This conversation was prompted by two articles Daniel and Ken wrote on the Symbolic World blog on the topic and use of the word “egregore”. Here we discuss what this term means and how it fits into the symbolic worldview, the traditional cosmology and Christianity. We also talk about alternative terms like golem, artificial intelligence, and more generally how we can approach and categorize higher beings, angels and principalities.

Sure gives a different perspective to being of the “hive mind” or “circle jerk”. Energy is definitely transferable amongst us and to be in concentrated groups willing and thinking of things in a unified manner is powerful. If you’ve ever played sports, worked on a serious project with people, or even have protested you’ll know the feeling. There’s something magical about groups of people concentrating their will on a particular task or idea.

But that hive mind can easily devolve into an evil force. Look at the Nazis or mob violence. Crowds and mobs are frightening. You can easily lose a sense of morality or justice to the hive mentality. As Men in Black says, “a person is smart, people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals”.

"They exist to the point that they are in Christ." This is helpful. What I've found fascinating is how modern sociology has been able to start tracking the patterns of dysfunctional families. They often follow a typical mold and the individuals within the family find comparable roles to similar dysfunctional families. Yet sociology really struggles to diagnose the good. These lesser spirits follow predictable patterns, yet those in Christ are far less predictable. "The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

So what you're saying is, unhappy families are all alike, while each happy family is happy in its own way?
@MrBenbenbenbenny
@MrBenbenbenbenny 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderfreeman2480 Good question. That's sort of in line with what I'm saying but not quite. Families, communities, nations, and individuals can devolve and decay but it's often far easier to name the pattern of behavior that caused it. That's not to say they all follow the same pattern. I like Vervaeke's language. Reciprocal narrowing. They become reduced to a pattern of little complexity. For instance, someone who has experienced narcissistic parenting growing up will see particular roles be formed for them and their siblings. The scapegoat, golden child, and lost child being one of them. Therapists are often able to point out where family systems go wrong. And these people are relieved often to know others have similar stories. But in my experience there's far less consensus around what makes a functional family, community, nation, or individual. It's not just avoiding all the bad patterns. It's not something that can be easily packaged in a 12-step program or anything like that. Christ avoids those categories, and it's his unpredictability that I think has so captured the attention of so many for so long. Not that he's erratic. But he embodies these diverse attributes that we never see in one person. That's my point. If we think we have Christ figured out, we're almost always missing something or at least we should be finding it difficult to emulate him.
@MrBenbenbenbenny

@@alexanderfreeman2480 one more quick thought. I think this is why it's easier to write villains in stories than heroes. There's almost always a way of rationalizing the villains actions and we see how they got to where they were. The hero on the other hand, a true believable hero, is so much harder to depict.

Tolstoy said “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” I think what he means is that the patterns that keep families happy are the same. Though I think you're right in saying that there's a flip side to Tolstoys quote. Functional families do good things in unpredictable ways.

That we're aware of the dangers of AI, or any collectively created forces that become larger than their makers, yet do it anyways reminds me of the charioteer in Plato where the will and appetites need to be harmonized and constrained by the sacred element in us or risk extremes in many directions as the two horses enact their will and impulses without it. Great talk! Worth listening to a few times to understand how what we create can become active in the world. The reminder that these AI are made by us and trained on our thoughts, with all the virtue and vice of ourselves, is especially powerful!

When confronted with a man working to collaborate with an AI, a law enforcement agent says "You are worse than a fool, you have no care for your species. For thousands of years men have dreamed of pacts with demons. Only now are such things possible. And what would you be paid with? Therefore AI machines will be possessed by demonic spirits and use to eliminate humans. Yesterday I had a dream regarding God where He basically explained to me that just as the seed needs good earth, the demons are like the eagles that eat Prometheus' liver (his heart). In the Greek myth Prometheus is the devil tempting humanity with the fruit of Good and Evil, he gives them fire (reason), and this reason is a false reason, a reason that like the demons replaces human nature with human arbitrariness, natural will with gnomic will. Zeus "punishes" Prometheus. But in reality that's not really how we should interpret it, Zeus' actions are a narrative device for the description of "cosmic order", real hierarchy. Prometheus (foresight) already had a broken heart that eats itself, and he gives this broken heart (sin) to humanity. It's a story that abstracts out the spiritual reality of how in reality our desires are framed by our worldview, and the demons in our worldview eat our capacity to desire the good, creating these golems or parasitical processes.

