a right dominant human. Unless we get Mark King in a doctors office, or interview process - we will not know (his levels of laterality) for sure. We do know he must have had total commitment to effacy, and tenacity in adversity! Hope you can check my answer, and others don’t get ‘funny’ bout it. Peace from Canada.
@JBass42
@JBass42 4 жыл бұрын
@@DrumSolVanIsle I completely get your answer, I wish I had that type of brain, my left hand I always feel is lacking whether bass playing, drumming or just generally!
@DrumSolVanIsle
@DrumSolVanIsle 4 жыл бұрын
J Bass Thanks. The key to the Mark King style of Slap Bass is rooted in his “Handedness”. He is possibly a rare 1% “cross dominant” person (and that’s more-so than the person how plays cricket “this way” but soccer “the other”) or just a very determined “left-dominant” person, as is and has been the case for centuries. Imagine though, if the first drum kit Mark King played, took home and also “bashed nine bells” out of when he was young -was set up left, set up as Phil Collins?? Would he have developed the style as we see today? Well I don’t think so, and I’ve given it years of research: it was in fact his determination, to lead with his right hand while practicing drumming (all the while writing, prob throwing with his left) that enabled him at 18 years to REALLY invent, something no one else could do. The rest was history.....
