As some one who's watched all your knitting episodes so far, and also loves to sew my own clothes, this was such a joy to watch! I love how real and candid it was, it definitely brought me back to my early sewing days... it's crazy how quickly we forget the early struggles, like spending hours threading the machine the first few times! I think you did great, and I loved the vibe of the video as well, just seeing your day unfold. Thanks for taking us along for the ride, and (late) congratulations on your first solo project. I'm off to watch Sew Day 002!

Hi, Jonathan. Is Sylvia, from Puerto Rico. It's so nice to see a young man learning to sew. I have sewn for more than fifty years, its so rewarding. I used adjustable bef risers because I had the same problem as you with my cutting table. You can get 3,5, or 8 inches more with them. It really works. Happy sewing!🥰

Jonathan I really felt your frustration. It reminded me of my first time with a new machine also. I never gave up. I was determined to get it right and I did. When I worked I made all my outfits along with gowns for other people. Sewing is my first love. Now it's knitting. I'm retired living in Florida so my outfits are tee shirts sandals and capris. No need to make clothes anymore just quilts and bags. Stay determined and persistent. You've got a great start. The quilting marine always says, "it's only fabric and thread "

Love seeing people take up sewing, and doing trousers for your first fully solo project is amazing, as someone who has sewed all their life and has a literal degree in fashion, I still turn the air blue with swearing with every project, well done! You inspired me to fix my most recent project when I get home from work (buttonhole stitching came loose)

I have just discovered your channel. Such a pleasure watching you. I am a professional seamstress. You made me remember what it was like when I started sewing at 10 years old (54 years ago). The struggle is real for sure. Keep at it. I predict an overlocker acquisition in the very near future for you. It is a game changer. The quick unpick will become your best friend for sure.

I'm so glad your trousers finally worked out! I also like that you call them trousers-My husband thinks it's funny when I say trousers or slacks lol but I learned from my Scottish Grandma. I have had a sewing machine for a couple decades and have only done very small, simple projects and hemming. I would like to do more one day! I also bought a mini surger a few years ago and still haven't taken it out of the box lol but I have dreams!

I am so amazed at your determination and success. Try using a paper clip hopefully a larger one for getting your elastic through the waistband. Before you know it you will have all of the little things you need. I’m seeing a lot of people gain interest in sewing now. When I was in high school I learned to sew, however my mother was a fabulous seamstress and did amazing things on a fairly simple 1950s singer sewing machine. I sewed my own clothes in a large part until he got out of college. Then intermittently over the years. I just bought a really fantastic expensive machine to replace the one I had in college which still worked well. I’m passing that one to my son. Both of my sons sew a little and are interested in it.

Great job sticking with it, and going on to make a whole outfit, that's awesome! I fluctuate between sewing for days at a time, and not touching my machine for months. When I come back to it, I almost always thread the machine wrong at least once, and then have the fun time of my machine letting me know I've offended it and it giving me a stern lecture lol.

Altering the pockets to be bigger is totally doable! I alter all pockets to be bigger and add pockets to most things I make. There’s a bunch of info around on how to do it, but it is basically just making the pocket pieces bigger. Try it, you won’t regret it!

It's great to see you dipping into sewing, I recently got back into sewing to complimentmy knitting wardrobe. A youtube channel that I have found extremely helpful for small basic skills that many patterns expect you to already have is Evelyn Wood. She covers everything from fabric types to needle choice for you fabric, different types of seams etc. I beleive she also offers online classes as well in garment sewing (I took a refresher course for garments from ClosetCore, and found it helped a lot, while I had plenty of sewing under my belt garments are a whole different type of sewing) Keep at it!

I empathise. I spent yesterday sewing and it took me 5.5 hours to make the Merchant & mills Saltmarsh Skirt. Quite a lot of that time was unpicking 2 buttonholes that went wrong. By the end, I was exhausted, headachy, dehydrated and done. If I was at work, I wouldn’t sit for 5.5 hours without a break but because it’s supposedly fun, I do. I know it’s more threading and bobbin changing but I change to a different thread for my overcasting ( oh, yes, actually it’s a foot change too) and that way I’ve still got the matching thread left when I come to the hem which is always last but is visible on the front of the garment. I envy your extending table: I have to crawl around on the floor to cut out so I can never sew on the same day as cutting out because I’m exhausted and in pain after kneeling and leaning over for an hour. As you say, sewing in a well set up studio is totally different than sewing at home where we’re making do.