@@LordJagd Of course all traditions possess some truth. Although I must add that this line of thinking can be taken too far into perennialism. Cultures are not identical. While it is important to distinguish that egregores are nourished by human beings, and exist in a kind of symbiotic, feedback-loop relationship with them, humans are nourished by souls and spirits from above, such as archangels. However, Tomberg in Meditations on the Tarot (Letter VI, The Lover), after dismissing any attempts to posit the Church or the Mystical Body of Christ as an egregore, then offers a provocative qualification to consider: “Nevertheless, although God, Christ, the Holy Virgin, the spiritual hierarchies, the saints, the Church (or the Mystical Body of Christ) are real entities, there still exists also a phantom or egregore of the Church, which is its ‘double,’ just as every man, every nation, every religion, etc., have their doubles.”
@kennethmichaelflorence
@kennethmichaelflorence 2 жыл бұрын
The notion of an evil or phantom double is an interesting one that certainly isn't without a level of validity. The notion of Anti-Christ is of course the ur-archetype for that construct. Bulgakov offers the caveat that such anti-entities can never be doubles in a strict sense: "In ecclesiastical literature one can sometimes encounter the opinion that each human has not only a guardian angel but also its own demon-tempter, and is protected in a twofold manner: on the right and on the left. This idea cannot be supported in so general a form: a guardian angel is given by God, whereas a demon draws near on the basis of the sins of a given human in conformity with its sinful weakness. The presence of a demon near each human does not have that positive ontological basis which the attendance of a guardian angel posesses. [...] The black shadow of the fall in the heavens shrouds a certain portion of the human world but without being in a position to pervert the whole of it." - Jacob's Ladder p. 49

@@kennethmichaelflorence One interesting thought I’d like to add (as a lapsed Catholic) involves the mass of the Roman church. As a child, I attended the Latin rite then still in place, and recall experiencing great mystery, of which I understood little. When the Second Council took place, the mystery evaporated in favor of hootenanny and folk masses, and a mundane rite of mere congegration. I left, but over the years, I checked in once in a while to see… that it was truly “dead” - the adults fidgeted, children got bored chewing gum… there was no resonance at all, since the mystery was pushed off-stage. When much more recently I decided to attend a Latin Rite mass, and this was a low mass during a weekday so no music or chant, just the silent, bare-boned liturgy of an ancient rite - I was blown away by the intensity of it. It was alive, unlike the Novus Ordo. And it allows me to suggest that this is what Tomberg meant by saying that the church had an egregore, which is not necessarily a negative being, but in this case a kind of psychic structure for the Novus Ordo was established by the council to overtake the Latin mass and redirect it according to its own agenda. And not only was the Novus Ordo egregore also being “fed” by all the impatience and boredom of the attendees (I can’t even call them a congregation proper), creating something that became more toxic, but the fact that the new mass was now said in all the local vernacular languages meant it would maximize the amount of geographical human turf it could integrate. As a corollary, a quick example from Rupert Sheldrake that may add some resonance to the sense of the above. He once conducted a test, using the Hebrew letters, to see how many participants, who did not know the letters or the language, would be able to discern the 4 or 5 fake letters created for the experiement. Most of them intuited these correctly when they came up. Sheldrake cited the success of high cognition by saying that the actual letters have an authentic, unmistakable spiritual resonance - one which I would consider including in the definition of “egregore.” Recall all those ancient statuary of gods which their noses smashed or heads lopped off - in order to discredit and disempower the egregore involved. Many nazi symbols were publicly burned for the same reason, to destroy legitimacy and release people from their power. In this light, today one can think of the (non-existent) virus that terrified many with computer-generated images of a dreadful-looking spike protein, in many endless garish color schemes - that was the public face of the C-19 egregore - something that lives even now as an idea, an idea we've given tremendous power to, while non-existent on the physical level.

@@PetrusSolus Interesting insights here. You're describing egregores as a kind of imposter phenomenon, which differs from the definition Daniel and I landed on in our exploration but does seem to resonate with Tomberg's construal. I'll have to go back and re-read that chapter of Meditations. The Sheldrake study is very intriguing (I take it he was probably using it as support for his morphic resonance idea). But yes, there are definitely things in this world that are spiritually authentic and those that aren't. Rudolf Steiner has an interesting exercise where he has the student meditate in the presence of a seed and consider the spiritual connection that can be made with the living seed vs a fake plastic replica.

Of course, his own Catholic conversion led him to contextualize many elements in a unique ways, in terms of their relationship to as well as within Christ. The idea of the double is something that Steiner discussed in depth, which he posited using the idea of Ahrimanic influences, and within the perspective of “spiritual science,” so it’s worth looking into for some additional interesting material. (Two related RS lecture collections are “The Electronic Doppelgänger: The Mystery of the Double in the Age of the Internet” and “Secret Brotherhoods and the Mystery of the Human Double”) In RS there is also the idea of humans unwittingly creating thoughtforms to the extent that a certain amount of energy invested in willing the thoughts creates an “elemental” that then sets up another feedback loop. If you take this setup and add in all the Covid ideas/images, which can then loop and grow, you have an occultly manifested and directed event that potentially “keeps on giving.” I was at first rather disappointed in Are Thoresen’s claim (he is a Norwegian anthroposophical veterinarian and healer) that he was infected three times by Covid, until I realized that he was most likely indicating an “infection” that occured on the spiritual level, as opposed to a physcially causative one. So while I have come to trust Drs. Andrew Kaufman, Tom Cowan and Stefan Lanka in their efforts to expose the fraud of virology as a discipline in itself, I can still allow that at least some of the negative effects of the *pandemic* occured on the occult level, producing potential results on the physical level. I will leave it here, and thanks for the exchange. I will continue to follow these stimulating Symbolic World discussions, and when I have some spare cash, I may spring for that Bulgakov book. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

We are living in the age of Frankenstein. Palingenesis by Longfellow I lay upon the headland-height, and listened To the incessant sobbing of the sea In caverns under me, And watched the waves, that tossed and fled and glistened, Until the rolling meadows of amethyst Melted away in mist. Then suddenly, as one from sleep, I started; For round about me all the sunny capes Seemed peopled with the shapes Of those whom I had known in days departed, Apparelled in the loveliness which gleams On faces seen in dreams. A moment only, and the light and glory Faded away, and the disconsolate shore Stood lonely as before; And the wild roses of the promontory Around me shuddered in the wind, and shed Their petals of pale red. There was an old belief that in the embers Of all things their primordial form exists, And cunning alchemists Could recreate the rose with all its members From its own ashes, but without the bloom, Without the lost perfume. Ah, me! what wonder-working, occult science Can from the ashes in our hearts once more The rose of youth restore? What craft of alchemy can bid defiance To time and change, and for a single hour Renew this phantom-flower? “Oh, give me back,” I cried, “the vanished splendors, The breath of morn, and the exultant strife, When the swift stream of life Bounds o’er its rocky channel, and surrenders The pond, with all its lilies for the leap Into the unknown deep!” And the sea answered, with a lamentation, Like some old prophet wailing, and it said, “Alas! thy youth is dead! It breathes no more, its heart has no pulsation, In the dark places with the dead of old It lies forever cold!” Then said I, “From its consecrated cerements I will not drag this sacred dust again, Only to give me pain; But, still remembering all the lost endearments, Go on my way, like one who looks before, And turns to weep no more.” Into what land of harvests, what plantations Bright with autumnal foliage and the glow Of sunsets burning low; Beneath what midnight skies, whose constellations Light up the spacious avenues between This world and the unseen! Amid what friendly greetings and caresses, What households, though not alien, yet not mine, What bowers of rest divine; To what temptations in lone wildernesses, What famine of the heart, what pain and loss, The bearing of what cross! I do not know; nor will I vainly question Those pages of the mystic book which hold The story still untold, But without rash conjectures or suggestion Turn its last leaves in reverence and good heed, Until “The End” I read.

The premise in the first 30 sec. of this video has such a strong bias especially because the Turin Test has been passed a million times. Plus the uncanny Vally has been passed successfully in 2D. So that statement that you’ll always be able to detect robots it’s highly likely to be incorrect.

Perversion of the sacred? How is it a perversion if it operates outside your view of “the sacred?” Who’s idea of the sacred? Conservative sacred? Liberal sacred? Indigenous sacred? Even deifying the perversion is a form of the sacred. This idea exist in Hindu Tantra. They worship everything. Everything is Brahman… including false consciousness A.I.. This is too radical for us in the west. We are too hooked into fear and looking for perpetual threats. Our fear itself, ironically brings it about. That being the case… who are really Satan’s tools?

"How much do you believe me to say: Your beliefs are sincere - on a scale of 1 to 10" Beliefs are one thing and they can deep or superficial. Faith/trust (another thing) needs goodness/truth to feed it. It gets wrecked by lies/evil. The "feeding" process is our ability to apprehend and grasp- it waxes and wanes 1 to 10.

@@experiencemystique4982 I'm not sure that I understand. You edit that please? If I was in front of God I'd KNOW that I was in front of God. Regarding: Trusting/believing (bonded but separate issues) in Him - Jesus said that the devils *believe*(and tremble in fear) in God (implication: they didn't trust God). Apostle Peter when challenged by Jesus said: I believe, help me with my unbelief/faith. It appears his meter was at 1. Therefore saved.

@@experiencemystique4982 I could be like Peter: Lord, you know all things, you know that I love you.