Those turned out so nice! For all the setbacks and frustrations, you still powered through! It will only get easier! You have received many good tips already. You mentioned your needle keeps unthreading. Make sure you are leaving a good tail when you cut your thread. As the needle lifts to start a new seam, you probably need a good 4" of thread to get started. Can't wait to see what else you tackle.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I have been sewing for 6 years and I purchased a very similar 1st machine (mine was a Singer 4432 HD). It’s a great machine that will last you years! Also, I did not have an overlocker in the beginning either but I did have the overcast foot (mine has a little brush on it) which created a wonderful finished seam. One more thing - you started with not the easiest fabric - Tencel twill is lovely, but a bit slippery and can also fray. I have found that a walking foot helps with more slippery fabrics. I look forward to watching you create your handmade wardrobe!

Hi Jonathan, You have inspired me to have another look at my sewing machine! I have had it for over 20 years and initially made curtains ( not very good ones) and sewed in straight lines only. The reason being that I did not understand how it worked! The instructions are in another language and so I was, quite literally, making it up as I went along. I gave up. But now I think I might have another bash at it. Wish me luck!

Hi Jonathan, I'm quite late on watching this one ! Congratulations, you're doing great for a beginner who's all by himself. If I may offer a piece of advice, sewing mistakes are not the most important (they're actually very valuable in the learning process!) But for your's and you project's sake, when you start feeling tired, just stop. I know it's frustrating when you had high hopes and have to lower your expectations, but at some point you're not gonna be able to do anything good if you insist. That's true for ANY sewer, beginner or not. Love your pants !

You did a great job on your trousers! You should be very proud of them. I sew a lot, especially linen and cotton fabrics because of the beastly hot weather here in North Carolina and want to learn how to do a French seam. I just can’t quite get my brain around it yet. If you don’t have a sewing reference book, the 100 Acts of Sewing book by Sonja Philip, is very helpful and has great pictures and explanations. Enjoy all of your making! Dee🪡🧵

You did well? Don't forget, it's a learning process! The more you do, the easier it will become (as you get to know your machine) If you don't have an overlocker, a really nice hidden edge is a felled seam, or a French seam, both are easy to find on you tube☺️ it does sound like you chose a rather awkward material, which is fray-ey, quilting cotton's, tana lawns and linens are good starter fabrics as is wool☺️keep going! Good work Jonathan! We have all been there with our first project on our first sewing machine. You may be surprised as time goes by, that you will develop your own sewing machine "museum". That aside, a couple of tips, if you find them helpful. When I am sewing over fabrics that tend to ravel, as in your pockets, I put a strip of adding machine tape under the sewing and it stabilizes things. I have also used strips of a non fusible interfacing that I can tear away after the sewing is finished. If you haven't yet put a safety pin in your sewing kit, you should and should also consider a regular and large size paper clip as a substitute. And, since we all just keep acquiring tools, you might consider a bodkin to pull elastic through or later, if you are trying to add thinner elastic or cording to a garment, it is very useful. Congrats on your perseverance to get through this project. All our projects are building blocks for future projects.

First project I made was a cuffed shirt, looked great till I got to the sleeves and realised I had done 2 left ones! Even though I knew to be mindful of that after watching a chap on YT make a cuffed shirt I still managed to mess it up. I cut them off and put a frill where the cuff should have been. Ha ha. Looks ok though. Holiday pics look great in your “me made” outfit. xx

Love the fashion parade , and good sewing. The zig-zag stitch can be used around the raw edge trouser hems before the straight stitch on a slightly longer stitch ( saddle stitch) will stop fraying. Also keep seams flat and never cut them back too thin, they will sit flatter and softer with zigzag edge trimmed with minimun trimming. Some seams can be turned back and sewn in straight stitch, and ironed open..but I know you will find all this out as you go along. Love your videos :-)

Well done for persevering, sewing can be emotionally exhausting! My partner knows to give me a wide berth if I have a seam ripper in my hand :D! ...For your zig-zag stitch issue, because the final result looks 'wavy' it looks like an issue with the tension on your machine. Also if your fabric frays a lot I would suggest zig-zagging you pattern pieces before you start assembling the garment. It's an extra step after pattern cutting and uses more thread but well worth the trouble! x

I have my great grandmother's singer treadle sewing machine that I learned to sew on, I want to have it restored one day. I also have an electric singer from the 1940s which weigh's an absolute tonne. Congratulations on your new sewing machine, you'll have to pick a name for your machine 🙂 Well done on sewing your first solo made pair of trousers, I would love to sew my own clothes one day. If you are having trouble with your serging foot you could try a zig zag stitch but it's not as pretty but will do the job. Some thread spools suit vertical spool holders on machines and some suit horizontal, that can make a difference with your machine if you have to keep re-threading and also check that the needle you are using is suitable for your fabric thickness. The trousers look great!

Hello Jonathan I have a love hate thing going with my sewing machine this week. My serger is just just … ready to go to the repair shop. My sewing machine is continuously leaving the bobbin thread bunched up in the middle of the seam… might be taking a ride to the shop if I can’t make those adjustments myself. I was recently given a singer machine from the 1970’s It belonged to a friend who is in her 80’s. Fortunately I had that for backup. It runs like a dream. I was making Halloween treat bags for a few of my young friends. I want to have them ready for the mail . I know it’s a month off but when you’re a kid it’s fun to anticipate festivities. My machines are not new and not used as often as they could would and should be😅I might suggest you take your machine to the teacher and ask her if she would be willing to help you learn the overlock zigzag. I’m assuming you purchased it online or the shop would have worked with you on the machine. Best of luck Maybe make some napkins on inexpensive fabric to practice getting the feel of your machine. French seam would be a good solution to fraying instead of overlock

Hi! I think you did a great job. I think that type of fabric would be a little challenging to stitch, especially along the edges. Check out French seams sometime. They are nice and feel better on the skin, imho. Thank you! 🖖

Yes, it is a challenge to learn a new machine, explore it's features and make an entire project as a newbie sewer. I'd suggest that you did a fine job, that as tired as you were, it was a very successful day.. Congratulations! I'm impressed. It's lovely that you were able to construct them in spite of all the challenges. As you become more confident and experienced, you'll put together a notions kit just as you do with knitting. I like a bodkin for threading elastic or ribbons. It's 2 sort of flat pieces of metal connected at one end and with a sort of 'tooth' at the other for gripping what you're pulling and without catching it in the side seams. But I suspect that you'll sort things out and create a storage system for fabrics, notions, elastic and thread. Well done.

Hi Jonathan just a quick tip, you should iron the creases out of your pattern pieces as well before you cut out. Love your podcast

Hello Jonathan, thank you for sharing your sewing adventures! Sewing can be frustrating and it appears there's always a new mistake for us to make in every project... At the same time it feels so gratifying to wear our hand made clothes :) Did you take a look at Merchant&Mills books? They are beautiful and insightful :)

It is a golden rule of sewing that the bobbin or the thread or both WILL run out on the very last seam or bit of machine stitching you need to do. It happens to us all - somehow?

I m an expert sewer, Ive really enjoy the video. I would suggest to look at hong kong finish for fraying fabric, sometimes overlock on sewing machine has is limits.

Hi Jonathan-Just wondering if you downloaded the manual for that Singer? I own the same version and found the manual very helpful for using the different feet and managing the different features. Great job!

You did a great job, Jonathan. You are a perfect combination of patience and persistence. Unfortunately sewing has a mechanical side to it 😮. Anyone who sews has experienced it. Just look at it as part of the learning experience. Your end product looks wonderful! ( great modeling, too ❤)

Jonathan, you may want to take the sewing machine to your sewing teacher and have her show you how to work the tension dial. Also the sewing machine you have should have a overcast stitch, she can show you how it works. Don't forget Professor Pincushion on KZbin.

I think that’s a great idea! I’ve thought of doing that but it’s a heavy machine and carrying it on the tube in London won’t be the best fun 😅

@@JonathansDays You might want to check into a sewing machine handcart on wheels. Amazon should have one.

Assume, clunk = rethread your machine and bobbin. Also check to make sure the needle on your machine is compatible with your thread. You are doing wonderfully for your first independent project!

Thank you so much Devna! I think that’s the best assumption, I found out with this project too that the bobbin area likes to eat up thread and dust! 💙
